Nice. I am getting the x51 delivered because I can't be bothered with building a new rig and the price was the same as building one (obviously quality would of been better if build yourself).

Also the case on the x51 looks so good.

    • +1

Price is a little higher than if you were to shop around. For 1800 you could get slightly higher specs plus peripherals and screen, though if you already have peripherals you could go higher spec again.

      • I got the x51 with i7 6700k for $1750.

        • +1

Only comes with a gtx 745? Did a build for cheaper that had a 750 ti.

        • @stainedteatowel:

Yeah but I have a spare GTX960 laying around.

Yes can be cheaper but at roughly $1950 and a nice and compact case won me over. Saves me time which I don't have a lot of these days.

I did a build with PLE to work out the price, with comparable parts and came out cheaper but the case wasn't as compact. Used the Bitfenix case and mainly gigabyte parts and Corsair Ram. Samsung SSD and WD 2TB.

        • @stainedteatowel: Can you show me the components please. Want to see. Needs to be in a Mini ITX case prefer the RVZ02.

        • @jlogic: Here is one I did up quickly..I feel like it is now missing something lol. As someone mentioned earlier if you shop around you could get cheaper parts than listed on PCCG as well.

        • @stainedteatowel: Thanks so not much cheaper than what I got configured. Better yes in some parts.

But the one I got configured at PLE makes me want to return the x51 lol because nostalgia got me in regards to building a computer. That one was $2100. Better PSU Better Vid Card Better RAM.

          Damn you lol.

Most probably end up keeping it. The worse part of the install is the software.

        • @stainedteatowel: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/gH9pZL something similar to the one configured with Alienware.

        • @jlogic: Definitely a decent build :) Honestly though if it were for gaming I'd probs ditch the 6700k for a 6600k and get a GTX 970 / R9 390. Depends on what you were planning to use it for.

        • @jlogic: Haha It is always fun building the PC. But yeah with the X51 it saved you time and it's covered by warranty at least so if it plays up they have to work on it. Although I think the warranty is voided if you upgrade the PC which is a bummer.

        • @stainedteatowel:

No, warranty is not voided when you upgrade/change PC parts. Each component has its own warranty.

Also jlogic's link above to desktop parts as though it should be comparable to the X51 with similar specs.. The laptop has about 2x less the CPU and GPU performance as they are mobile versions of those chips for less than half the TDP.

You can compare the TDP of the 6700K vs the 6700HQ here:
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_%28microarchitecture%2…

          960 vs 960m here:
          http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-960M-vs-Nvid…

        • @c0balt: That is good to hear about the warranty not being voided if you upgrade components in the Alienware desktop.

jlogic and I were discussing desktop components, as the x51 uses desktop components. We were not comparing desktop and laptop components. Or are you just questioning why he mentioned he purchased a desktop on a post about an Alienware laptop?

        • @stainedteatowel:

Whoops, didn't realise the Alienware desktop was also called an X51!

Asus also made an X51 laptop series and my mind went straight to laptop thinking, even though the Asus X51 is pretty old now.

So yeah, disregard my last comment.

        • @c0balt: haha no worries, easily done. I had to double check myself as well.

      • As long as it still has the after sales service, you will need it. Nice rigs, but all to often need some part or other replaced during the first year.

        • Yeah hopefully not. But checked the repairability on the machine. Just the mobo and cooler are custom parts.

If anything goes bust in 3years under ACL they will be covering.

  • Can someone tell me what is the difference between THunder Bolt 3, USB Type-C, USB 3.1 Type A, USB 3.1 Type B Gen 2. I am so confused…….

    3.2 kg of badass tech.

I'm tossing up between the macbook pro 2016 and the alienware. We shall see tomorrow if Apple has gotten their act together or do I have to wait another 3 months.

    • As someone who owns both it is honestly very simple.

If you're a PC gamer above all else - and you don't have access to a desktop rig- then get the Alienware

If you want the computer primarily for media or work (and/or prefer console gaming) then get the MacBook Pro

MBP is way better for media with a much better screen. It has very good built in speakers. The SSD is blazing fast. The touchpad is far superior. Battery life is night and day difference. MBP is portable; despite being a "laptop" my Alienware is strictly parked on my desk

Windows and OS X are probably equal in the sense that they both have their pros and cons

~$700 more expensive than the Inspiron with the same specs (although 965m vs 960m).

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238048

Seeing as the value of these things plummets real hard after a year, I wouldn't bother.

Look at what $1500 can get you in a 2nd hand Alienware, about double the performance of this deal.

Nowhere near as sexy, it doesn't have customisable lights, silky touch dashboard and a little alien on the front ? You know the extra $$$ is for the bling right?
Also if someone is selling thier alienware it is because it cooks eggs now.

      • +1

True, but then how many times does the laptop have to get you laid before the extra money is worth it?

Depends on if you want 1 $700 escort, or 700 $1 escorts really..

        • +2

you really should post that deal for $1 escorts.

          @nikkirose:

There's some deals that we all just hold too close to our.. chests.. to share.

  • I would hold out till the new nvidia cards are announced next month.

  • Better spec'd ROG and MSI can be had cheaper. Really worth paying a premium for Alienware name?

    • Actually no it is not worth it, I would go an MSI next time. Dell took the value out of Alienware.
