  • I just realised that this could be targeted. Feel free to test it out

    • "Offer only available in the land of smeg"?

  • EDIT: argh, I was just about to get the Futu deal, but this widens my options!

    • +3

If it's the i5 128GB model that you are after, the futo deal works out a better deal when paying full price for the type cover: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237920

edit: or this type cover with CTECHIE http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-4-Type-Cove…

      • I'm kinda wondering if I could simply forgo the keyboard and train myself to use the on-screen keyboard. I mean that's the whole idea isn't it?

        • This would be almost impossible, there is a reason that tablet sales have gone backwards. People have realised that keyboards are essential to getting stuff done.

        • Surface pro 3 covers are compatible if you forgo the finger print reader and less touch pad area.

          Or get a Bluetooth keyboard.

I have a Logitech K810 keyboard which is quite nice which goes well with amx master mouse. Of course it limits you to desk duties

        • Never had a surface pro 3 but I did buy a surface pro 1 with type keyboard immediately when they came out. I used it for 3 years at uni and I can tell you that I personally found the keyboard mostly useless. The whole reason I bought a surface pro was to take notes using the stylus, which I did ever lecture. But I was never the type of person to do an assignment at uni - I preferred to work at home. As soon as I got home I'd "dock" it (usb3 hub to keyboard, mouse & usb soundcard + displayport to monitor) to do any real work. In fact, when after about 1.5 years the H key fell off my type-keyboard, I never bothered to replace it because I just wasnt using it enough.

Having said that I have a friend who has the surface pro 1 and takes notes on that keyboard religiously. Of course I've never seen him use the stylus so I wonder if the surface was the best device for him.

          Just my 2c.

        • @Avatar: Isn't the stylus good for artwork? It's made by Wacom so it's basically a built-in Wacom tablet, which I assumed would be great for artists.

        • @twocsies:
Actually it's made by Ntrig, not Wacom

        • @zzyss: First one and second one had Wacom EMR stylus, MS started using ntrig for third one (and MS bought out ntrig between 3rd one and 4th one). I currently own a SP3, Wacom stylus is the only thing that I miss from my old SP1, and I use my SP3 mainly for jotting things down using the stylus.

        • I personally wouldn't if I were you. I think the on-screen keyboard on Windows really needs improving, to an extent where when I need to type something that's not short (anything longer than 5 letters I guess), I usually look for a spot where I can use the type cover.

If you are buying a SP4 from futu, then I guess you'd have a chance to try using it without the keyboard cover.

        • @twocsies: yeah it is great for artwork but unfortunately I'm not an artist. Also I find it a hassle to switch between typing on a keyboard and using the stylus. Its a huge hassle really.

  • Can you get student price AND free keyboard?

    • Just tried it out of curiosity, code applies correctly in cart, although I didn't go through the whole purchase.

$1349 all up, beating out the current $1400 eBay deal. The difference gets bigger after cashback too.

      • Where did you find the student discount? I got no products found

        Here it is: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/edu

        • When I'm logged in as a student it just shows the prices with a 20% discount.

          http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Microsof…
Not logged in: $1499.00 including GST
          Logged in: $1349.10 including GST

Note that you must add the type cover manually to get it for free with the above code. After I added the type cover and the code (2tfjgixt7), the total discount is -AU$349.85 for subtotal of $1349.10.

        • @twocsies: How does that work? I tried getting both discounts (student and keyboard) and after signing in to buy it (cause it forces you to), the free keyboard promo doesn't work anymore.

        • @pizzaofpeace: Not sure why it didn't work for you. You will need to sign in with your student-connected account. I added a surface pro 4, and I also ticked the box for Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Type Cover (Blue). Then I clicked on "DO you have a promo code?" and copy-pasted the promo code. It reset the price for the Type Cover to AU$0.00.

Ooh, then I clicked through to the "Review and place order" and it removed the student discount. A bit late now as the offer's expiring soon, but I would click "Live Chat" to get that sorted out.

Also, after I clicked through that first time, now the price of AU$0.00 does not appear when I try the same steps again, even if I try on a different browser. :-C Sadly I didn't get a screen shot of that.

        • @pizzaofpeace:

Clear your cache/cookies and try again or use a different browser.

Just rang MS customer service, I bought a SP4 with the 15% off students and faculty deal 20 days ago.

Told them I was feeling ripped off as it hadn't even been 3 weeks since I bought one and now they are giving away free something that I paid alot of money for.

They agreed to refund the difference ($70) between my price and the current 10% student + free type cover.

I guess 40 mins on the phone wasn't totally wasted.

    • The OzB spirit is strong in you! I heard that MS customer service for Surface is awesome, for that reason I would only buy a Surface from microsoftstore.com rather than a retailer.

      • Their Surface support IS awesome: My SP3 typecover developed a fault. MS replaced it free, including courier pickup and return of a brand new replacement - all within a week. They even waited to do the return until a time that was convenient for me. Good service from big companies is rare.

  • Any idea when this expires? Waiting for the new FBT year so I can salary sacrifice it.
