Sounds like a good deal to bad my area will not have NBN for about 2 more years!

    • +3

I wonder if their NBN-ready plans are counted.

THE NBN ISN’T AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA YET, BUT YOU CAN GET A HEAD START
Sign up to any of our NBN-ready plans now and we’ll help you switch over once the NBN arrives in your area.

      Mmm, probably not!

      • -1

It's just like Telstra to NOT show ("feature") its plan's Speed…

But why wouldn't the OP fill-in that missing bit of useful data?

Work for Telstra, by any chance? Maybe just a newbie happy with any speed above Dial-Up?

      • Double data deal still applies, just $20/mo off sadly doesn't - $119/mo rather than 99.

    • +1

WOW 2 years? my area is 10 years, Im not even in the 3 year plan!

  • +3

Anywhere could find info about this NBN bundle upload&download speed?

  • Today, I signed up for 400GB for $89 plan in store. I hope I'll be able to upgrade tomorrow.

  • I signed up 2 weeks ago, I will try to get them to switch me across or pay the $50 early recontracting fee.

  • What's the costs of breaking the contract?

    • Not sure for this one, but for me it was $15 * Months remaining. Actually would work out cheaper for me to break contract and switch to Internode once NBN gets connected in my area.

    • I'm here to find the same.

Family member needs broadband, decent limits, sharing with housemates… But their lease runs-out in ~6mths, not looking to renew.
Got 12GB/mth mobile broadband, and it lasts a fortnight before the fights start.

A situation I'd never find myself in… but it's family, gotta help them.

      • Family member can't get their own mobile broadband?

        • To keep rent down, they take housemates, airbnb etc.
Taking-in backpackers etc. so they expect internet.

        • @Utopian:
Taking airbnb guests and using mobile broadband as internet? I'm glad I'm not the airbnb guest or a family member lol…

        • @clse945111: EXACTLY! :D

Off to Whirlpool, searching contract-free NBN.

        • @Utopian:
Jokes aside, TPG has contract free NBN with an up front setup fee ($100), and $60 every month for unlimited data. I'm on their self-built FTTB and everything works fine running at 93mbps, I don't think NBN can be much worse.

        • @clse945111: Thanks for your input. I've hammered 10 different ISPs over the years, on many connection types. TPG are as good/bad as all the others. It's such a tin of worms, anything can happen. And often (usually?) it's the user that creates/hinders a ton of the problems. Family business uses their SHDSL $300/mth 20/20Mbit (8 wire). Absolute First Class.

It's a very good solution, for a person with limited options. And if it's turd: No contract!

          Thanks-again.

      • buy cheap ass starter kits, throw those in the router when they run out of credit

        • Interesting idea. I'd possibly toy with it for a few months. But this family member is inflexible, unwilling to try/do anything to get out of their position - Or improve their options. Pfft. Family.

  • +8

Where's the bargain? This is only the 25/5 speed tier so nothing special at all. It's $130 if you want 100/40.

    • It's normally $119 per month. Plus double data.

  • +4

…and again existing customers are treated like dirt.

    • +3

They've got you. No good reason in their eyes to give you more. :(

    • So ask them to switch. They're usually quite accomodating if u restart ur contract. If not ask for disconnections (i.e. the retensions team). Always be extra polite & friendly and you'll be amazed at what they can offer you.

      • Been through all that mate. They know that if they do it for one word will get out and they'll have to do it for all. Wouldn't budge!

        • Bummer, maybe they don't have much wiggle room on NBN plans.

        • +1

          @supabrudda:

This was a prior deal for mobile. Plenty of wiggle room if you're new. None if they think they have you against the wall.

    • +1

I re-contracted yesterday and got the plan.

  • 25/5 might as wel be in the ground.

  • +5

I will forego the discount, can I have NBN in my area now please?

  • +4

Wow all 3 new customers are in for a treat then…

  • +1

Wonder if they'll chuck in a speed pack for half price or maybe free. Can't hurt to ask some on whirlpool have had luck on other bundle deals.

    • -6

Never take a speed pack, it's purely a device to lower the amounnt of value you're getting.

Make sure you check your speed as it's common practice for Telstra to provision 33Mbit to customers that ordered 100Mbit and cry about a mistake when the customer complains.

Not that comnplaining will cause them to fix it, only the TIO can do that. Actually don't bother dealing with Telstra, just do the minimum necessary IE. make 1 complaint which should take you 30 seconds and then make a TIO complaint.

Telstra does not listen to customers and treats them as if they're brain dead (which most of them appear to be to be fair to Telstra - they happily lie back and let Big T sodomise them blatantly rip them off).

      • Not sure what you're talking about there is no 33mbit nbn ftth avc. They provision the avc (which determines your speed)from nbn Co which they pay nbn Co for. Different avcs have different wholesale costs.

You seem to have a bone to pick with Telstra.

        • +1

I think Diji1 was probably referring to the customer only getting 33mbps while on the 100mbps plan (whether it's actually Telstra's fault or not).

        • +2

@clse945111: bit of a misleading comment then - he did say provisioning 33mbit!

        • You seem to have a bone to pick with Telstra.

Not just telstra, the whole gummint.

      • I also had a bad experience getting the speed pack. Paid $20 and the connection got worse (based on connectivity tests and general usage). Cancelled it and it went back to how it was before and I'm quite happy with it.

I seem to have a 33 MBit connection too through Telstra Velocity (used in certain estates).

        • +1

The 100Mbps speed boost worked as expected for me on Telstra Cable. Download speeds are high from CDNs, but "smaller" sites are still just average.

        • @eug: Thanks. That's good to know. It's probably due to the network congestion that is already an issue in our new-ish estate. I wonder if when I got the speed boost, if it pushed me into another shared bandwidth pool that was even more congested. Telstra didn't really answer my questions regarding the issues (in fact a couple of times didn't even call back).

  • +3

Serious question, why do people still opt in for Telstra (which seems to be doing everything they can do slow Australia's progression) when other ISPs are available for NBN who offer better deals as standard? Such as TPG.

    • +5

I expect for many it's the perception, true or not, that Telstra is more reliable.

      • +4

That and support through other ISPs can be inconsistent. TPG is widely regarded or having poor support where with Telstra while it isn't always great, at least you can walk into a shop front and talk to someone.

TPG also has uncertainties around congestion in different areas. For many they work fine, for some they don't.

Also there will be people out there with family bundles or still paying for land lines through Telstra. One bill can be simpler.

When out NBN goes live within the next three months I'll probably give Skymesh a go given I find my current providers (Internode) plans a bit too expensive for 100/40 and they've turfed most or all unmetered data on new plans.

      • +2

Until their mobile network went down for 2 hours…

        • +1

A tenth of their mobile network. And only 3G

    • +1

Old people who don't understand technology trust Telstra to provide good quality service, and don't care about money so much.

      • +12

According to Whirlpool, most users on the Telstra NBN network get great speeds.

This is why people go with Telstra and spend a bit more.

        • +4

This is exactly why. Their interneational connections are typically less congested than other isps particularly tpg and it's resellers. This can be important to gamers, streamers and other heavy users. For your average user it probably doesn't matter therefore best to go with a cheap ISP. I'm considering moving to telstra.

        • +1

I recently joined Telstra NBN and have found their service and speeds so much better than Optus. I'm usually getting around 60-80 mbps during the evening and 90 mbps during the day.

        • @itschrisraymond: What Optus service were you on?

        • @itschrisraymond:

          That's awesome, thanks for sharing.

        • @eug: unlimited NBN

    • +1

TPG are garbage for anything hosted outside of australia (e.g. most of it.), that's why. Telstra relatively less so.

    • Maybe because the bandwidth available to other NBN providers is rather limited?

    • It's not just about price, have you ever deal with TPG and had a legitimate fault? TPG runs you around in circles.. its insane
From personal experience i have better speed with Telstra & reliable lines (been with iinet, Iprimus, TPG, Telstra & Optus)

Also for gaming latency > Internode, Telstra, iiNet

    • Anecdotally, it seems that most non-Telstra RSPs are CVC-constrained during peak periods.

  • +1

What's the point of the NBN if they're not giving you the full speed.

    • +1

It's a cheap way of giving those who pay more priority. I assume it's to stop congestion.

  • -5

    This is Telstra's normal pricing.

Not that such a thing exists because their sales process is an endless f*** around designed to wear customers down to taking the worst deal possible using various marketing devices: new customers can expect anything from $150 per month for 200GB to $89.95 for 1TB.

So this isn't even their best offer, which is why I negged this deal.

  • +4

Hm, might as well go with Skymesh right?

    1.2 TB / 12 TB $119.95 100/40 speed.

    Looks like a better deal.

But if you want to go with Telstra, $129 for full speed, still probably the second best option for reliability.

    • <3 SkyMesh

      • How does it compare with Internode? Thinking of going across to Skymesh, as there was congestion during school holidays on my Internode 50/20 connection.

I love having plans that have unlimited Netflix (i.e. sky mesh). My wife was home for 2 days, and we're on an old netflix free zone internode plan… 55GB in 48 hours in Netflix alone.

        • Skymesh international speeds are deplorable. First-hand experience. If you do go with them, don't bother with a 100/40 plan as you will be fortunate to reach 25Mbps, single-threaded, internationally. To your local exchange though, you'll see 100/40 speeds no problem. Unfortunately, most internet content is stored a little farther away than that.

        • @dellbon:
Yeah that's what I was worried about. I'm already seeing the 'benefits' of tpg buying iiBorg lol. Why is Telstra so damn expensive

        • @dellbon:

I recall this was an issue in 2014, is this still happening?

        • +1

          @justmiike: Yes, unfortunately.

        • @dellbon:

          :( Telstra it is then.

    • +1

Too bad they don't service all areas though.

Telstra it is for my suburb if I want a decent connection.

  • +2

Skymesh is tough to beat for a quality product.

For NBN Fixed wireless anyone aware of any particularly good deals at present?

    Thanks in advance. :-)

    • -1

I get negged for saying that????? Some folks really are either morons or don't understand even vaguely how to use the OzB voting system.

PS. Thank you for the user who +'d to even it out…..

  • +1

I wish I could get NBN. 10km from Melbourne CBD, in suburbia, and there are not even plans for NBN yet. No 4gx either

    • I'm less than 5km and I will get NBN sometime around 2018 or later.

      • Is this a compo on how close one is to Melbourne CBD?

        • +3

Nope. Just emphasizing the lack of "NATIONAL" in NBN

  • If your still using a home phone this seems a pretty good deal as all calls including to mobiles are included. We're on a Telstra 25/5 plan FTTP and have had no problems with streaming and downloading.

  • Anyone been able to find an end date for this promotion? It's not in the "Critical Information Summary."

There's a lot of areas coming on to RFS over the next few months (including my area) so it would be nice to know whether it will still be available.

    • End of this month.

      • Damn, too late for me.

        • Did you go with someone else?

        • @justmiike: Sorry, I worded it badly, but I meant that my area's RFS in May will be too late for this offer.

  • Is anyone having trouble accessing the hyperlink?
[edit - now working for me]

  • off topic: How do I know if I have ftth/fttb or fttn? It is a newly developed NBN ready area and I'm about to move in.

    • newly developed means fttn. Also, fttb is like fttn anyway, ftth > fttb/fttn.

      • Newly developed greenfield area would be FTTP. (aka FTTH)

Anyway, go look in your garage/etc. If you have a NBN box on the wall with a loop of fibre in it then you have FTTP.

        • I thought the Liberal gov changed FTTP to FTTN? In that case older new properties would have FTTP, new new properties would have FTTN. (Please correct if I'm wrong)

        • @clse945111: Brownfields changed to get FTTN, greenfield will still be FTTP, presumably depending upon scale.

  • Did some digging last night and found this https://www.mybroadband.communications.gov.au/ which tells ftth/fttb or fttn is available on your address.

  • Are there any discounts for the other Telstra plans…? 1TB is just FAR too much data for me.

    • No, but call up to see if they can customise the plan for you.

  • are people still seeing the $20 off? I'm seeing the 1TB/month, but at $119, not $99
    is it just me?
