  • Ooh! Tempting!

  • +1

Lol, bought it for $599 from JB just last week. No complaints though, great camera.

  • +2

which one should i get? Nikon V3 or this?? thanks :)
    My requirement:
    - good PQ/Video recording
    - easy to use (I'm newish to photography)
    - Wide choices of lens/accesories like flash etc)
    - good low night performance

    • Glad you've asked the question, same dilemma lol

    • +1

the Oly M10 would easily be better re: choice of lenses (and affordability), and overall image quality - but it would also be (slightly) bigger in size. Have a look at reviews at dpreview.com - they have a handy comparison tool at the end of the review too: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-1-v3/14

    • Just a quick reply, but the Olympus OM-D E-M10 has a larger sensor than the Nikon V3.

Of course, the sensor size alone does not determine a good camera but generally speaker the larger the sensor, the more light it can take in and the better low-light performance.

Olympus with it's M4/3 mount also has a much larger range of directly-compatible lenses.

      • Thanks @mtrkr & @johnn! :)
I had a read of the dpreviews on Nikon V3, it suggested the Sony a6000 has better EQ and it does seem the case using the PQ comparison tool…might need to wait for a deal on that…

        • Agreed, the Sony e-mount cameras all produce very, very nice images.

But another aspect to take into consideration- the size.

          In terms of physical dimensions/weight it would go Sony A6000 > Olympus OM-D E-M10 > Nikon v3.

        • +1

          @johnn:

you will need to add the lens for physical dimensions/weight.

        • @aldoduco: Of course, but just speaking of kit lenses I would still say Sony > Olympus > Nikon in terms of size.

    • The V3 would have better video and easier to use, EM10 would have better picture quality and lens selection. If I was you, I would get the EM10, much more flexible system in long run.

    • +1

Olympus wins hands down when it comes to choices of lens. There are plenty of M4/3 lenses from Olympus and Panasonic.Ranges from 40$ body cap lenses to 1500$ pro lenses. There are some sigma lenses as well.

    • olympus not that crash hot for video ..

    • As the owner of a Nikon J1, which is in a similar series to the V3, I'd choose the OM-D any day. Bigger sensor and better range of lenses. THe nightime performance will be much better - not to mention just low light.

Loved my J1, but I'm about to upgrade to an A6000 for the better low light performance.

  • Can some one explain to me the difference between

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/olympus/olympus-om-d-…

    and

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/olympus/olympus-om-d-…

Is one the silver model and one the black? i cant work it out, do they have the same included lens?? is there any notable differences?

    • +1

Second one has a different lens (EZ lens), which is much smaller.

Haven't used it myself, but some say the quality of the lens differs to the larger variant.

      • Ordered the EZ lens online. Can I come to JB Hifi and ask for an exchange?

        • Not sure if the EZ lens is worse, perhaps you can play around with the bulkier lens in store and see if it's worth trying to get a swap?

Have no idea if you can exchange, might be up to their discretion.

        • +2

The ez lens is newer and definitely the one you want. Don't try and change it for the cheaper bulkier lens :)

      • +2

I've used both the RII and EZ lenses. I can say hands down the EZ is way better than the other one. Way sharper, much more compact, auto extending and metal lens mount as opposed to plastic.

    • +1

Apart from color. The second one has EZ lens as the kit lens (new design pancake lens, more compact than the old bulky 14-42mm lense). I think based on review both perform quite similar. I would prefer to purchase the EZ lens kit version.
You can see the review for 14-42 EZ lens http://robinwong.blogspot.com.au/2016/03/battle-of-basic-kit…

    • Thanks a lot johnn and Paladin2015. I would like to get the EZ smaller lens purely for the size but its not in stock anywhere close. Does any one know of a store in perth that is still selling these and would price match, it seems Harvey/Goodguys dont stock either option currently.

  • I'm now torn between waiting for a deal on Sony A6000 or just bite the bullet on the E-M10….

    • +1

Have you held both cameras in your hands yet?

I personally think how you like the 'feel' of the camera should be a big consideration in your purchase.

I've had cameras which were excellent technically-speaking and produced great quality images but I felt were cumbersome or difficult to use, and this definitely affected my usage and overall enjoyment of them.

The Sony and Olympus are quite different sizes and designs, so I would suggest going in store if possible and having a play with them.

Even if you do miss this sale (and I know it's very much in the anti-ozbargain spirit), but I think it's worth it to spend some time figuring out exactly which one you want.

      • I agree with johnn, menus are different, touch screen, …

It's very hard to choose between the Sony and the Olympus omd em10 as I now have both again (wife lost the em10 and I recently replaced it for her). They compete well against each other, but I think the easiest thing to say is that if you are a pixel peeper, then the Sony a6000 is a better choice. If you enjoy photos generally, then the em10 or another MFT in its class will be great.

If I had to choose one camera, it'd still be the Sony mostly due to the better DR, better AF, and the convenience of charging.

Here's my thoughts on the matter.
      - Sony lenses for the budget conscious are the sigma 19mm, 30mm, 60mm, sony 50mm, samyang 12mm, 18105G, 16-50 kit lens.
      - Sony battery life is about 400-500 if you have airplane mode, and can be recharged via its simple usb port. Very handy!
      - Sony a6000 has more dynamic range than MFT.
      - a6000 has a fairly loud shutter compared to say, an omd em10
      - a6000 has very fast focus and does better in low light getting focus on compared to an omd em10
      - If I had to take the a6000 or the omd em10 to a concert, if it was a particularly loud one then it'd be the a6000. - If it was an acoustic performance, I'd take the omd em10.
      - Olympus has a second control dial up top, whereas the Sony uses the top dial, and rear back wheel. I find I am just as fast with the Sony setup if I am shooting in manual mode. Both Sony and the Olympus need you to hit a button first in order to change iso, if you have the two programmable dials set to S/S and Aperture. The sony is faster on the iso change.
      - The olympus has an incamera change so you can play with shadows and higlights prior to taking the shot.
      - The olympus also has what seems to be better jpg processing, and better jpg simulations.
Sony - I tend to just shoot neutral jpg + raw and apply LR or capture one profiles to the system. The Sony A6000 also came with Capture One v8 for the sony for free. WOW.
      - Both do wifi, but the sony also has NFC so you can do a very quick one photo share to a phone and then upload to instagram if that's your thing.
      - It is weird going back and forth between the two menu systems, they are both complex. However, after about a week or two, you get over it because you are not stupid and you learn this stuff fairly quick.
      - 12-40mm pro zoom f/2.8 on olympus is a better lens than the 1670z and 18105g with respect to corners, however that's without taking into account the higher dynamic range and longer zoom length of the Sony zooms. It's a bit of a wash though, since in many instances when you are taking actual photos, you will be happy with the result. Normal people don't look at a magnificent photo where the composition and subject matter are great, and then go, EFF ME THE CORNERS!?
      - The Olympus, despite having a noisier sensor and less dynamic range than the Sony, will still produce really great pictures.
      - If doing afternoon or night shooting, then I'd lean heavily towards the sony a6000.

      Here's the other thing—

      If Kit lens only then:

      omd em10: 510-599
      Sony a6000: 828-900
      Fuji xt10: 999

ADD a great zoom to the lens and here's your new prices in AU on the basis of cambuy, digidirect and digitalcamerawarehouse:

      OMD EM10 + 12-40mm Pro: 510~599 + $861 = $1371
      Sony a6000 + 18105G: -828~880 + $687 = $1515
      Fuji XT10 + XF18-55 bundle on digitalcamerawarehouse = $1299

Primes on all systems hover between $400-500..

edit: this is a cut/paste from another post I made elsewhere - but thought it might be useful here.

  • is this a good lightweight camera for hiking?

I normally use a DSLR but I'm going to climb mount Kinabula next month and need something light but still take good photos

    • Yeh it's a solid unit which takes good quality pics and it's nice and compact.

    • You'll be passed on the way up by the local couriers. The only way up to the hotel near the summit is by foot so all of the food, linen etc all goes up on the locals backs and heads! You'll worry less about an extra 100 grams when you see them :-) good luck on the weather front hope it goes well

  • is this the lowest price ever?

    • Nope, $30 more than the deal 2 months before https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238767

      • thanks

      • +1

if you order $500 woolies egift card from cashrewards then buy 500$ jb hifi in store at woolies then its $485 not to bad.

  • Thanks OP, got one for the wife.

  • I'm using Nikon D7000 and Nikkon 35mm 1.8G to shoot my children mostly
Will uisng OM-D E-M10 be downgrade?
Is there a fast prime lens in M4/3 world?
    Thanks.

    • +3

In ways yes, in ways no. The D7000 has a larger APS-C sensor so in all likelihood performs better in some situations. But the OM-D EM-10 performs great IMO and brings with it an excellent interface that makes the camera easy to use (yet so versatile). You also get features such as WiFi to instantly transfer your photos to your mobile phone, or use your mobile phone as a remote shutter etc.

Maybe read this review to get a better idea of what the camera is capable of, as well as all the bells & whistles it comes with,
      http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-om-d-e-m10

      As for lenses, there are several fast lenses. Three 25mm lenses @ 1.4, 1.7 and 1.8, a 45mm @ 1.8, a 75mm @ 1.8, a 20mm @ 1.7, a 15mm @ 1.7, 8mm @ 1.8, 17mm @ 1.8, 42.5mm @ 1.2 & 1.7 and more. See this link,

    • I have the Fujifilm X-E1 and I find it to be a tad slow in capturing active kids. The pros (and those that have $$ to burn) pay more for the D700, the D3 etc so that they don't miss that all important shot. I am not sure how quick the E-M10 is but if you are concern mainly with taking photos of the kids, its something to consider.

      • Not sure if this solves the problem of fast-moving kids, but using burst-mode certainly helps capture flying insects and birds :

        http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3968984

The newer Panasonic-series M4/3 cameras (G7/GX8/GH4) all have 'pre-burst 4K', which allows you to capture 30 frames at 30fps in the 1 second BEFORE you press the shutter. The resolution is lower (4K = 8.3 megapixels) than the sensor's maximum capability, but is in excess of the resolution of most monitors, and enough for A4 printing. The Panasonic's camera firmware also makes it relatively simple to 'choose' the desired photo in the 60 frames that are captured (instead of laboriously deleting the excess photos in Photoshop etc.)

I use burst-mode for flying insects, but sadly don't have ready access to my Dad's Panasonic G7.

    • If you have any faith in DXOmark measurements:

      http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Olympus-…

Although the scores are different (perhaps because they changed their scoring system between 2010 and 2014?), the actual measurement graphs
look very much the same to me for SNR, tonal range and dynamic range. Similar up to ISO800 for colour sensitivity.

As mentioned, there are a good selection of primes (some faster than others) for the M4/3 mount.

There is a strong weight advantage with M4/3. I was travelling with children yesterday, and could carry 35mm (f1.7), 15mm (manual focus) and 120mm (f2.8) primes in a small satchel (I am quoting in 35mm 'equivalent' focal lengths). In the past I have also carried a small secondary M4/3 body, so I can have two primes attached to a body at the same time. In January I donated the smaller body (and two lenses) to an NGO whose camera broke, but hope to find a replacement like a Panasonic GM5 when I go to Hong Kong soon!

Mirrorfree cameras such as M4/3 have, in my opinion, a useful advantage in having an electronic viewfinder rather than optical viewfinder.
Electronic viewfinders allow 'What you see is what the sensor sees', in terms of exposure compensation (useful in difficult lighting situations) and focus.
EVFs have evolved over the years, there is a variation in quality among the different mirrorfree camera models, and are for me a major determinant in choice of camera.

  • +1

    Tempting just for the viewfinder..

  • Can someone identify which one the HN equivalent would be?

I think it's this one but this one says MKII whilst the one posted in this deal doesn't.

    • +1

This deal is for the MK1. The HN one you linked is the newer MK2.

      • Also worth noting is that the MK1 version is still great and there's not really much difference. Also, the specific package in the link looks to be with the older lens (ie not the ez lens).

        • I have the MK1 it is so much win it's hard to fathom how they got it all in the camera body :)

    • +1

This one is with EZ lens: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/olympus-om-d-e-m10-single-len…
this one with the II R lens: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/olympus-om-d-e-m10-mirrorless…

If you manage to price match it at HN and have the AMEX offer, that's is going to be a pretty good price.

HN is really had to get price match tho.

      • That's exactly what I have in mind ;)

HN seem a bit harder but they have a price match policy. There was a time they didn't price match for me due to "being below cost price" and I wrote a complaint saying that it's not written on their policy that it has anything to do with cost price. They called me back and apologised and said they'd do it for me because I was correct.

  • damn it.. going overseas in a month so that'd make it $450.. do I pull the trigger? Aaaah bloody ozbargain!

  • Looks like the price has gone back up to $699

  • Anyone had theirs shipped yet?

    • I received mine last Wednesday after 2 attempts of Toll and they didn't leave any cards. I have to call JB Hifi to ask the tracking number also. Disappointed!

      • Thanks for the reply. It's been over a week since I bought this and I had not received any shipping notice so I contacted JB and apparently they are having trouble getting one even though it's still shown as in stock on their web site. Not impressed JB!

        • Finally got mine (a few days ago). So far seems quite impressed with it.

      • Toll is totally Shit!
