  • given Perth to philippines has a KL stopover, any chance of great philippines deals soon? Thanks :)

    • It's $392 return with this deal, I'd say that's a decent deal. Plenty of fares come up on Scoot/AirAsia from Perth if you keep an eye out.

      • ahh just saw the dates - june/july are still $550 to philly so ill hang on a bit more until it gets closer as i was thinking a euro 2016 trip there

  • What is the travel time frame? 2 weeks minimum stay?

    • its Airasia, every flight is treated as a single flight

      no actual return tickets so I'd guess no minimum stay

      • I think its 30 days or book it on the sale dates

  • Anyone manage to price match with Jetstar?

    • Jetstar only fly direct to KUL direct from Singapore… And considering it's only $15/16 on Jetstar anyway I wouldn't expect much of a saving!

  • Anyone been to KL before? How safe is it for a solo male traveller?

    • +2

      Yep. Safe as houses.

      • Wouldn't say it's that safe.

        KL for a solo male (even female) is probably just about ok, but you definitely need to be somewhat vigilant with your belongings.

        • Any sensible person is "somewhat vigilant with their belongings" anyway aren't they?

          I'd call Malaysia relatively safer than Indonesia and Thailand but Singapore still probably takes the cake for safest SE Asian country..

        • +1

          Feels safer than Melbourne, Sydney or Perth at night in the CBD.

        • @billyb67: You can "let your guard down" in places like Australia, Singapore and "get away with it". You do that over there? Not a chance.

          Example. You're at a cafe and you leave your phone on the table, which is normal and almost taken for granted here.

          Over there you probably won't get away with it.

          Another example, girls driving alone with their handbag on the passenger seat. Nothing abnormal right? Over there, there are stories/cases of the passenger side window being smashed by a motorcyclist who then speeds off with the handbag.

          Bag snatching from motorcycles is also pretty common.

          Of course I'm talking about things that aren't likely to happen, but there are cases like these over there which you just won't here about here.

          @illumination:

          I'm not sure which suburbs you frequent in Sydney but I Never let my guard down, or leave my phone on a table, I have zero hesitation in walking around KL at night but not a chance in hell I;d do that in many areas of Sydney.

          "there are cases like these over there which you just won't here about here"
          True, Just like we have ridiculous acts of violence on a daily basis around Sydney which generally doesn't happen over 'there'.

          Maybe it's just me, but I still feel safer in KL than in Sydney.

          @quaddie:

          exactly.. I have no problem wandering around KL at all hours of the night, I would never do that in Sydney these days…

        • @billyb67:

          The only place I know that is a bit of a "gangster" area is Blacktown in Sydney (I'm from Brisbane), where I nearly got into an altercation with some youths while walking back to a relatives place at 10pm. Hence, my question if KL was similar haha

        • @montorola:

          haha these days you'd probably be safer in Blacktown than the CBD at night

        • @billyb67:

          Now that I think about it, my experience might be more to do with the suburbs I frequent in KL rather than the suburbs I frequent in Sydney. I'm not your typical KL traveller (I'm rarely ever in KL CBD, always in the suburbs) and I'd imagine KL city at night is safer than walking around Sydney CBD at night, so I guess that would be an important point.

          The girl's handbag on the seat thing probably won't happen in KL city (and would be largely irrelevant for a traveler), but the snatching of handbags by guys on motorbikes wouldn't be surprising in KL city (in fact I've heard it's generally worse in the city).

          "Letting your guard down" is largely a subjective thing too. What I mean is there'd be certain things that you'd happily do here without even thinking about it, and you wouldn't consider it letting your guard down because it's just so safe here, whereas if you were to do it over there, it would almost be considered "allowing it to happen". Whether you agree or not is a separate issue.

          All in all, I guess when I think of it from a traveller's perspective, KL city is not that unsafe. However, don't use taxis. Not because of city but because many taxis refuse to use their meter.

          @montorola:
          I'm not familiar with Blacktown, but my (Malaysian) friend who lives around there described Blacktown as being "about as safe as KL" (i.e. not that safe but not super dangerous - be aware/vigilant)

    • Depends, how many dodgy massage places, smoking and gambling dens, dark alley ways and unlit forested areas will you be entering?

      • Haha no I'll be sticking to the main city streets only. However I hear the police are useless and corrupt so I don't really want to be relying on them to enforce anything.

        • +2

          Yes, there's plenty of bribery available if you encounter police. However there aren't many police related scams unlike other countries. There is definitely bag snatching and pick-pocketing but if you're careful it is not more dangerous than say Indonesia or Thailand. I would say it is more developed than those countries but I might be a bit biased seeing I was born there ;) So, more development = more safer as a general rule. You will be fine if you aren't stupid (leaving phones sticking out of pockets, carrying wallets in easily accessible areas, walking around stone drunk etc).

        • @lainey13:

          Awesome - booked!, thanks for your reply (and everyone else above!)

          I'll be staying in the Bukit Bintang area, which I hear is pretty touristy, so should be good!

        • @montorola: Hope you enjoy my birth country!! Be prepared to eat. Eat loads. And possibly get a little sick too… but oh the food! Plus, KL is actually one of the cheapest places to stay in a 5 star hotel. I like to spend a bit of money on hotels there because fancy hotels are actually fairly affordable! Nice swanning around on club floors and drinking all the free drinks ;)

  • Prices to Korea are good in this sale too. And China, particularly Beijing.
