  • Great stuff! More information on Microsoft's site.

From the site, you can either

    1. Download Office 2007 Ultimate Trial (25 launches, cannot modify/create documents)
    2. Buy Office 2007 Ultimate 1 year licence for $25
    3. Buy Office 2007 Ultimate Lifetime license for $75

As far as I can tell it only asks you for your uni email address. I am not sure whether my old alumni email address would work :) However I do know quite a few students who can benefit this.

  • If you are a bit tight on cash you can also buy Office at $25 now for 1 year, then convert it to a lifetime license before it expires for $50. It's tucked away in the terms and conditions!

  • A friend of mine works at Microsoft and they told me a bit about this offer (off the record of course): This is a pilot scheme only and it will definitely end after 90 days. They're not doing any advertising for this so apparently it's completely up to the internet community on who finds out about it.

Interesting - wonder if they're worried about losing too much money on this?

    • Office is always Microsoft's cash cow, but I don't think they intend to make any money from the EDU market anyway — it is the corporate market they are targeting, and I don't dare to check the price of full version of Office 2007 Ultimate…

Not to mention targeting university students is a good idea. They will be white collars and managers in 10 year time — exactly those who will buy full versions of MS Office.

  • I'll break it down for y'all

Microsoft aren't scared of losing money of this…

Uni students will always get illegal/illigitimate copies of this anyway as they always have (off friends, parents from work, etc..) therefore paying nothing. "I don't dare to check the price of full version of Office 2007 Ultimate…" It's $1150, and the fact that they've reduced it sooo much to $75 makes everyone SERIOUSLY consider it, as well as offering the $25 for a year then $50 to upgrade which makes even more students jump at it. I mean if it had been over $100 i'm sure i'd still go the illegal route.

They also hardly need to advertise it cos it'll be splashed all over uni's and then the word will only spread like more wildfire. Perhaps if they did proactively advertise it too then they would be more worried about losing money on this. And plus its been on heaps in Australian news (perhaps not the tv)…which is easily enough.

    • intransit — thanks for the explanation. Very good point — university students are definitely not the market MS is looking at making money from because of piracy. However as I've said, it is a good idea to get them to start using legitimate software, which they might buy the full version after they have graduated.

That's why I am always trying to get my friends to use OpenOffice.org so they can get out of this entire mess :)

  • Just saw this article on /. that ItsNotCheating was flagged as phishing site by MS's own anti-phishing tool.

LOL. I did say that guy on the web site looks a bit dodgy, didn't I? :)

  • Yep. It just worked. Thanks.
