180

Hi guys,

Just saw this deal on MSY's website. It is one day Madness sale on 16/03/2010, one day only. As there is no further description, I will try to update information when I get home tonight. But cheapest price will be above $350 in the market according to my memory.

Back to my PC, did a search for the specs:

10” Lenovo S10e
Atom N270 1.6GHz
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
Wireless
Bluetooth
6-Cell Battery
Windows XP & Linux

Have to wait and see what type of model will MSY offer on Tuesday.

Cheapest price on Staticice is $388 with free shipping from Online Computer. There was a post regarding this 122 days ago.

If you like an overheating netbook, then you will love this one

your better of buying the s10-2 which was selling for 358.00

The S10 & S10e have major flaws in their design so much so they have their own little website www.s10lenovo.com where you can read all about it.

Otherwise the price is okay for a laptop designed for year 7 at high school, note the e on the s10

    • I am using the S10 and haven't had any problems so far. No heating problems either. I think the fan spinning can be pretty irritating for some, but in comparison, lots of netbooks and laptops have irritating fans anyway.

Not exactly the best netbook, but not as bad as described in the above.

  • I am not sure what the overheating problem but still voted positive as it is a good laptop.

I bought the s10-2 when it was 358 at HT and took it overseas as a gift. I went to the HT store again and apparently they will not get the s10-2 anymore.

I was reading a comparison between this one and the S10-2. I think the main difference is that the this one has square edges which apparently some IBM fans loved compared to the S10-2. it also has an express card which you don't find often in netbooks.

The S10-2 probably has the wireless 802.11n which this one does not. I am typing from memory but I am sure if you look a bit on the net you will find a comparison site.

I am tempted to buy this but I am in the market for a cheap 12-13". I don't think they exist unfortunately so I will keep watching :).

    • i owned all three s10 , s10e & now s10-2. The only good one was the s10-2 which i still own. The others i was given refunds from lenovo resellers

the battery raises the notebook so it gets more air, there was a total redesign for heatsink (read up on the coin replacement) the loss of express card was a good idea when the notebook really couldnt handle to much ie tv tuner made it cook . in addition there was an extra usb port instead of flat sqaure edge it is a bevelled thin edge and carbon pattern instead of plain

There is the website link i gave above that has the wiki with all three models compared

  • there is no overheating problem with these

if there were you would hear about with hundreds of thousands of these in the NSW school system

are they ok? probably if it comes with a HDD instead of an 8Gb SSD like the cheapo units in this price range

    • Actually you make a good point, why dont you try one instead of assuming though

here's some light reading on the problem

there is a bios update which partially solves the problem.
My S10 fan no longer spins 24/7.
But as i mentioned above, it only partially solves the problem.

You have to try to find BIOS 59 (or 58), the newest BIOS 92 will cause the fan to spin non-stop. (any BIOS 60+ can't be installed at all).

Anyways, if anyone want to control their fan speed, go to:
        http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/User-d…

        • Posted the new bios there myself :), one of them anyway

      • I have about a dozen of these in my office at work… i don't need to 'assume' anything.

        • your office has the s10e ? no offense intended but is this really a good machine for office use ?

  • Had one for about 12 months before I passed it on to a mate, no overheating issues with the one I had. Great machine for a Hackintosh, pretty much works out of the box if you know how to build one.

  • need moar details… if it's 1gb/160gb/xphome it's not a bad deal

    • CPU: Intel Atom N270
      OS: XP Home + Linux
      RAM: 1GB DDR2
      HDD: 160GB Hard Disk
Feature: 4 in 1 Multi Card Reader
      85% full size keyboard,
      Screen: 10.1” Ultra Portable
      * 1yr National Wide Warranty * WIFI 802.11g * 2x USB 2.0
      * Inbuilt 1.3MP Camera * 6 Cells Battery
      * Free $39 Farida Bag!!

  • If you do get this machine run cpuid and check the temps for a real indicator of performance , shows you realtime heat etc

  • CPUID shows clock speeds, coretemp/realtemp shows temps m8

  • MSY huh? I wonder if they have learnt about supply and demand yet…

  • never had an issue with MSY not having what they advertise in al the years ive dealt with them, normally if one stores out of one item the others have plenty. Good deal on the netbook, the lenovos are great the early models had some fan issue, but it comes with 12 months warranty if it breaks use it.

  • apparently lots of heating issues that remain unresolved with 3rd party or lenevo bios updates
was going to buy it but from 1hr of reading issues with it.. dunno now

    • wise choice

  • I picked one up today. Did a bios update and the fan issue seem to dissapear, much more sturdy the the aspire one. I cracked my sisters screen (picking it up !!) so i bought her this. Anyway, after a full day fidgiting around i finally have Win7 installed, AV etc etc. Did some tests for you guys.

Idle temps are 30-35c, seems average to me.

Under 100% load its around 50c

    http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/ROCKmyJOCKs/load.jpg

not sure how that stacks up against other netbooks, but considering my quad core desktop does 35c idle and 80c under load, doesnt seem so bad.

Must say the quality of the build trumps any other netbook I've ever picked up.

  • Gave up waiting on Dell… Cancelled my order (just took 78minutes on the phone) then headed down to Ultimo to grab one today as well.
Fan does not seem to loud to me… Its not too hot either…

    =)
