  • Problem child of a notebook
Freezes (Might be fixed with latest bios)

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1364180

    • +5

This is the main reason we did not sell this product after we were made aware of some glitches in December 2009, now that there is a bios fix which is downloaded off the internet, we have not had any problems and are happy to offer it to our customers.
Up until this point this is why MLN has not taken this stock and it has been available at other resellers/retailers. Once we were sure this software patch fixed all known issues we placed an order for this model.
MLN was aware of this and this is why we did not offer it until we were convinced the Bios fix is the magic patch we were waiting for, and we have waited one month to ensure that this is a patch we can all rely on.
So its a quick update, that is if you do have problems.

      • It that case. Excellent Price!

  • excellent price

  • Going by my own personal experience and that Whirlpool thread, Acer support is unpleasant to deal with.

  • best price so far

  • Yeah it's just too bad about the cashback, lots of complains about companies in general who don't honour them (and a government with a backbone like a jellyfish when it comes to enforcing the law which is how they can get away with it).

    • Acer will honour its cashback, as long as you follow the terms and conditions, though as with all cashbacks they take time to process.
You will eventually get it, if you claim on the correct dates and mail in your tax invoice/receipt.

      • If you Google there's a lot of people saying otherwise. It goes for lots of manufacturers and even software developers such as Norton.

        • +2

From the tens of thousands of Acer products we have sold over the years, I am not aware of one case that genuinely missed out or was not paid by Acer for their cashback.
If you do not follow the terms and conditions you will not be paid.
If you do follow the terms and conditions you will be paid.

        • Just send it registered.

    • +2

Acer honoured my cashback on a 13" laptop from COTD. I just had to post it on time with the required paperwork.

I think you'll find it's just the people who don't do it properly make a lot of noise, and the people who do it properly don't bother making any noise at all.

  • I got my cashback fine with Acer just after the new year.

    • same here - too bad I broke the laptop after dropping it.

  • *You have 14 days to make a claim from your purchase date
*(please allow 5-14 days for delivery)

Would it be possible to have the details emailed, otherwise the item may not even arrive in time to claim the cashback.

    • It is from your invoice date,
      example
you may pay on the 3rd, item cleared and invoiced by accounts in the 6th, its 14 days from the 6th,
you will receive the netbook 2-7 days from it being invoiced.
      Total process is 5-14 days
delivery time from invoicing is 2-7 days

So dont worry you will have plenty of time to make a claim.

      • My confirmation email has delivery at $29 instead of the $19 both quoted here and shown on the shopping cart page.

Edit: Fixed and delivery charge was $19 as quoted. Thanks

  • +2

A single charge is all it takes, and your Aspire one 751h is ready to roll all day with up to 4 hours of battery life.

    a 4 hr day sounds nice…..

    • thats for the 3 cell version, the version we are selling is a 6 cell, which will give you 8 hours battery life, this is normally a $99 option, the version we are selling comes with the 6 cell battery.

      • then you should change your blurb…..

thanks Andy, have advised the web admin, it has probably been corrected by the time I post this.
Geez we were selling ourselves short there.
          Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Hi MLN

Any better deal coming for notebooks, like the HP DV3-2105TU?

    • Our Twitter feed at www.twitter.com/mlncomau has pretty much all of our deals annouced there first, and may not make it to ozbargain for various reaons.
Some deals are also only availabe in store, and you would need to speak to a sales rep for instore deals
There are a lot of products we have on sale that dont get advertised at all anywhere.

  • +1

+1. Nice. I like the 11" screen but not the slower processor…

  • Hi MLN where(download) and how can I update the BIOS for my ACER 751. I purchased from you last year? Thanks

    • +1

http://www.acer.com.au click on service/support up the top then driver download on the left hand menu then click on netbook, Aspire one, A0751H then click the BIOS tab below and grab the one you want. Then read whatever instructions before clicking update

  • -2

So you are selling a faulty new computer? Or are installing the firmware fix beforehand? Possibly you aren't - due to warranty reasons.

So, are you packing the Bios update with the purchase, or sticking a note on the package of it's existence and a "how-to"?

Noobs lose countless hours scratching their heads when sold these type of electronics.

Is the all important and necessary bios update part of your advertisement? https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=466 doesn't show that.

Faulty Hardware is not a bargain unless it is fixed hardware. If Acer has fixed this worldwide problem, then maybe you could value add your 'bargain' with saying that. It's seems to me like a clearance sale of faulty new goods (workable - but only for those few in the know).

    • Name a vendor that doesnt do this and i will do a naked streak

    • Im sorry but I dont know how to answer this,
We never said the units are faulty, rather if it requires a bios update there is one now available, whereas in December 2009 there was not one available that fixed possible Bios problems,
all computers requires some type of an update after productions.
If you need the bios update, you download and install it.
It does not mean every computer needs it.

  • +1

yeah should be changed to $29 shippin which is what i got quoted

    • I believe it has been changed, if its different only pay the $19 for shipping as advertised.

  • Thanks. I run the BIOS update , so far no problem . will keep testing and let you guys know. By the way how do I know (check) my Acer's BIOS ver.?

  • Can anyone tell me which is the better buy. The above Acer or http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/22419 ??

  • very tempted but unsure of the GMA 500 graphics chipset's linux support……

  • I'm keen. The only sticking point is the trustworthiness of the retailer - I've read negative reports on the whirlpool site. And since I'm in Queensland any problems would be a hassle. Though I do note a competitor said all netbooks have to go direct to Acer anyway? I thought all stores had a standard 14 day DOA replacement policy?

I used the web contact from yesterday and gave my email and contact number saying just that but I haven't received a reply.

I'm ready to pay either credit card or direct deposit if given enough informationg for trust.

    • +1

I would recommend you do not buy from a dealer you do not trust.
It would not make sense to do so.

MLN sells approximately 1200 laptop computers a week, and most customers who would buy a laptop are not going to go out of their way to point out they paid and received their product. For every 5000 customers MLN has in a month we may receive a handful of complaints, though this is regretable, we unfortunately cannot stop this altogether only minimise the amount of complaints or problems we may experience. If there was a way to a 100% satisfactory hit rate, we would employ this method. In the last 6 days alone we have shipped over 900 computers alone and I think this data speaks for itself.
My recommendation to anybody that is having a problem with any retailer or reseller including MLN and wishes for a fix to their problem is to contact their point of purchase, we will always do the right thing where reasonably possible. If MLN did not fix an outright issue it would be not only illegal but just outright bad for business and if your problem was questionable or in a grey area and a suitable or reasonable resolution to your problem was not offered, I would be very very surprised.

I would also suggest in noting that the people complaining on whirlpool in particular (from just having a look now) all seem to be the same 3-4 people for the past 3 months. I am in now way agreeing or disagreeing with any of these allegations just pointing out some facts about MLN and about these posts.
I have also checked with the web admin team about your allegation of sending us an email about your request for more information about this, and my problem is that there are no emails received about any such question that you have allegedly sent in the past day let alone week or past month from anybody at all. I also have noticed that your ozbargain account is one day old. If you would like a question genuinely answered please send the online store a question.
I would suggest the reason we did not answer your quiery is for the following two possible only reasons.
      1) no email was sent to MLN
      2) no email was received by MLN.

If your notebook is issued as a DOA from Acer, then it is simply swapped for another one.

Again please do not buy from us or from any retailer or reseller, if you do not trust them or unsure about dealing with them, even if it is the company I work for which is MLN. Please communicate with your sales rep before and after making purchases directly to acheive results and answers.

      • Sorry for the late reply.

Trust is given with more information. I see that you use https:// and also other trust factors.

Whilst at the time I made some pointed questions and had only 1 or 2 days membership there was other trust factors.

I checked my history and it said it visited your site twice in that day.

So DOA means that we can exchange at our Acer's repair outlets in QLD?

  • Hi MLN how do I know (check) my Acer’s BIOS ver. After I run the BIOS update. Thanks

    • +1

I beleive you can check it by entering the systems Bios, this can be done by entering the Bios before windows boots.
I will have to check this for you, before being 100% sure tommorrow by running it by one of the tech heads in our service dept.

edit: have checked with the tech guys and if you press F2 on boot up before windows xp loads it will load the Bios.

  • Thanks MLN. My ACER 751 BIOS has been updated and show ver 3211 now. So far no problem. Will check for few weeks. Thanks for your help and good service. It was $600 back in AUG. before cashback. My daughter year 12 use for homework, watch moive, etc.. no complains if that problem fix by thia BIOS will be great.

  • Just bought one of these. Had a look at the Acer cashback site, unless im mistaken from what i can see it seems the cashback has been extended to the end of April now.

    • Yes this is correct.
Thought I do not know how long our stock will last as it is selling very quick.

  • First, I wrote about that the necessary bios update should be pointed out to purchasers.
The next day I couldn't find that blurb. So I wrote another.

The day after I noticed I had done a duplicate post, with my original now appearing.

I edited the duplicate as "duplicate post, sorry"
Now I see that both posts are gone with just a "duplicate post" under my name. hmmmmm.

So I am suspect that negatives are deleted from ozbargain. Yes, I know of the option to show negatives.

Now to a positive…… I have bought one of this little tackers. I've been playing around for hours and am very happy. Yes, I will do a Bios update at some stage.

All around, you cannot go wrong at this after cash back purchase - providing you want the laptop for web browsing, email and some non graphic intensive gaming. (And you are aware that a bios update is required)

To boot, the MLN salesperson was very professional. He took some flack (with style) from a wank customer. I tips me lid to MLN. Live long and prosper.

    • Good to hear, yeah i basically need one for uni and that's all, it's really for digital note-taking in the library as im reading, since im doing an honours degree this year i'll be reading HEAPS. So im glad you are happy with yours! Im fairly sure i will be too given i dont really do any resource-intensive tasks anyways, even on my desktop pc let alone portable uni one.

  • Oh.. im just wondering, this wouldnt really be suitable for Win7 would it? Bit underpowered? I'd assume XP would be the best but having googled best netbook os and done some reading some believe win7 without bells and whistles is a bit quicker than xp on netbooks of similar spec?

  • Hi
As I said I will post again if anything go wrong. Yes. My daughter just told me it freezes again yesterday (few times when doing MS word for homework). not many window opened at that time. My one has 2G RAM installed and the word is beta ver.

    • If you do have freezing issues, just download the Bios patch, its pretty quick and it will fix this.
It is not a hardware fault so this Bios patch with rectify this problem if you are having issues.

If its not freezing it needs no update. Not everyone will need this update.

      • "afu" is the guy who said he has already downloaded the BIOS patch, see a few posts above

        • yes, I cannot comment on his particular machine as it was not bought from MLN so I don't know about this batch, the normal process would be to obtain a DOA from ACer or to contact Acer for a repair under warranty. It will not cost you anything either way.
If you did buy this from MLN, I am not sure if we had this available in August, please contact Acer with your warranty details and if ACer are not helpful please contact your point of purchase and we will sort it out.
I think if this issue has gone on for a while the heating issue could have eventually damaged the machine physcially from continuous freezing.
If your machine does freeze it would be best to download the patch so it would not cause any actual damage to the actual hardware.
Either way "afu" you will be covered by the ACer warranty regardless of where you purchased this from.

edit: I just thought that maybe it could be the ram installed in this model, as the base model is with 1gb ram and maybe the upgraded module is causing the freezing.

We have sold close to 600 of these machines in the past 9 days, and I have not been made aware of any issues from our batch yet by any of our sales.
if you do have any issues with freezing can you please email MLN via the MLN website so the web team can actually keep a tab on what the freezing rate is, and how many of our batch actually freeze? If you are not an MLN customer unfortunately the feedback cannot really help us or our current/future customers as the batch maybe different, though hopefully we can help everyone somehow in the future if it proves to be some overall design error.

Please rememebr if you have any issues with your sale or product in anyway whatsover, please contact your point of purchase for assistance, as I can only provide general information and not specific case data.
So far I have checked with the web admin and not one of our customers have reported anything to us yet about any freezing issues.

  • Hi MLN, I am very interested in this model but still worried abouthe freezing issue. Can you please let us know the manufacture date of the batch you are selling? I am just thinking that if they are made in 2010 maybe the issue has been fixed in factory. Thanks.

  • Hi.
I just submit a help request to Acer about my netbook I mention before. Sorry my mistake. It was purchased from Netplus in AUG 2009. The Mfg date is 2009/07/06. I have pass this info to Acer. See what happen next. Thanks

    • I thought so, I was pretty sure it was not purchased from us, as we did not sell this model at that time, nor did we offer ram upgrades on this version.

      • hi MLN, could you let us know the manufacture date of your AO751? Thanks.

        • I do not know the date.
It is not going to be 2010.

As I have said, I am not aware of one of our current batch having any problems so far.
I have checked again today with the web admin and we have received not one email about any problems with this machine for approximately 670 of these units sold in the past 2 weeks.

          • @fastandthecurious: even without the bios update?

            • @Iggsy81: I and the web admin team have not heard of one case yet,
this does not mean it does not exist, but as you can see, not one of our customers have posted here either that they are having a problem or have had a problem.

If you do have a problem and require a Bios update please advise your point of purchase so we can take the appropriate action if required.
We can then also comment on how many of the units sold required a Bios update, currently the amount of these netbooks sold by MLN that have required a Bios update equals 0.
Currently the Bios update will fix this issue, if you do have an issue, I am still not aware of any issues and we are at 700 units sold and counting.

this is not a hardware fault, it is just a software patch, and only needed if it is required, I am just being precautios as we would normally be with any of our products and we are trying to be as transparent as possible.
Many products require patchs and updates, it does mean something is wrong with the computer.
Iphones, windows, and various products always have software patches that required installation and updating, it does not mean the hardware is faulty.

              • @fastandthecurious: Sounds good.

If i upgrade the RAM myself to 2GB i'd lose my warranty with MLN or?

                • @Iggsy81: yes you would, the warranty is not by MLN, its by Acer anyway, they can elect to reject your claim,
I would recommend you take the module out, place the correct original module in, then send it back to Acer.
If we do the ram upgrade we back our own installation and modules.
If we do not, we do not warrant anybody elses for obvious reasons.

Either way, after the first 7 days all warranty related issues and repairs are handled directly with Acer Australia.

                  • @fastandthecurious: Ok thanks for othat info. I haven't done anything, i purchased one from MLN couple days ago so obviously don't have it yet, am just debating whether or not it's worth getting some more RAM at this time or not. Cheers for all your help!

  • Hi
This is the update from Acer. I will try it later :

Thank you for visiting our helpdesk support.

I will be assisting your enquiry today.

    Issue / Problem Description:
The system will hang up or freeze intermittently. This issue is likely to be caused by an inconsistency in the BIOS version and audio driver.

    Solution:
Update the BIOS version (v3211 or later), and Audio device driver (v5.10.0.6024 or newer) from the Global Acer Driver & Download page.

I strongly suggest you to run an eRecovery after updating the BIOS. Once system has been restored to factory settings, you will need to update the audio

driver version and check if the problem still persists. Performing a system recovery will eliminate any other potential software problems which could

    contribute to the freezing symptom.

    Instructions:
    1. Visit the Acer Support website, click on the "BIOS" tab and download the latest BIOS version. ( www.acer.com.au under Service & Support tab under Drivers

    & Downloads ).

You should be able to flash the BIOS from Windows using the files supplied in the downloaded zip folder.

Warning: Acer is not liable for any failed BIOS updates where customer has not followed the instructions accurately. Ensure your unit has the power adapter

connected before proceeding with the BIOS flash.

    1. After successfully updating the BIOS, you will required to download the latest audio device driver from the same website.

    2. Click on the "Driver" tab and you'll see the "Audio Driver" by Realtek. Download this file to your computer.

    3. You will need to uninstall the currently installed version of the Audio device driver before installing this new version.
To uninstall this you will need to click on: Start -> Control Panel -> Progams (Uninstall) -> select (Realtek) Audio Driver and click on Uninstall.

    4. Install the new version and reboot the machine.

    Has this resolve your issue?

Thank you and have a great day.

    Best Regards,

    Technical Support Department
    Acer Computers Australia

  • UPDATE for MLN customers
So far we still have had 0 reports of any freezing of our Acer 751's that MLN is selling, total units sold are over 1000.

    • Yes i received mine from you guys yesterday. Spent a couple hours removing all the unnecessary software off it that Acer puts on and it seems pretty good now, im happy with it no problems yet (i didnt do any BIOS update) but i'll obviously let you know if theres any probs but sounds like there wont be!

      • I have checked with Acer on how many they actually have as reported with the software patch required and the offical answer was 1.1%
so for every thousand maybe 11 units will need the software patch which is not a hardware fault.
I beleive people are concerned that the unit is actually faulty, a Bios update is not a fault.
Again this is what Acer Australia is reporting to me based on what information they have on their systems.
So far still not one of our customers has reported anything to us.
Please rememeber to advise your point of purchase if you do have an issue.

        • Update
We have had one netbook reported to us with this freezing problem that has been rectified.

    • do u think u'll have stocks until the 1st of april? :( (no $ until then)

      • maybe, I cannot comment, it really depends on how sales go, we do have several thousand ordered.
Since the cashback has been extended we most likely will.
If you check the website, it will display availablilty.

        • Thanks, good to know its still in stock!
If you don't mind, can you tell us how the freezing problem was rectufied for the one that had the problem?

          • @[Deactivated]: I am pretty sure it was by downloading and installing the patch, I don't know actually.
to be honust guys, out of the 1000+ sold only one has been reported to have had some fault. It would be safe to say your not going to have any more or less chance of having a problem with this netbook then you would with anything else out there.

The important thing to remember with the internet and forums are that, if someone has bought a computer and has had no problems and everything runs just fine, they are not going to go out of their way to say this laptop works fine, as there is actually nothing to report on, so you only ever hear about the negative aspects, hence the saying no news is good news.
You only need one bad experience to stain the other 1000 good experiences, but this is just my own opinion.

  • Hey MLN,

    Good Afternoon Andy,

Thank you for visiting our helpdesk support.

I will be assisting your enquiry today.

    Issue / Problem Description:
The system will hang up or freeze intermittently. This issue is likely to be caused by an inconsistency in the BIOS version and audio driver.

    Solution:
Update the BIOS version (v3211 or later), and Audio device driver (v5.10.0.6024 or newer) from the Global Acer Driver & Download page.

I strongly suggest you to run an eRecovery after updating the BIOS. Once system has been restored to factory settings, you will need to update the audio driver version and check if the problem still persists. Performing a system recovery will eliminate any other potential software problems which could contribute to the freezing symptom.

    Instructions:
    1. Visit the Acer Support website, click on the "BIOS" tab and download the latest BIOS version. ( www.acer.com.au under Service & Support tab under Drivers & Downloads ).

You should be able to flash the BIOS from Windows using the files supplied in the downloaded zip folder.

Warning: Acer is not liable for any failed BIOS updates where customer has not followed the instructions accurately. Ensure your unit has the power adapter connected before proceeding with the BIOS flash.

  • I am thinking of buying. BUT…
Friend of mine said, this is a very slow machine, even open a web page is taking long time. it easily to get CPU 100% utilization if open few web links. Can someone comment on that to help me make decision. Thanks !

    • +1

this is actually a very efficient processor, thats why you can get 8 hours battery life on a 11" screen,
the performance of it is very much the same as any of the other Atom processors. With some situations its even better. The truth is at this price point all of the Atom processors are very much the same unless you go for the new dual core Atom processors. You will not notice any difference in performance or usage, the ebst way to speeden these machines up, is to uninstall some of the preinstalled software.

      • Yep agree.

Its not very slow, its precisely what you would expect from this type of machine. Obviously you arent going to be using a netbook to encode 1080p mkv's or something like that, but ive been able to watch family guy and listen to music and have office open all at the same time without any stutter. Its not grease lightning but for what it is intended its ideal really, ive had mine a few weeks now and very happy with it, i love the cute lil fella! :)

Oh and spot on what MLN said above about removing software, maybe your friend who said its v slow is no good at optimisation himself. It goes without saying on machines like this you cant afford bloatware, so if you're a n00bcannon you might want to get someone more technically minded to remove the trash u dont need, which is basically every application on there, antivirus included - which is always nothing more than a waste of resource anyway. If you do this - as i have done - you'll find it runs very acceptably.

  • I am also getting Acer eM250 Netbook soon. In term of performance (multiple tasks / how fast launch program)for both netbook, which one is better ? If AO751 is slight better than eM250, I do not mind paying $100 more for AO751. I would really appreciate if someone could comment on this. Thanks in advance !

  • Cool netbook. I bought one for my wife. Strangely, it comes pre installed with a fair amount of bloatware. Running at full speed now. Nice one, MLN.

  • I'm thinking about buying 1 of these babies… is it worth upgrading the RAM to 2GB? If so, what would it cost MLN?

  • I have some queries about this product and the Lenovo S10E.I emailed MLN a few days ago with 2 queries re each product but no answer. I'd like to know how much to upgrade their memory (1 to 2 G),Ram(increasing to 250G) & the cost of going to Windows 7.Also,do they have Wireless N?Is the cash back deal available to the black model? Pls MLN,ps reply to my queries.Look for a Lisette from Queensland in your Inbox. Thanks.

    • Hey Clementine - the offer is well and truly over.
I bought the 1 gig Acer. After waiting 2 months to get the cash back, it was not a bad Netbook.
It's flaw, which I should have known about, is that the graphics is limited to 8 megs and unchangeable in the BIOS.

The machine is a screamer, unless you want to play year 2000 Rome Total War. RTW isn't a graphics hog and I never thought a netbook of the modern age not being able to play it.

I sold the netbook off to a facebook Queen and she is very happy. It is a great laptop for everything except for anything above a card came.

I bought a refurbished Dell full blown laptop and couldn't be happier. The laptop is only for when I am not at home and need to kill some time - thus my need for Rome Total War

  • Thanks,Hello Newman. Do you know if MLN could provide extra ram/memory for this machine?(Say update it to 2G/250G?)Or where I could go to buy the relevent ram modules for a good price?I know you said it's not great for gaming, but could you play Portal on it?(the sequel is coming out in December) I'm a VERY occasional gamer,so the option to play a few mid-res games on an ultraportable would be cool.Anybody recommend a good netbook for this? I'd love a machine with a 11"+ screen and excellent connectivity. Thanks again to Newman and everyone on this board.
Kinda disappointed that MLN hasn't answered ANY of my direct emails. Not exactly great customer service.A shame as even at the full price($378) this looks a very nice machine.
