The test strips are covered by the NDSS, but the meters are not.

The test strips are the big money makers for the pharmaceutical companies, with the NDSS paying a significant amount in subsidy, ranging from ~70% - 100%, so the pharmaceutical companies will essentially give these meters away to diabetics.

Keep in mind, if you are not diabetic, you will have to pay full price for the strips! As a guide, 100 strips for a $15 machine (@ Chemist Warehouse) cost around $50! So unless you're interested in opening up the meter and seeing how it functions, yeah this isn't a bargain.

So unless you're interested in opening up the meter and seeing how it functions

For the DIY hobbyist, it's pretty simple to build one.
It's possible to build a glucometer using off the shelf electronic parts, though the parts themselves may cost more than a mass-produced glucometer. The instructions below show how to build the unit itself and the test strips as well using copper as conducting material. A drop of blood bridges the gap between the two copper strips, closes the circuit while forming a resistor.

The multimeter measures the resistance and you can then mathematically work out your blood glucose values. If you use an Arduino computer you can also create LED indicators.

Some programming required though (but code is open source)

      • Um yes they are. Or at least the meters always have a ~$40 cash back (if you have diabetes/NDSS/etc).

I feel dirty for having to upvote you.

      • You enjoyed it though, didn't you?

    Here's the GOLDEN question:

If you've bought an Accu-Chek machine in a previous promotional period, for which you have received a cash back, can you apply for another cash back again??

    Yes, that's what you call a question…

Can you buy one of these if you're just curious about your blood sugar level after say exercise or binge drinking?

    • I would like to know the same..

    • You probably won't get the refund as you are asked about details of your diabetes when filling out the cashback form. I am sure nobody checks the answer with your GP but if you want to lie about it is up to you.

I request and hope this offer is used by genuine patients only and doesn't get 'ozBargained'. This is not something meant for buying and reselling on gumtree/eBay :)

    • +1

These machines are often free so it wouldn't be worth reselling on gumtree.

    • Don't worry, it's Inkjet Printer Marketing at it's best.

  • just go on a keto diet and reverse type 2 diabeetus instead

    • +3

it does have the side effect though of affecting your spelling…

      • I spelt diabeetus correctly

Why pay and wait for the cashback when you can simply get it for free directly from the manufacturer?

  • nice post @aarick and @GregFiona, i seriously hope that these don't get ozbargained and the people who need them are able to benefit from it.

This should come free with every 10th box of a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

    • Unfortunately the accu-chek meters cannot detect glucose levels higher than 33.3mmol/l :)

  • NOTE: Test strip has an expiry date, only buy what you need.
