  • very good price. paid $325 a week ago. it's slow compare to your ordinary laptop but it does the basic task fine.

    • if you guys still wanna pay $310 + $15 postage for it. you can search 1001HA on Ebay. There is only one who is selling
at that price. I think he still has plenty left.

  • hmmm uses the old atom 270 :( but good price overall i guess.

  • n270 runs at 1.60 not 1.66

    • Which makes me wonder what else is wrong in the specs ?

  • I'm looking for something to run Audacity and use with my Samson CO1 USB mic for recording.
    http://www.samsontech.com/PRODUCTS/productpage.cfm?prodID=18…

I don't need it to do much else except:

    • be quite
    • keep up
    • run Win 7
    • have good (3-4hr real world) battery life
    • run Audacity

    What do you reckon ?

(as stated the N270 is a 1.6Ghz CPU)

Am leaving for work now. If it's still avail in an hour when I get there… might have to get one. If not, it wasn't meant to be. :-)

    • -1

      I ordered one anyway :-)
Missed out on the bargain netbook last week.
Went to computer market last sunday to see what's going.
This is same price for NEW, with Win7, with 2-3x specs, as I saw for so much junk at Springvale market.

      • This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

    • At a guess, no. If you're recording a single track with no simultaneous playback, maybe. If you're looking to multitrack, forget it! My last audio workstation was dual core P4 w/ 3 GB RAM and a RAID array. For multitracking, RAM and hard drive throughput are paramount. A netbook is simply the wrong tool for the job: there are things they're good at, but audio recording and mixing isn't one of them.

  • +1

Good price especially including W7 starter .

  • +1

Very good deal, would love one of these, but already have enough pc's in the house :(

  • W7 Starter….GROSS. My 1000H runs W7 Ultimate like a dream with Aero.

    • +5

Yeah but your 1000H didn't ship with W7 Ultimate for $299 + freight.

      • -2

mod: removed discussion about piracy - this is illegal
also im bit confuse here about the model code.. should this (1001HA) better than 1000H ??
then i means i can run W7 ultimate on this notebook 1001HA since toadpain's 1000H is able ?

      • +1 on that statement Jason101

    • where did u get your ultimate w7 ??

      • if he bought it legitimately, the operating system would have cost more than the hardware!

    • windows 7 ultimate doesnt use more resources than any other version, it just has more features which are pointless unless u run them and use them.
so sayin it runs windows 7 ultimate is no different than w7 starter.
unless u are running w7 with all the features and apps going and its still fine, then let me know.

my 1000h cant even play hd video with overclocked settings and more ram

      • You might want to try looking at codecs then or vlc player its not all about hardware and os

  • definitely a good buy. use the money saved to upgrade RAM and HDD!

  • Do you guys think I can ask OW to do a price match?

    • Perhaps, but by the time you printed the page out, head down to OW and find someone to price match it for you it will probably be sold out, up to you. 299+post is a hot deal.

      • they didnt indicate limit stock so I wish I have luck by noon break :)

    • OW has XP installed!

      • It doesn't matter, XP will do for netbook :)

    • +1

Tried it this morning. They refused as it has XP and they said the battery may be a different model.

It has to identical to their stock to be matched.

  • Great deal! This is what I'm talking about, in for 1! Thanks OP.

  • +1

IMO, these netbooks will hit the $250 mark in about 6 mths so if you can hold out you might get an even better deal. I think prices will be slashed to compete with tablets and iPads in a few months. But this deal is too hot NOW, and would make a nice upgrade to my original 701.

    • +1

701? Dude, it's time to upgrade!

      • I think the 701 has the best form factor and have resisted getting one to replace it until now. The seashell seems to be a cool design and slim enough. Was actually going to load Jolicloud on the 701 this morning and close to buying a touchscreen for it. Might still keep the little beast as I'm quite attached to it.

        • I had this for awhile. It's certainly small and light but I couldn't type for long before cramping up. Plus the small screen really bugged me. That the tiny hard disk…

  • 1GB Ram enough to run win7? Really? Not in my experience, not smoothly anyway - seems like a misfit to put windows 7 on these netbooks doesn't it?

    • +1

My 1000H with 1gig of ram runs Ultimate with full effects perfectly fine. W7 is a lean mean fighting machine.

      • It's not a lean mean fighting machine. I've spoken about how dwm.exe and the audio enhancements waste RAM before.. (displaying a desktop can easily use 50megs RAM in win7 - having `sound' can use 20) etc etc. Win xp is a lean mean fighting machine, win7 is unnecessarily bloatware, that's why im surprised to see 1GB Ram machines running it. Having said that im not sure about home basic etc, obviously no aero would reduce usage.

        • But aren't "displaying a desktop" and "sound" basic functions of any GUI computer experience. It's a bit much to say that the OS is "wasting" 50MB and 20MB of RAM. It's not wasting them if they are being used to perform the core functions of the computing experience… surely ? People always say… Oh… such-and-such is using up blah-blah of my RAM. and My RAM is running at 47% usage. I say to those people… SO WHAT. Why have a system with GB's of RAM and not have them used. I say 47% is not enough. I want my OS to use ALL my RAM, every last KB. OK, we all know in real world, that's not practical, but you get my point. Having 4GB in your PC and trimming back the OS and Apps to use a "lean" 1.2GB is a stupid waste of money. You've got 4GB… PUT IT TO WORK.

          • @timjohns: This is a 1GB netbook, not a 4GB core i7.

And your argument is a bit misguided i think. No, windows xp does not need to use 20 megs of ram running a service for audio enhancement that is mandatory in order to have sound at all in the way windows 7 does. No windows XP does not run a ~50meg of ram service (dwm.exe) just to display a static desktop (why should that use so much anyway?). Of course they are core elements of an OS but there is NO NEED to have services running that are permanently resident in memory and that use so much RAM. As someone who has been through all of the services running in xp and win7 with a fine-tooth comb in order to establish what can and can't be disabled, im merely stating that to claim win7 is a lean, mean machine is absolute rubbish. It is just as bad as vista in some ways and even worse in others (unnecessary audio service enhancements could at least be disabled in vista, this is impossible in win7).

As for your "I've got 4 gig i want it all used argument".. as discussed in another thread this is unnecessarily putting up prices for the consumer who then has to pay more for more power due to inefficient coding on the part of the software designers. If you're happy to pay more than necessary good for u, many people have more money than sense and they are the ones who think win7 is a dream come true etc, im just saying if you go through it technically, it's inefficient and a rip-off, it isn't some messianic software.

    • Not everyone needs a super powerful computer. I have a HTPC for HD stuff and 99% of the time my netbook covers all other needs.

    • My benq gets 6hrs of wireless productivity, HD screen, full HD playback, 1.3kg and costed $400.

Wanna find me a better option that does those things?

    • +4

I can't understand why people post stupid comments.

  • +4

Windows 7 Starter does not include:

    • Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
    • Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
    • The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
    • Multi-monitor support.
    • DVD playback.
    • Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
    • Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
    • Domain support for business customers.
    • XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

For a netbook this is an awesome deal, I'd buy one if I actually had a use for the thing

    • Actually starter is looking good not bogged down with excess crap that it wont be able to run

      • -2

I would use vLite to strip down Win7 Ultimate to a Lite version. With 2GB Ram all should run smooth! :)

        • +2

WHY would anyone want to spend +$400 on Win 7Ultimate and then artificially create the same stripped-down version as Starter that comes for "free" with the machine. ???

          • @timjohns: Stripped down, yes. Like starter, no.

            • +2

@jondgls: Even still… I'm paying $300 for the computer. I'm not coughing up another $400 for a slightly better stripped down version of the same OS I'm getting for $300 with the computer :)

              • @timjohns: Like timjohns said, there's really no point paying extra for an OS when you're gonna strip all eye-candy off. That's very silly.

The main differences between an Ultimate and a Home Basic or Starter are the eye-candy, the Bitlocker encryption, a Media Center and the backup/restore facility.

If you're gonna remove the eye-candy, that leaves you with drive encryption which you can get for free (and way better) with TrueCrypt. And there's at least 5 different freeware programs that do a way more awesome job than the inbuilt Windows utilities for backup/restore, defragging and what not.

Which leaves you with a Media Center that XBMC does a great job of. I see really no point of getting an Ultimate Windows 7 especially if you're a Home user.

  • +1

+1. Great price for a relatively new netbook. So much so that I caved and got one! Hah. Wish I nabbed the S101 that was on sale at MLN for the same price a couple of weeks back (https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=658&typeID=). Anyone wanna trade? Hah.

My mate paid $399 for the 1005HA (same netbook except with different shell) in December last year.

Of course, the price will drop since the N450 and ION equipped processors are starting to get widespread. However, those netbooks will still cost in the $400 range.

Toss in W7 Starter and this is probably the best-value netbook at the moment!

    • 16GB HDD? Each to their own………..

  • Got one. Hopefully it's not one of those 'everyone orders and they can't fulfil them all' thing I experienced with the Rock Band drums from JB.
    …I really wanted those…

  • Seems like a pretty decent deal although i'm not sure if the 6-cell battery protrudes.

Anyone know if the 6 cell on this model sticks out a lot? I saw a review and the battery stuck out like 1cm or even .5cm but the reviewer didnt state the battery size!

    http://www.osgui.com/video/shows/viewvideo/1123/osgui-tech-s…
    From 4:00 onwards.

  • do u think i can play movie h264 720dp with this ? thanks

    • if you use coreavc's codec. the quality is reduced.

  • When is 2gb of ram going to be the standard for netbooks?

    • Actually, very soon. The 1GB limit was imposed onto manufacturers by Windows and their XP Home licensing. I don't think that applies to Win7 anymore. Can anyone confirm this?

      • It appears to be true.
Asus EEE PC's that will ship with 2GB are the models with Win 7 Home Premium.

Also, looks like the 10" models have Win 7 Starter and 1GB of RAM while the 12" models have Win 7 Premium and 2GB.
The 12" models are aimed as notebook replacements and will be priced similar to an entry level notebook ($599-$699 in OZ).

      • The 1GB RAM limit for shipping netbooks is imposed for WIN 7 STARTER by Microsoft on the manufactures.

  • Got one, definitely good buy with win7,and 8 hour time. going overseas in couple days so got another 9-10% of duty! :) hope they can deliver it though..

    • You'll need to add something so it $300 or more - shipping doesn't count.

  • No mention in the specs of an optical drive (i.e. CD/DVD burner/player).

And yet it comes with "CD software - Microsoft® Windows® 7 Starter."???

[Edit - Ignore query - my bad. Looks like most netbooks don't have optical drives! And I'd thought might be good for watching DVD's whilst travelling.]

Got one for the wife to stop us fighting over the laptop :)

I usually do my electronics shopping in Hong Kong (one of the cheapest places in the world - it's tax-free), but that is an amazing deal. If you consider that the price includes 10% tax they're selling for less than the cheapest Windows XP, non-LED screen, 3 cell battery, EOM branded, local warrenty only netbook currently goes for in Hong Kong.

I doubt we'll be seeing considerably cheaper than that for a long time. Especialy if the AUD loses its value (it's already gone down from its highs.)

Thanks OP for the heads up!

Dell has similar PC "Inspiron Mini10" with N280 processor.
Retail Price is $399 ,and when you use $100 off coupon and you can get it $299 with free shipping.
But you need to wait 10-12days for delivery.

    • Can you post a link please? I think the dell is hackintoshable so I'm interested. Even tho I just bought this..

      • This model is Hackintosh-able too.

    • Which coupon?

      • I think the coupon doesn't apply to the lower priced Mini10 "V" or is expired.

  • Update: I think OW can't do the price match, I went to the Brisbane CBD OW and asked for it. The guy took my prints and went back for a while, I saw he took a product box with him and asked me to wait for a while, then he back and told me they have no stock, the one he took is a repaired one blah blah blah…

    • +1

Did you call him a lair.

  • There is no Bluetooth built in, correct? Also, is the battery really 8 hours average use or rather 5-ish or so? Has anybody played with this model? Would you consider the Win7 to be faster than XP? I had an Acer netbook with XP, was not very convincing for basic Outlook, Word, and WM Player.

    • What specs was the model you tried, ASUS have a wide range of eeePCs running XP.

    • this one has bluetooh, and i saw in many forums, people say 6-7 hours is ok. ofcourse not while watching divx movies or playing highres games… normal use, yes battery is good.

      • Thanks to both of you for your replies. How do you know it has bluetooth, did I miss it on the product description? Wikipedia said "some models of 1001HA come with bluetooth". I had an Acer Aspire, 160GB, 1GB, Windows XP Home, in black (they had blue and white, too), cannot remember all details. Bought it at Officeworks back in the day, also had the Atom processor.

        • My friend have a 1001HA, his one do not have bluetooth.

          • @onebee: I'm guessing this one has no BT since it wasn't listed in the specs. Only way to find out is to email DOTD. But it might be sold out by the time you get a reply.

It wasn't a deal breaker for me. Also, the tiny USB BT transmitters are cheap.

            • @shawn_low: hmmmm yeah maybe no BT.. no idea, i decided not to buy

              • @CyberMurning: You decided not to buy because of lack of Bluetooth? Wow.

                • @ragflan: Not saying Bluetooth isn't important. Just saying that if you chose not to buy because of the lack of Bluetooth (when you can get mini-bluetooth adapters for like 2 bucks from DX) it is a little shocking.

                • @ragflan: Referring to erwinsie not shawn_low

  • The Dell offer is good (how do you get the $100 off?) Bigger HDD and slightly faster processor. If I read the specs carefully, I'm sure I'd spot some more benefits for the Dell (BTW my laptop is a Dell which I bought when Dells were super cheap - around $500 for a Duo core maybe 5 years ago.)

But on the Dell Wireless-N is about $30 more and essential. White is about $30 more and not essential (well for the mrs it is, though :D ) The battery is rated at only 6 hours (maybe the Asus's "Exclusive Super hybrid engine" makes the difference.) The Asus's "Easily zoom in and out with the multi-touch pad" also sounds good when you are working with a 10" screen.

Overall, I'm glad I went with the Asus, but they are both good deals. Especially if you want a black one :)

  • *** STOP PRESS ***

    Here's the Dell killer t&c:

"Limited time promotional offer only. No further discounts apply."

    So the Dell is $399++

  • Black one sold out I guess.

  • DOTD T+C:

Promotions in this newsletter begin at 12.01am 19/02/10 and end at 11:59pm 21/02/10 AEDT
unless stated differently in the listing and while stocks last.

  • nice deal,

  • +1

now this is called bargain!! just ordered 1, white 1 of course, black 1 ran out.. really need 1 for uni .. cheers ozbargainers :) peace

  • A bit off topic but I'm looking to pimp this netbook, does anyone know where I can get a touchscreen kit for this cheaply? DX is $60US+

  • Too slow and missed out, both now sold out :(

    • Still says 'in stock' though

  • OMFG…i paid $400 for this just 6 months back….
