Western Digital.
This is a very good price. (http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=HP+Simplesave+5… )
The drive is well-received by 32 customer reviews here: http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/hp-simplesave-500gb-hard-…
Although, there is a long, unimpressed review here: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/Electronic0d6-21/detail/B002L0BN3…
DigitalStar has few scores to go by on Whirlpool (0 good, 1 bad) http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=AusPC_NSW
However, there are a number of mixed threads, including one from DEC 2009: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=2a… Their website communicates their trade policies well (shipping times, surcharges, payment types): http://www.digitalstar.com.au/AboutUs.aspxABN info: http://www.search.asic.gov.au/cgi-bin/gns030c?acn=082414453&…
General drive reliability information: http://serverfault.com/questions/7952/what-brands-of-hard-di… including this statement:
"The issue with this question is that there are good drive models for a manufacturer and bad drive models."
"For example, there seems to be a high failure rate for the Seagate 1tb & 1.5tb drives, but their 250gb & 320gb drives are solid. Yet the Western Digital 1tb, 1.5tb, & 2tb drives seem more stable, but there have been issues with their 500gb drives."Google's 2007 study has comprehensive information, and claims that the manufacturer is significant - yet, it does not name them.

Does that refer to 3.5" or 2.5"? That is not quite clear.
seeing that 2.5" are only available up to 500gb it is mostly 3.5" drive but the same may apply for the smaller versions from the respective brands.
@chansthename: only upto 500gb? This isn't 2006 anymore…
Can I connect this to a FreeBSD machine and reformat to another file system? I don't need any special "backup" feature. Just a plain, cheap, big, 2.5" drive for my music on my squeezebox server.
Thanks.
What brand hard drive do these units contain?
