How do you know if it's a bargain? What if the quality is rubbish, then it might be just an average price for no name snorkel set??

    • JV?

      • He actually has something useful to say unlike JV's "is this normal price"

  • Are the flippers suitable for body boarding? Does anyone know?

    • +3

No, these are too large and not hard enough. Just check the design of a normal body boarding one and you will see.

Aaaaaw :(, thanks so much for your answer though !!!

  • This is the normal price for goggle, snorkel & flipper sets at K-Mart. http://www.kmart.com.au/product/snorkel-set,-adult---yellow/…

There's a world of difference in quality between no brand KMart stuff and no brand Aldi stuff.

      • I'm glad you think so. We've owned both and they look as if they come from the same factory in China.

Having recently purchased a new mask, I would strongly encourage you to try on before you buy. I went to a Dive shop in Brisbane and went through about 50 masks to find one that fitted just right. Out of the 50, only 2 fitted OK, 1 really well (which is the one I got - and it was great when I used it!). The others all would have leaked under water, ruins your snorkeling experience.

The advice the dive shop guy gave me was "spend over $50 and it will be a good snorkel - just make sure you find one that fits perfectly. Go through them and check each one". They had masks from $25 to $200.

    • "spend over $50 and it will be a good snorkel"

      You mean goggles, right? :)
And yes, the goggles make or break the experience. However, cheap sets are fine for things like cruises, where they want to rent you a set for $50 and you're only in knee deep water.

Sorry, yes I meant over $50 on goggles :)

Yeah, I've been ripped off on cruises/day trips etc where they want to rent for exorbitant prices and I always take my own now - cheaper and hopefully a better experience (because of better gear).

I guess my point is I would never buy another set without trying it on - if the $25 mask does the job awesome! But if its going to leak and you have to come up every minute to empty it, not worth it in my opinion. Regardless, I'm just suggesting you try it on and make sure it fits :)

Maybe I've just got a really weird shaped face too :P

        • Oh I agree, a well-fitting set of goggles makes or breaks it. I just meant that for short stays even a cheapie will often do. We usually abandon the cheapies at the end of a trip. The local kids love em and I do have to make room in the luggage for the duty free. ;)

I think the point is the Aldi set is the best you can get without spending at least three times as much for a set.

      • I own the set and this is 100% true. Great value at this price point.

      • Bought these Aldi set early last year and used on the last cruise for snorkelling during Xmas holiday myself and kid.

        found:
        1. $25 per set with a bag. This is the best entry price for a usable good quality set for beginners.
        2. For cruise, RC has the Natiobal Geographic snorkel set for sale on the South Pacific cruise. think the mask is USD$30+ set is $50-$60+ but half price on one day only before docking to the first port.
        3. Summer is over soon and many swimming gear is on discount in Rebel last week. Can't remember if theirs on special - ?US Diver brand.
        4. If you buy now, may only use for a short while before the summer is over.
        5. There are better quality and more energy efficient flippers in market. Happy with the purchase of Aldi set. Thought I only paid $20 last year. Could be wrong. For little kid and myself, found easier to use our own googles than mask provided.

i'm going on a cruise next month and i purchased 2 sets today from Rays Outdoor price matching BCF's advertised sale. They were sold out everywhere in BCF. Must have been one of those low stock items they sell out of in a few hours to bring customers in store. (http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Mirage-Snorkelli…)
The goggles look and feel quite good, have tempered glass, so they aren't the cheap plastic stuff. hopefully i can get a lot of wear out of these.

        • @Puska: they look good. the flipper is better design.

The first rule of scuba diving is that if you refer to the fins as "flippers", you have to buy the instructor a beer.
