Remember that the receivers are looking for the highest possible return. Don't expect any screaming bargains. 20% off laptops is a standard sale for any store.

And just who would buy a Dick Smith branded product now? These products essentially have zero warranty in 8 weeks time.

    • Hang on, what about manufacturer warranties?

      • +4

Buying a Samsung, Sony, HP, etc product is fine. I was thinking about Dick Smith branded products, especially TVs. Some generic manufacturer in China is responsible for those.

  • +1

The discounts are not enticing enough, especially when I don't have anything in mind. Might wait for another week or two.

  • Beats Studio Headphones were $280. That's a relatively good deal?

  • +1

20% off inflated RRP for products that wont have any warranty in 7 weeks time.

    This is NOT a bargain.

    • +6

Reputable Vendors will still provide warranty for their products (Apple, Sony, Asus, Hp etc). I wouldn't touch a DSE branded TV tho.

    • Warranties are valid for the manufacturer, provided you have proof of purchase. You can even go directly to the manufacturer on purchases while the reseller is still open. Your comment is moot at best.

    CALLING ALL VULTURES!

    • +2

      Absolutely. :D

I like to think of us as being more civilized, like a bunch of seagulls fighting over a chip.

  • Slightly unrelated but why did one of the moderators delete that Dick Smith PS4 deal, saying it was out of stock on posting? Luckily I had the link open on a separate tab and Dick Smith is still showing PlayStation 4 1TB for $399.20 in stock: http://www.dicksmith.com.au/sony-ps4-1tb-console-dsau-yg1079…

    • +1

      click and collect only
and looks like out of stock everywhere

      • I see. I saw 'In Stock' and was wondering why it was deleted. It seems Dick is back on to his old tricks again.

      • Mirrabooka,WA says it has stock.

    • +2

You would be nuts paying for anything from Dick without physically having it in your hands first.

  • i just called dicksmith and they said they dont sell any surface product, where do you see it?

  • +2

Sorry OP but these guys can't even get a closing down sale right! Apart from the minimal signage out the front combined with a few mangers specials inside, you would never tell that anything different is going on in the store. More urgency shown at the $2 store!

  • Should be called "Re-coup $140 million for secured creditors i.e. NAB & HSBC, Sale".

  • +4

    Guys just a heads up.

Signage is only just starting to be put up today.

"Prices will drop further on unsold stock over the next 2 months" - Carindale DSE Employee

  • +4

To be entirely fair, they still have to make a profit on the remaining stock probably in order to pay off their obligations to staff, etc. That money won't magic from thin air…

    • 30-40% off is like the profit above costs though?

      • Different products have different margins.

        • i have no idea but it always seem they had discounts every week the last year or so… the discounts mentioned dont seem very generous at all..

  • +1

Part of me hates that they are going down - badly - And the other part of me says they can stuff themselves.

Oh well - whatever mate - hope other retailers paid attention and learn from DS errors - esp. how not to treat customers!

  • Was actually about to head down to Dick Smith - but seriously if these are actually all the discounts they are giving they must be kidding themselves. They should make everything like a min 40% off ;)

  • prices look like crap.not worth it.

  • Do DSE pricematch? Cos I can get a Parrot AR Drone for $95 elsewhere. But would happily walk in and pick one up if they'll match.

  • +1

20% off is still more than what you should pay for most things. Any really good deals (if any) the staff have even more incentive to snap them up first.

  • +2

Most of the stock is still way overpriced, will be waiting for a few weeks to see if any decent deals come up

  • +1

dick smith should close down their stores and refurbish them into shelters for the homeless or food kitchens, that's the only way people will stop seeing them as a-holes.

  • +13

Ah Dick Smith, going out in typical OZbargain fashion..

A bunch of upvotes, a handful of downvotes and hardly any bargains to be seen!

  • Is it still possible to use a WISH gift card at Dick Smith?

    • +1

good question, would be a bonus to use discounted gift cards

So did some investigating by checking Store Payment Options Today
It does not list Wish Gift Cards

But back in July 2015, when it was last scanned by the web archive, it had listed Wish Gift Cards as payment
      Store Payment Options 2015

so I assume Wish Gift Card is not accepted

  • +2

Not sure why everyone is snickering at their closing down, this will screw us in the long term as JB Hi and Harvey will now have less competition wiht pricing asswipes

    • +3

      grey imports as alternatives

      • 60 inch TV grey import?

      • Grey imports? bro have you bought a grey import before?

A.) They're not compliant with AU standards
B.) You can wipe your ass with the warranty paper as that's what it's worth
C.) For phones, make sure it's compatible with the 4G and Cellular frequencies else you have shit reception
D.) Grey imports can be fakes that are masqueraded as genuine by some 3rd party re-seller in Kazkhastan

          1. Phones are (CE certified phones are legal to use here because GSM/3G/LTE are globally agreed standards)
          2. Sometimes the price difference pays for it
          3. Not hard to do
          4. Not hard to avoid if buying from reputable sellers
          5. Sometimes we grey import because some models aren't even sold here (e.g. G3 32GB, G4 Dual SIM and so on)
    • +1

DSE never provided decent competition with their dubious sales and weak price match policy.

      • -1

Agree, similar to Woolies, they're always more expensive than Coles and Aldis, but having Woolies close is not good for the general population

        • I disagree. For items I check on https://www.pricehipster.com.au/ Woolies' regular price is often cheaper than Coles' by 10%. Regularly specials are often the same.

        • @sween64:

I think frostman is deliberately trolling. Let's not feed the trolls anymore.

        • @cloudy:

How can I be trolling when I agreed with you that DSE never provided decent competition?

I meant that whilst their prices were inflated, their presence still ensured a competitive place in the Technology sales.

    • +1

Tell me how their $20 iPhone charging cables provides competition to JB? Seriously, if they were competitive, they wouldn't be going down.

  • +5

Just asked in store as to why the OPPO R7 was $599 in store and $499 on the website the dude literally just shrugged his shoulders….overpriced sale lol

    • To be fair, it has become a tradition that Dick Smith offers far better prices online than in store.

  • Here we go again. Although I have nothing to buy :)

  • +1

    No bargain left after 9am.

  • +1

Wow these prices are just shit considering. Probably still cheaper at jb and gasp hardley normals

  • +1

Dick goes down. Missus not impressed.

  • holy… I've been waiting for a 'proper' price to get a Surface Pro tablet, wish it is not gonna sold out soon

    • Dick doesn't sell Surfaces

      • oh, no… thank you for the heads-up anyway

  • +15

Remember this sale is to recoup maximum dollars for those who are owed money.

It's not a sale to beat competitors.

It's not a sale to win customers.

It's a "sale" to recoup as much money as possible. They have no incentive to give you a good bargain. They want stock sold for the highest price possible before they get kicked out of their premises, that's all.

If you want a bargain keep an eye out on the DS competitors who will now start trying to convert DS refugees.

    • -2

I disagree, it is most definitely in their best interest to make the prices cheaper than anywhere else because they need to sell most if not all of their stock in the next 8 weeks.

If the prices are to high people are not going to buy the stock and then they don't get any money.
People impulse buy alot more things when they are heavily discounted.
Im sure even if they sold their stock at 60-70% off RRP it would still be more than what greys online or similar would pay.

      • +2

I suspect they would rather offload their stock in one big batch to Grays or COTD as it would cost them less to do so.

The days of the "% off everything" firesale (think Venture and Norman Ross back in the 80's, or Brashs and Chandlers back in the 90's) are sadly over as retailers have a lot more liquidation options these days.

        • Can you please elaborate as to how it would be cheaper for them to offload their stock to greys?

        • +2

          @Pulse123:
It can be handled by the liquidator, not Dick Smith.

          No sales staff salaries.
          No retail rent.
They sell it all at once, so guaranteed to get rid of everything.

        • @KentT: The only problem with that is they have already committed to those costs for the next 8 weeks so they are already going to pay for all those things. Might as well sell as much stock as they can.

        • @Pulse123:

They would still prefer the opportunity to sell as much stock at a higher margin as they can within the shutdown period.

  • +4

Hahah absolute joke went in to the local dick headsmith saw the 20% everywhere thought okay this could be good. Enquirer bout a TV and the rep ripped down the discount and he said this is not happening then I went to buy accessories for my phone went to the desk and he wouldn't apply the discount says it's a mistake ! lol what a joke worst store ever bye bye dick smith bye bye

    • +6

He's just pissed off that he is jobless next week, which is fair enough. But certainly not right to take it out on the customer.

    • +6

He wanted the TV and accessories for himself as he goes and his them in the back

  • -2

Was after a older mac book pro but no new stock available, asked to buy the display model but was told that it was not alowwed by Apple? What a joke

    • +1

This is a general policy with Apple display models.

    • +1

How's that a joke? - it's not DSE's call whether they can/can't sell the display model

Apple have a refurb store which is where stock like this are sold off.

    • Now that it's for sure that they're closing Apple will probably be in to take that display (up to and including taking the entire fixture) them imminently.

  • +1

    I've had enough of Dick

    • +5

I'd heard that about you (;-)

    • +1

      That's what she said.

    • Back in the closet for you then?

  • +2

I actually can't wait for them to shut shop and put the final nail in their coffin.

These discounts aren't that enticing when people like JB have similar sales almost monthly.

  • +1

Don't waste time to visit the store. Almost everything are still cheaper on ebay.

  • no discount on eneloops no care

  • +1

Went to Booragoon Store at Garden City (WA). Nothing changed. No signs up or changes in pricing on shelves. Everything just looked business as usual.

    • +1

considering the farce that was the December sale, this doesn't surprise me.

    • +1

Same with the Perth city store

  • I used to absolutely love the dick. But not anymore.

    • So that was you !! (;-)

    • Too much info

    • +1

True. no one likes a limp dick.

  • will the online store be updated so we can price match to other stores?

    • I tried price matching today at JB Hifi, no luck however as they won't price match a closing down store.

      • Interesting. Thanks, I might give officeworks a go. Maybe it will work with other retailers

  • +4

    WORST. SALE. EVER.

  • +4

Receiver sale should be at least 70%. This is like the rubish deal they would spruik every 2 days

    • +2

It's not a bargain in my opinion, but you don't seem to understand the point of a receiver sale from a business standpoint.

  • +5

Actually, receivers sales usually aren't that good since they are trying to extract maximum cash out for remaining stock.

  • +1

Dick Smith management learnt nothing about customer service. Administrator knows nothing about fire sales. Give me a break!

  • I bought an OPPO F1 from the Ballarat store. The wendouree store happily called up and confirmed stock for me before I went. Paid $239.20. Nothing else really amazing that I saw.

    • But they're not allowed to hold it for you.

It's a good idea to call, but it's no guarantee.

      • They didn't hold. They just confirmed that they had stock and to make my way over there as fast as I could and hope one was still there.

        • Yeah, that was more of a public service announcement.

You can call for stock confirmation, but don't beg for dibs.

  • +1

Ringwood Victoria had nothing that wasn't cheaper elsewhere

  • No DSE. They can dishonour gift vouchers, can they dishonour warranty or dead on arrival?
