  • Nice found, Have u got the tripod alrdy or are u looking for one as well? Would like to see what you are getting! Thanks.

    • +2

have tripod CF055 pro4. I am looking for lighter head for travel. i also have MH057 ball head but that is very heavy ball head, 057 is 1.2KG ball head and 054 is 600 gram, my only concern is Q6 system its big and mostly used for big lens and video. ball head is build like a tank and it is Magnesium so it is heavy as compare to RRS or Arca-swiss. RRS is $700 ballhead really expensive.

  • +1

so this is just the ball head, not the tripod?

    • Yes, just the head.

  • +1

These prices are a steal. My MH055M0-Q6 cost me $450 buck here in Australia over a year ago. However, it's the best one I've ever had.

  • +1

That's good head. Might get me some o that.

    • Maybe I'm the only one who read this as "Lips & good head" lol

  • +1

So what tripod legs should I get along with this ball head?

  • +1

I wonder if they sell ball bags as well..

  • This is a crazy good deal.

  • I want this. Why do I want this? Seriously, what is its application? Please excuse my ignorance.

    • You mount it on top of a camera tripod

  • That is a pretty solid head. Good find.

  • +2

Just beware that these heads are not fully compatible with all arca-swiss type plates (according to the user reviews). I was really tempted by the price until I read that.

  • +1

I would rather choose any number of ball heads over this one. 22lbs is really not that much the way these things are rated. The bottom of the range Sirui K-10X is rated for 44lbs, and does accept ANY arca-swiss type plate. Even better is the K-20X (I have one) - Mainline Photo in NSW sells them for AU$40 more than this one as the standard price.

This is a seriously heavy ball head - 1300grams (according to Manfrotto website) - seriously??? The Sirui K-20X weighs 400 grams and is rated for 55lbs. My entire (28mm tube) CF tripod & K-20X only weighs 1900 grams.

Manfrotto used to be really good with their tripods etc, but have gone off the boil in recent years. There is much better products and value to be had. I could not even find what the ball diameter on this model was (with a few minutes on Google), which is one of the most fundamental specifications for any ball head.

    • Just wondering, what CF tripod do you use?

      • I bought a Sirui N-2204X with a Sirui K-20X ball head. Very nice combo. Not the best available, but really good value. I got lucky and paid AU$299 on eBay early last year for the tripod legs only. It arrived, and was put away (unseen by me - I gave her the details and what to look for) for a few months for wife to give me as birthday present. When I eventually opened it (long after giving eBay feedback based on my wife checking the tripod model number and condition), I found that they had shipped it with the ball head as well, so it was especially good value. They have gone up in price locally and on eBay a lot since then. The same eBay shop is selling the same combo as I have for AU$599 currently.

    • Purchased a carbon fiber from the Sirui stand about $300 at PMA few years back lasted less then 12 months. Don't get me wrong Sirui make a good tripod and maybe I just got a bad one:) Have some Manfrotto for over 30 years. Love to get this ball head but have the older style black rapid manfrotto quick release.

      • Yeah. I had an old Manfrotto 190B with pan and tilt head for over 20 years, and it was bullet proof, but a large heavy beast to move around. Much longer (the N-2204 is 4 section, not 3 and reverses on the centre column, so the ball head doesn't add any length to the folded tripod), 1kg heavier and surprisingly not as stable as the Sirui I have. Too early to tell on durability though. Bought the Sirui N-2204X more as a travel tripod - the 190B was just waaay too big to put in an international suitcase.

      Hi Andy01, I have a Manfrotto 057 head and tripod, a RRS TVC33, and a Sirui T-025X CF with C10 head.

Do not believe ANY of the specs that the tripod manufacturers put up about their heads, they are either ludicrously overstated, or hilariously understated. I have had a giant Celestron C8 Telescope on the Manfrotto 057 and it handled it fine. It is rated at 39 pounds but it feels like i could mount a car on top and it would be fine, but the tripod is VERY heavy.

I love my little CF Sirui for traveling, but it is only JUST able to hold a 5DSR and lens. It is rated at 14 pounds, but can take only about half that.

My point is, don't just go off the manufacturers numbers, read reviews and if you can have a look at them in the flesh. While i am not a manfrotto fan, i think they just are a little too truthful with their ratings compared to other manufacturers!

      • Absolutely. Not only are the manufacturers specs generally overly optimistic, but the good reviews cannot come up with a common methodology for how they even rate them. I could believe that most decent metal ball heads would support 20-30kg without breaking when completely vertical, but the real test is when the load is at an angle, and I struggle to believe that any smaller 25-40mm ball head will support a claimed 15-25kg load at an angle without slipping - probably more like 7-10kg.

I looked at the 025X (because it is really small and light), and decided against it because it is a 5 section, and the smallest tube is only 13mm. Based on past experience this would struggle with my 70D and 100-400mm L series fully extended. This is why I went with the slightly longer and heavier N-2204, which has the smallest tube at 19mm, and it seems pretty solid, even with the 100-400mm fully extended at a slight downward angle. One of the legs also converts to a monopod, which can be useful.

It is interesting that the Manfrotto website does not list the 054 ( a search for 054 on their website revealed no ball heads), only the 057 (which is listed as 1300g in weight) - perhaps discontinued ?

  • Just wanted to bring to your attention what I recently found out. B&H Photo is being sued by the US gov for discrimination (Feb 2016)

    http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/29/us/bh-photo-lawsuit/

Also In October 2007, it was announced that B&H Photo agreed to pay US$4.3 million to settle allegations that it discriminated against Hispanic workers.

In November 2009, a lawsuit against B&H Photo alleged that the store refused to hire women, in violation of New York City and New York State Human Rights Laws.

I've spent thousands of dollars with them but no matter how cheap their prices are. I decided to boycott B&H Photo due to their discrimation against it's workers.

Its a shop owned by ultra-Orthodox Jews

Religion in conflict with laws. It closes during Jewish holidays, etc.. runs along pretty strict religious lines

    • +1

I went to their giant store in NY and every single one of the many dozens of staff members I saw was male, and Jewish.

      • +1

the many female staff members i saw in their flagship store in NY were not female? or i must be blind.

        • +1

I could definitely be wrong about the gender part - this was 4 years ago that I was there - but the extremely apparent Jewish-ness sticks in my mind.

    • just tried an Amazon price match through chat, they refused

      • price is the same, you should ask them comparing it with B&H with the free Q6 plate…. B&H sell with a free plate, and mentioned how you preferred and interested to purchased from amazon instead of B&H

Thanks for the tip. Tried my luck and after about 6 knock backs I got a sales person who has processed a credit card refund of $24.88. Just be prepared to order on the spot.

Most quoted that their policy wasn't to do refunds. I figure they must have a few hundred people manning the chat line so I just copied and pasted the same question until one finally pulled through.

Wasn't immediately looking for a tripod + head despite long wanting one but my fiance reminded me I should look at one so we can set up a photo booth for the wedding using my camera. Who am I to argue with that license to shop :P. Weddings next year so that one to three month delivery isn't an issue.

Update: I did note they (Amazon) only had one of the quick release plates in stock when I made my order. The link now takes me to another seller (Norman Camera and Videos), so I'm not sure if Amazon would be willing to do a refund if the sales from another seller.

  • Would this cheap ball head with quck release be good enough for occasional monopod use with my 150-600 Sigma sports/70D? I read above ball size is important, not sure why if mostly locked on a monopod?
    http://www.gearbest.com/photography-accessories/pp_240893.ht…

    • product photo seems not reliable. i dont know how much is your 150-600 sigma cost, but it the lens cost $1k+ and i assume it is a heavy lens, and you have to attached the lens (via ring) onto your monopod, instead of the body, i will not take a risk with unknown brand.

    • +1

I would be cautious of using a cheap ball head on a heavy setup. A 150-600mm is a big lens, and unless you always keep it in a perfectly horizontal orientation, it relies on the ball not slipping to keep it steady. This is why ball diameter is important - the bigger the ball, the more surface area the ball has, so the frictional resistance is greater, and it is less likely to move/slip. There are obviously other factors that come into it as well, like the frictional locking mechanism design, the quality of manufacturing tolerances, the materials used and surface finish etc etc.

I have also read that some of the cheaper ball heads have a painted ball, and when the paint starts peeling, it obviously is not good.

This looks like a cheap knock-off of a PhotoClam or Benro ball head. If it was only going to be used for a entry level DSLR with kit lens, and fairly infrequent use, it may be OK, but for a heavier body and long heavy zoom, I would suggest a better quality head with a ball size around 40mm or larger. Also, the cheaper heads are not as smooth to use (which may be less important when mounted on a movable "support" like a monopod). I returned a PhotoClam 30NS because it was nowhere near as smooth or as solid a support as the Sirui K-20X.

      • Thanks Ghandi and Andi, its a surpurb but heavy lens at 3kg and I dont want to risk it if it could drop for some reason! The preferable larger ball diameter now makes a lot of sense. I have a good Manfrotto tripod great for video but only a generic monopod with a plasticy quick release plate which I need to dump. As my gear is going a bit over budget I was starting to economise…but certainly I dont want to have any serious regrets! Thanks again cheers.

  • Whats some good heavy duty legs to pair this with?
