Oh my they are expensive. Actually not good value.
    http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/Leno…

I would have to say they are starting to make Macbook Pros cheap.
(Note: not trying to start pc vs mac(I use mac) debate just merely pointing out they are expensive).

Thanks for post, I;m sure someone will buy one.

      ThinkPads aren't like most laptops.

They have really good build quality IMHO (Although SL series may not be as ruggedly built as the T and R series). Spec-wise it would be more expensive compared to Acer/ASUS/DELL/HP/etc., but once you start using it, you start to understand that those extra cost actually translates to better build materials and features. They're also Linux-friendly.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinkpad for more info.

I have used (and disassembled) both MacBook Pros and ThinkPads extensively. Love em both.
I think they're of similar class (similar price range as well) with two different build philosophy behind them.

      • very much agreed Node9

    • The Thinkpad T's are brilliant machines and well worth the extra. I picked one up this last year (T500) and i'm completely satisfied with the purchase. Best Laptop I have owned in 20 years and I have owned quite a few.

I configured up i7 T410 with all the fruit (even specced up WWAN etc) it came out to $1817 with the 30% off. This is amazing value when compared it machines of similar build quality. The only problem is I can't justify it as the T500 is going so well it's worth getting an upgraded machine and reselling the T500.

Try speccing a Dell Latitude, or high end HP Elite book then compare price please.

      • One of the best part of this offer is the 35%-off for PC's > $2500. That means you can get a pretty fully spec'ed (NVidia graphics, WWAN, upscale WiFI, 500GB disk) T410/T510 for $1670. While this is still around $300 more than an equivalent Asus, the build quality is fantastic. If, like me, you travel a lot, you soon find that Thinkpads are really rugged and reliable while still being reasonably light-wight.

My teenage daughter currently has my old T500. It has lasted longer than the last two HP's the school provided.

My only gripe is that the discount only applies to the hardware. Service contracts get $20 off - thats still $165 for two years NBD onsite with accidental damage cover.

        • Don't bother with the extra 5%, goto the epp store, the same machine that is $2,806.95 at the retail store is $2,540.16, works out to $1824 vs $1778. Still cheaper.

Whoops should have mentioned the maximum disc on epp store is 30%

I do think lenovo is a bit expensive but in no way IMO it makes Macbook pros cheap.

The cheapest 15" macbook pro is $2299
      http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macboo…

If you compare mac and lenovo with similar spec (similar hardware), lenovo is always cheaper than mac.

A great 15" T510 is only $1,803.57 after this wonderful discount.
It has better CPU, Display, Graphic card and hard drive.

    • @ Bargain Seeker

That may be true.. I agree they are expensive.. But, I suppose it's what you define as "Value".

ThinkPads are not the same as your average cheap Acer..

As per Node9's comments, ThinkPads aren't like most laptops. Build quality and support on them are excellent. I have a very very old 770ED and R40 ThinkPads sitting around somewhere. These laptop are now at least 6-10 years old and up to this day, BIOS updates are still being provided for these laptops.

So to some, this is probably considered as "good value"…

  • The deal on the EPP site is better http://www.lenovo.com/epp/

The discounts are lower, but the machines are quite a bit cheaper than the retail site, so you're still way ahead, also the theshhold to get the maximum discount is lower ($2200 vs $2500)

Save 10% with eCoupon AUEPPWEEKEND on ThinkPad SL510
Save 25% with eCoupon AUEPPWEEKEND on ThinkPad T410, T510 and X201
Save 30% with eCoupon AUEPPWEEKEND on ThinkPad T410, T510 and X201 when your configuration is $2200 or above

Eg: the T410 I used as a base was:

    AU$2,132.58 (EPP Site)
    AU$2,382.55 (Retail Site)

    • I think you need to have an IBM or Lenovo email address to qualify for the EPP discount?

I'm not exactly sure.. I assumed you would have need it. Same as for the Dell EPP Discounts.. You need to have an email address from a organisation that qualify for EPP discounts..

      • If you go to the epp site it says:

Discounted pricing on ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and other products for Lenovo employees, friends, and family.

I know because I purchased my T500 this way. No special email address or epp code needed like Dell. At the end of the day Lenovo just wants your cash and only suckers go to the Retail online store ;)

    • skysky is correct, you are supposed to provide a Lenovo or IBM employee email address or serial number to be eligible for the EPP discount

T&C are listed at the bottom of the webpage that shows the discounted Thinkpad models:
      http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auepp/StdA…

      One of them says:
"Eligibility: The following individuals are eligible for the program:
      * Regular full-time or regular part-time Lenovo and IBM employees with a valid Lenovo or IBM Serial Number
      * Regular retired, permanently disabled or on-leave-of-absence Lenovo/IBM regular employees
      * Supplemental & Co-op Employees with a valid Lenovo/IBM Serial Number
      * Family members and personal friends of the above
      * Surviving spouses of Lenovo/IBM regular employees
A Lenovo or IBM employee email address or serial number is required for all purchases under the Program."

Having said that, the last time I purchased anything thru the EPP was when I was an IBM employee, and I don't remember whether it asked me for my serial number or email address. Of course, things could have changed since then!
