Damn title, thought it was only $300 for the actual Ultrabook.
Damn.. I'd love to spoil myself and grab one of these.
I personally feel that i7 is a overkill on ultrabooks especially this gen.The price jump from i5 6200 to i7 6500 is huge when compared to the relative small performance gain.
It's not really an i7 though (as in being comparable to the i7 Skylake desktop variants). This is an i7 6500U. It's a dual-core, ultra-low voltage, mobile CPU.
The i7 moniker on the 6500U versus the i5 6200U is a misnomer (or deliberately deceptive marketing).
They are architecturally identical and are not distinguished by the inclusion Hyper-Threading. Just one is clocked slightly faster. Ideally they should both fall into the same "Core" range and be either i5s or i7s.It's not just a performance gain. The i7 model has a 3200x1800 res screen, as opposed to 1080p on the i5 version. That's where the cost difference comes in.
I have the i5 and its a great laptop. is this one with the 4k touchscreen? If not, not really a bargain.
13.3 inch QHD+ (3200 x 1800) InfinityEdge touch display
I know these are great but $2000+ for any laptop is ridiculous IMHO.
Its awesome, but you can drop it or leave it in a taxi any day of the week.
An Asus Zenbook would be closer to the mark for me with Ultrabooks.
http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-…You are right, it is too much to drop on a laptop but if you want the best, its a very short list that this dell xps 13 shares. If you side by side your linked model and this one, you see where the money is and it comes down to sensibility vs emotion. The dell is just plain sexy while the asus is just plain.
Agree in many ways. Not sure I would describe the Zenbook as "just plain" though.

This one is just an ad but its purdy

Yeah. I grabbed myself an ASUS transformer in February and it's great for uni and anything mobile. And I used the other $800 or so to upgrade my unit.
Lame alternative.
The RRP for the UX305FA is $1400 and for that it sports only 4GB of RAM, a significantly worse, last-gen processor with a far worse IGP (newer Intel HD Graphics 520 vs Intel HD Graphics 5300) and an undoubtedly worse display as there's really nothing that compares in the Ultrabook class to the Dell's QHD Infinity Edge (also boasts a higher resolution).
There's also no way the Zenbook is approaching the XPS 13 in terms of build quality and durability. It is thinner by a couple of A4 sheets of paper but the weight is the same.
I described how far I would go down the ultra-book road, my cut off point because $2000 is too much for me to spend on that "subject". The XPS 13 is excellent, no doubt about it.
You linked Asus' RRP - C'mon now this is OzBargain! Who pays that? The street price is ~$995

And finally, the Zenbook was upgraded to Skylake plus 8GB RAM for near the same price in the US, so hopefully soon here too. http://www.digitaltrends.com/laptop-reviews/asus-zenbook-ux3…

Only if you can use it for business too, therefore it's an expense. I wouldn't pay 2k for one, no.
Be interesting to see what the latitude variant will be priced like when it drops locally. Personally, I feel like anything higher than FHD on a 13+ screen is madness! Windows handles high resolutions so poorly, everything will be tiny and many apps just don't deal well with re sizing or font increases. Love this device though, I definitely see one of these coming my way when an 'as new' model hits DFO this year around my price point, (<$1500.)
Windows 10 does a decent job with scaling for high resolution screens.
You've never used a high end tablet or smart phone have you?
FWIW, I bought an i5 refurb from Dell Outlet during the week. FHD screen, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. Was only $1149.
That would be a great deal. I feel the ultra high rez screen is a waste at this size but opinions, assholes etc.
If you guys want to save some money check this website daily(at times they do not update, but when they do :) ) , http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…
Although they are factory refurbished, they work perfectly fine and there are even new ones added. I was able to grab basically the laptop described above, but last model's generation for $1539.I have the older model of this and can attest to how good these are. This newer model fixes alot of the minor issues with my model. Only quibble is that the screen doesnt fold all the way back and battery life is not even close to what dell quotes
What sort of battery life are you getting IRL? For example with browsing over wifi?
Checked a couple of JB Hifis today and they were comfortable to match the Dell online price however no one was willing to beat it by even $1 :-(
Ironically JB's slogan is "we won't be beaten on price"
they beat it by 2c, but then rounded it up. go figure!? ;-\
You can get an slightly higher older 2014 1080p touchscreen model for around $700-900 second hand but top condition
Where?
ebay has some otherwise pm me for a deal

13 inches is kinda tiny for a 2K laptop. 15 inch screen min if I was going to drop that much cash on it.
this is a business laptop for professionals, not for kids. i have an xps13 from 3 yrs agp and its been great. look forward to upgrading to the 2016 or 2017 equivalent model as it's an incredible laptop! not for everyone… btw, nrma/company discounts normally already give u 15-20% off dell's so not really a bargain this one :-]
No better Ultrabook on the market, hell almost laptop for that matter.
I bought this exact model was around $2124 during Boxing Day sale on dell website.
i5 version can be had for 1700. Price gap is not worth it in my opinion. Also QHD has scaling issues still and driver issues plaguing the Skylake gpu.
Personally I would wait until the refresh due feb/march with the iris graphic comfigs.
Not that cheap, previous deal's have been sub $2,000 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/224365 I picked the laptop up for $1,600 10 months ago.
Comment from the last post: It really depends what kind of laptop you're looking for. If you're looking for a good all round, thin and light laptop this is 100% for you. The build is just so much better than the yoga pro 3, I haven't used the Surface Book though, might be worth checking out. If you want something more for gaming, I would suggest an MSI GS60 or GS70. One thing to note with the QHD screens is windows zoom feature, which doesn't play well with applications that aren't optimised for it. Size is also great, with the screen almost to the edge the body is closer to a comparable 11" laptop, even with the 13" screen, which is perfect for the car or plane. If you're working from a desk I would suggest an external monitor which is easy via the mini display port.
Not fair to compare against Outlet prices, especially when there were only 10 units available.
Any recommendations for a 13-14" portable laptop around the $1400 range?
I've been looking around and it's a tough category to find something reasonably priced and specced.
At the moment leaning towards the Yoga 700 14" and replacing the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. Really looking for a 1080p screen, SSD, enough RAM and a newer i5 processor.
Would you be interested in Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro ? I have Silver one in 256 GB SSD brand new (sealed) , Will fall in your budget as well. Ta !
I read that as $300 for the unit … damn.
