FYI, that's an Apple TV 3 which is a four year old piece of hardware that cannot be jailbroken.

    • Coincidentally there was a software update to the AppleTV3 today if anyone has updated can you let me know if there's been any streaming video apps added? specifically hoping for SBS or Iview

Anyone who buys an ATV3 over a Nexus Player is crazy.

      • +3

Does the Nexus play media in an itunes libary?

        • +1

          Touché!

        • +3

Yeah, it's called Kodi and SMB shares.

        • +2

Not as such, but you can import your iTunes library into Google Music and then you'll be able to play it through the Nexus player. (Not sure if you need to 'all access' for that though)

          @PainToad: Good thing it's 2016 then.

        • @tp0:
          Well that's embarrassing.

Let me rephrase. Anyone who buys an ATV3 is crazy.

      • Got a link to a good deal on the Nexus Player? JB is selling it for $129

tl;dr in this thread: That thing that you like is lesser to the thing I like and you are a lesser human being for liking the thing that I don't like. The thing that I like will do the same or better in all tests you suggest, unless of course the thing I like can't actually do that thing in which case I will indicate the similar thing that my thing does and provide you with a long winded, painful process of transferring your information or process over to my things solution.

      • ATV3 - Very low specs. Almost abandoned by manufacturer (only minor updates). Third party apps not supported. Only compatible with Apple products.

Nexus TV - Morden specs. Receiving on going support (recently received 6.0). Can install any Android app, including the industry leading Kodi. Compatible with Apple, Android and Windows products.

ATV3 and Nexus TV are no where near similar.

        • -1

So what you're saying is the product you like has a larger range of features for an increase in price?

Well if we're ignoring usage requirements and price difference then the argument becomes moot, surely? What else do you have to compare if, by your own statement, the device contained in the deal is not similar to the suggestion you've made, and they're not even at or near the same price point (+52% based on OW price beat and JB's current price)?

        • +1

          @unique452:
Buying obsolete and near abandoned hardware is not a good idea, even at the "bargain" price of nearly $90. Especially since the locked down nature of Apple, means your 100% reliant on their support.

Justify it all you want, but not spending few dollars more for the Nexus is crazy Apple fanboy mentality.

        • I agree, they're not similar and they're intended for different people too. I've got an atv but I also have an iphone, couple of ipads and a couple of macbook pros. Atv does a good job for me. I'm sure if you're an android user and have a lot of money spent on the google store the nexus would be good for you. And if you like to tinker and install/side load apps then nexus would suit better since atv3 is locked down hard, but that's not why I post.

Should I buy a Nexus TV or Amazon Fire TV 4k? They're about the same price and you can install kodi on them, which is my main intention. I don't game or do much streaming (just youtube and the very rare netflix viewing).

I'm leaning towards the Amazon TV. It looks more polished, I prefer the square shape vs circle and the remote has more buttons, I think this will be better for kodi. The specs on paper look in Amazon's favour too.

Can you convince me to get the Nexus instead for kodi viewing?

        • @Obake:

Can you convince me to get the Nexus instead for kodi viewing?

Not really. I've heard good things about the Fire TV, if you're willing to import it. Also correct me if I'm wrong, but Kodi must be sideloaded on the Fire TV. Compared to the Nexus where it is officially available on the Play Store.

Another option is the new Raspberry Pi, but you won't have Netflix.

  • Anyone have experience with Hisense? That 50 inch looks like a decent deal. I dont care about the SMART TV functionality, more interested in picture and sound quality.

    • +4

As a general rule, stear away from smart TVs. The smart in them is really slow. My Sony KDL series takes upto 15 seconds to properly boot up and let me do anything with it.
Any "smartness" you need with a TV can be had with a chromecast or a pi.

      • +1

So the whole TV is operated by the 'smart' function? I thought it was just a mode you could place it in, and outside that mode it operates as per a normal TV?

        • +1

It turns on immediately, you can change volume right away, in first few seconds you can switch channel right away but if you're a bit slow then you will have to wait for a few more functionality load up which take about 10 seconds. TV guide takes about 5 seconds to load, apps another 5. If you want to access recorded contents in the attached hard drive expect to wait another 5 seconds. That's my experience with Sony one.

      • +1 to that, I hate my Sony. Always have to wait 20-30s everytime, can't change volume, can't change channel.
There is a setting called Quick Boot, but it basically has the "smart" on during the time you select which burning your Kwh.

    • I got a 42" Hisense like 7 years ago and its still going strong, cant fault it, especially with their 3 year on site replacement warranty

if anything screws up they bring a new one out, but mine has been nothing but the best

    • I have a 65" and a 50" Hisense UHD TV and the quality of the display is spectacular. The IQ of the panel is really what sold it to me but the 3 year in home warranty helped (granted, luckily, I haven't yet called on that so it might be crap but I'm happy not knowing).

Can't speak for the FHD panels but the 50" is the newer TV (maybe 4 months old) which I picked up from HNs on sale for around $750 (K321, currently $895)

As for smart functions the 65" is the older Opera based OS and it basically worthless, the 50" has built in Netflix and YouTube apps (including physical buttons on the remote) plus a bunch of other junk but I have an ATV attached to each so easily fixed.

I know there's little UHD content but the panel even looks fantastic in 1080p, UHD content will come eventually and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon (I still have my 32" 720p Samsung from who knows how many years ago)

Sound quality isn't great but I can't stand any TV speakers, I have receivers on both my Hisense TVs so can't give you much info on that

    • I have a 50" hi sense smart tv, and I will never buy another hi sense. Picture quality is poor. Whites flicker and blur. You see three cricket balls when watching the cricket. Contacted hi sense via website to see if there is a firmware update to resolve. No response.

Maybe I just got a dodgy one, but after the "no-service" response, next time I will pay a few dollars more and get a better quality tv.

Before that I had an el-cheapo 42" plasma. Much better picture (even though just standard resolution). Lasted for years. Would have bought another if it was an option.

  • How is the quality are they compare to SONY deal in Costco a few days ago? SONY is only about $100 more expensive than TCL TV

    • +3

For a difference of just $100 bucks, I'd go Sony. It'll atleast have better resale value!

A comprehensive look at the LG TV: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/uf6800

    • Great info, thanks!

  • Does the 100Hz actually make a diff when watching sport? Or is it just 50hz with marketing speak applied?

  • +1

Yes, should be mentioned it's a VERY old Apple TV.

  • Also an oled for under 3k. Not the cheapest of online shops, but cheapest bricks and mortar at the moment

  • I have been using one since they came out and have been reliable, They are easy to use and can airplay plex or ultraviolet movies and watch google play movie purchases through Youtube. If I were looking for something today and had alot of Itunes purchases (and you don't want to remove the DRM) I would either pick one of these up second hand ( around $40) or save and get a apple tv 4 or wait for a 4k version. On the Google side purchasing a Chromecast 2 might be a good option depending on content you want or wait for the next big thing which always seems to be around the corner. As for Smart Tv I have have the Smart Hub on Samsung which has been slow and buggy from day one, it useable but crashes and is unreliable.
