  • In case anyone is interested, you can have a play around with this phone at Myer Sydney CBD as they have a demo model on display.

Photo quality looked amazing and phone felt solid.

It is however quite a chunky phone.

Deciding whether to get this or the galaxy s7.
I need something to take good low light and indoor photos without flash.

The camera on tihs will beat the S7 flat.

But the phone on the S7 will beat this flat.

      • Agree, I will only get it IF they had consistence update for android.
Also I hear people are killing the phone by just rooting it.

Another option for those who looking for good camera phone is external camera (
        Lens-style Camera.
        e.g Sony ILCE-QX1 or Olympus Air A01

I don't find that style of camera very useful, at least not as a main camera. With those cameras, if I'm on holiday or at a party or something and I suddenly see something I want to take a photo of, I'd have to take that camera out, switch it on, get my phone, unlock it and load up the app, wait for it to connect and hope there are no wifi problems, then start shooting. Definitely not for spontaneous photos. And not only does that take a while, it'll also drain my phone's battery.

With e.g. an A6000 which has an even better sensor than the QX1, I just turn it on and press the shutter button. If I want a remote viewfinder, the A6000 can sync with my phone anyway.

That said, it looks like a fun form factor for a second camera or B-roll video camera. I can imagine how it can be useful for specific scenarios, like when you know you're going to be taking lots of photos in one area. Then that could work well … although an A6000 isn't that large. :)

        • Oh that kinda defeats the purpose for me.
I wanted a consolidated phone and camera that I could fit in my pocket.

I have a DSLR but it's just too big to carry around daily.

  • Sounds like they packed a lot of phone features in this camera.

1" sensor, full manual controls, RAW, mechanical shutter on a fixed 10mm lens. What I cannot find is whether they have image stabilization or vr on it. Comes with heaps of connectivity options as it coffees with Android phone.

It would be awesome if this had some sort of filter thread to put filters and teleconverters on it though.

Also probably a little too much to ask for for a faster lens?

    • Yeah no VR or image stabilisation on this.

Don't fully understand the comparison of the aperture size f2.8 on this with the 1" sensor vs that of the s7 with a smaller sensor.

      • +2

Due to that large sensor this will destroy the S7 in low light even though the S7 has a f1.7 aperture. In good lighting conditions the S7 should hold its own quite easily.

        • -2

In low light the s7 will perform better with the fast shutter speed from the f1.7 and image stabilisation. the CM1 will be blurry in low light.

        • @Orpheus:

While it is true the f1.7 will help lower shutter speed in low light you are forgetting the poor high ISO performance of such a small sensor will have a big negative impact on shutter speed.

The f2.8 is still letting much more light in than the f1.7 on a tiny sensor.

        • @Duff5000: Not much point telling him I think, I'm sure we all remember the last time.

        • @eug: Oh, i remembered having gone through this before, didn't realise it was the same guy.

          He likes downvotes apparently.

        • -2

@Duff5000: f/1.7 still gets a higher shutter speed than f/2.8. F/2.8 is considered fast for a zoom, but slow for a fixed focal length. Most are f/2 or faster.

        • +1

          @Orpheus:

I think another good consideration is the picture quality at higher ISO settings.
With my DSLR I usually just dial up the ISO as well to prevent blur in low light conditions. The CM1 seems to handle higher ISO settings quite well.

        • @Orpheus:

You are comparing chalk and cheese. The 2 sensors are worlds apart.

yes at iso 100 f1.7 will have a faster shutter speed than iso 100 @ 2.8. No problem put the iso up on the larger sensor and you have a faster shutter speed than the f1.7

The larger sensor can use a significantly higher iso which more than compensates for the slower lens and still get a cleaner image than a cam phone tiny sensor.

Don't fully understand the comparison of the aperture size f2.8 on this with the 1" sensor vs that of the s7 with a smaller sensor.

The f number doesn't actually refer to a specific aperture size, it's actually the ratio between the focal length and the diameter of the aperture.

From what I can find, the S7's f/1.7 lens has a focal length of 4.2mm. That means the diameter of the aperture is 4.2/1.7mm = 2.47mm. The area of the aperture is pi*2.47/2 = 4.79mm^2

With the CM1's 10mm f/2.8 lens, the diameter of the aperture is 10/2.8 = 3.57mm. The area of the aperture is pi*3.57/2 = 10.01mm^2 - more than double of the S7.

If the CM1 had an f/1.7 lens, the area of the aperture would be 27.176mm^2 which is 5.67x larger than the S7 even though it has the same f number.

The larger sensor in the CM1 is also more sensitive to light thanks to its larger pixels. That's why the CM1 will easily blow away other phone cameras in low light.

        • Thanks.
          Gives me some reassurance

  • Pity this can't do 4k at 30fps.

  • If you want an android phone with a great camera, this is a great choice. The successor to the CM1 is the CM10, unfortunately it is only android camera without the phone.

    • Almost… it's the same Android camera with 4G, but no voice capabilities. Weird move, Panasonic.

  • Finally bit the bullet and bought one.

Patiently waiting for it to do all the updates.

Thanks OP for posting this deal!

Confirmed that it comes with the bonus Panasonic leather pouch packaged separately

    • are you upgrading to android 5.0 ?

      • Yeah first updated to 5.0.2 then another big 230mb update after that for some security patches.

  • Bit off topic, but for the people who bought this phone/camera, do you know how to switch off the vibration on button press for the home/back buttons? I could disable the keyboard button vibration but couldn't figure out the home/back button one.

    • Setting - Sound & notification - Other sounds - Vibrate on touch

      • Thank you!
