JBL 308P 8" Active Monitor Speaker (Pair) $679 Delivered (RRP $999) @ Djcity.com.au

40

Dear All,

djCity having a sale on JBL studio monitors. Cheaper than StoreDJ ($800) and Turramurra Music ("ask for deal"), which along with djCity lead prices on this type of gear. US ebay no longer cheaper due to the falling exchange rate.

I own these speakers as of 2013 and have only high praise. Threads on Gearslutz and reviews on Amazon agree. In recommending this purchase to a friend today, I'd also offer them to OzBargain.

Also available JBL 305P 5" Active Studio Monitors - $449 Delivered (Pair)

Sounds like you have no idea, period.

      • isn't "period." American speak?

        • Yep.

The perfect OzBargain comment - zero idea about value or quality, solely concerned with price.

If you're spending much less, you have not really heard you favorite song yet :)

With less snark - I would say that these are not entry level ($300), and not high end ($5000+).

Note that these are Active speakers and therefore do not require an external amp.

I think you will find Active speakers beat passive setups at the majority of realistic price points ($300-$6000).

    • It was $679 last year too !!!

WHY is this a bargain? it's their normal price

I will have to learn to use google cache. If this was the price 4 months ago, then there is no deal :(

Still the cheapest price you will find around in the past year or 2, and for another year or 2. I'll eat my words if you care to keep researching :)

    • I see that saving $1 is a hobby of both of ours.

The post is for the 308s.

    9 days left

How do you know there are 9 days left ???

    • The website states the end date. Cant do more that trust websites own stated end date.

What speakers do you own jv? :p

      • I just use my good 'Ol squeezebox

        • +1

I would respectfully request the right to demo you my speaker setup or similar- despite it being less portable.

Also - Thanks for your ongoing contribution to the site! I will search cache for my next bargain before posting.

  • How does this compare to Dali Sensor 5?

    • Not familiar with Dali Sensor, but from a brief look at them, they are passive speakers requiring an amp, among many other differences.

These are Studio Monitors, which are different to HiFi Speakers, in that the former is "better" while the latter are "more expensive" lol.

  • So perpetually marked up to be marked down?

    • Seems doubtful as there are many other examples of less competitive speakers which not marked down to best available prices… Actually I would like to see that the $680 regular pricing is indeed regular, as it is so far below RRP and below what others charge in AUS and US.

Really, no OzBargainers are Audiophiles? I'm genuinely surprised.

at this price ozbjunkie many fine speakers can be had for much less - audioengine 5's or 2's, aktimates, or simply pair some volls with a little topping amp and you walk away with $480 to spend on Elton John records.

all that aside - nice work on your first post.

        • Roger that, and thanks.

Also, I did demo the hell out of many speakers at this price point, including JBL 308, Yamahas HS8, Event 2020, and many not-notable others.

I'm unsure if I heard the audioengine 5, but from reading, JBLs go lower, and louder (without becoming distorted, obviously).

I just wish I had use for another pair of speakers!

PS my dream speakers are the Event Opals, in case anyone cares.

        • @ozbjunkie: have you demoed 305's by any chance?

        • @bashprompt: I have, and I find the sound to be crystal clear in the highs and mids and that they compare well against the Yamaha HS5 (which are another popular model at the same price point).

The reason I bought the 8" is that low frequency extension is deeper, and I listen to electronic/glitch music.

That said, these are also great for acoustic and vocal music - as are the Yamaha HS8 and HS5. However, the low end tightness and extension is what these 8" JBLs have to offer compared to the 5".

If you're in Sydney, be a bad customer and demo them at StoreDJ. Then be a good customer and ask them to price match.

      • They are a good price, but if they are always 'on sale', its a bit of dodgy marketing.

I am actually in the market for some monitors. I was eyeing off the 5" monitors due to the smaller space I work in. The 8's may be a bit too much for the space. Definitely don't want to go below a 5", lose too much low end.

The JBLs seem to be to go to monitor for the home studio.

        • Basically I advise you to go the 8" if you a) like bass and b) can afford/fit these. I use to have the 8"s in a 3x3m bedroom. It was cosy and the volume was never past 50%. I now have a bigger room, thank goodness I over-bought the speakers.

For more reading - Gearslutz and whirlpool have good threads on the 5 vs 8, and Yamaha vs JBL. Some of these threads are mine from a couple ago :)

If you have no need for frequencies 30-60Hz the decision between will be much of a muchness, and based on loudness mostly.

Basically I never see studio monitors on here and thought I had found something special. Didn't want to give free marketing when none is due.

"if they are always 'on sale'… Indeed, but I emphasise the IF.

        • I think the 8" is the way to go now. I think I can make some room :)
