Not sure about the GPU, apart from that a solid build for $800.

    • +2

      save $800..

      • +2

I see my typo now, missed "off" at the end of my sentence :/

    • +2

LOL… If you were a true OzBargainer you should have hit Buy on that for $800!!

      • -4

4 negs thats impressive. Purely a constructive comment to make people think whether or not the graphics card would suit their purposes for this laptop… Gaming with an Intel 520 GPU? I'd pass on that.

        • +1

          You miss the point.
It's a very good price for the specs.

        • @redcreek200:

Didn't miss the point at all my man. I simply wanted to point out (to the non tech savvy) that if people were to buy this as a work/gaming PC they may want to look elsewhere for a better GPU.

        • @stuffedcrust: I agree for those specs and price you would want a better GPU. Like having a race horse with bad feet. MSI has great performance options for around 1500-2000 so it seems a premium for the dell name.

        • @stuffedcrust:
          Ok. Fair enough.

        • It's not a gaming laptop, it's an ultrabook.

This would be like complaining about Toyota Corolla's not going from 0-100 fast enough, or a Yaris not being a very good people mover. Different classes. Get a car that suits you.

        • @lostn:

Thats a bad analogy, and you should feel bad :P I wouldn't say an SSD, i7 and 8gb ram translates to slow (or a Corolla) by any means.
This laptop is more like a Toyota 86. Excellent chassis, suspension and weight distribution, just missing a powerful engine to make it a complete package.

To the average buyer wanting to buy a cross-over work/gaming machine with decent specs they may see "intel" graphics and think because it says Intel it will suffice for gaming. This, as I explain again, was my intention to bring to the average buyers attention.

        • @stuffedcrust:
People think Intel graphics is suffice for proper gaming? :O

  • +2

I ordered one for my boss , it is light, well performance , perfect screen except the weak WIFI signal issue.

    • +39

      You can work for me!

    • I have had one for the past 4 months (got it for $1399), if you remove the dell wireless drivers and let windows find its own its much better. Also the dell drivers don't seem to pock up 802.11ac so you need to ditch them anyway.

  • -6

Great screen but no GTX m graphics. Disappointing combination as always. That's how Dell try to squeeze more money from you by making the product subtlety inferior, and then charge a fortune for a SSD.

    • +1

      The XPS 15 1080p i5/8GB/1TB is currently $1999 which has the 2GB 960M if that's something you'd prefer..

      • -8

Once they put in a 960m, the processor and drive become inferior.

        • +4

The i5 in the 15 is actually much better than the i7 in the 13..

    • +34

@coprocessor8087: You really need to stop banging on about the "no GTX M graphics" thing.
This is NOT a gaming laptop - Dell have the Alienware line for gaming. These are compact, thin and light ultrabooks, and very few of them include discrete graphics because very few people who buy this type of laptop want or need hardcore graphics. If it helps, think of it as a 13" Macbook Pro alternative.

The integrated GPU on these machines is designed to maximize battery life while keeping weight and thickness to a minimum. It's roughly equivalent to an 820M, if you're wondering - enough for 4K media playback, general office duties and perhaps some light gaming if you dial back the resolution and detail levels.

If you want gaming performance, get a gaming laptop! There are relatively small and light gaming laptops from Gigabyte, MSI, Clevo, Alienware and others that are far more suited to this application.

BTW - I agree with your complaints about SSD pricing. There's no excuse for it, considering the price of SSDs has been steadily dropping and they're now very affordable. My advice: buy a 5400rpm model and do your own SSD transplant for a $100 saving. It's dead easy to do in almost every laptop model.

      • +6

I agree with your assessment on the SSD. However, there are two things to consider:

        1. The SSD from Dell may be of the PCIe type (not SATA). I don't know about the XPS 13 but the XPS 15 ones are PCIe. PCIe SSDs are generally more expensive than SATA. Whether it's worth paying more for PCIe SSD is a different topic.

        2. I think the XPS 13 uses m.2 SSD, these are generally more expensive than the 2.5" equivalent.

Yes, the SSD prices have dropped but the deals on OzBargain are almost exclusively 2.5" SATA. PCIe m.2 are still expensive, at least more expensive than 2.5" SATA. But for any laptops that can cater for a 2.5" drive, DIY is always cheaper.

        • 2 good points, and I have no argument with either of them. If the laptop is only available with a PCIe and/or m.2 SSD, there's no need to replace it unless you want more storage.

However, if there's a cheap model with a mechanical 5400rpm drive, it will have the 2.5" SATA form factor. Which means that a 2.5" SATA SSD is a cheap and easy replacement.

        • Pretty sure the xps13 doesnt use sata.

I think xps15 does use 2.5" sata (with 5400rpm plus 32gb ssd) in the entry/standard setup but not in the premium where the larger battery takes up that same space. Picked up the entry level for that reason although I wished they had the option for touch in that FHD screen as I always have a tendency to poke at the screen nowadays on mobile devices.

    • +1

This is an ultrabook, if they put a graphics card in it then they would have to make the machine larger to accommodate the extra air needed to dissipate the heat and larger fans. With the current intel processors the onboard graphics are really awesome, it's not like the days of old where things on your machine would lag. The only thing you need dedicated graphics for these days are offloading rendering and playing games.

  • +3

"These specs are currently $2,599 so save yourself $800"

    How does $2599 - $800 = $1899?

    • +11

You get an imaginary $100 gift card by not having your morning coffee..

      • +3

I see that the imaginary saving has changed now :)

    • +1

I was thinking the same thing. Title needs to be amended

      • +1

        It is, he's fast :)

  • +1

Great price for a great laptop. Hanging out for a good deal on the 15.

    • shoulda picked one up during ebay 20% tech sale

      • Didn't want the FHD - hanging for the QHD (or whatever the high res touch screen is)

  • Actual current price for it is $2499.

    $2499 - $1899 = $600

So you would actually only be saving $600.

You were looking at the Gold one on the Dell site which is going for $2599. The only difference between them is Windows 10 Pro (which isn't worth $100).

    • This has Win10 Pro?

      • -4

Yes… Which I pointed out isn't worth the extra $100. A key for Windows 10 is about $20, if you know where to look.

        • +2

Reddit MSDN keys aren't a bargain

        • Where?

        • -2

@charisma: XeKToReX even knew the answer himself. Just have a quick look before he goes to negative.

    • +5

Unless you must have the Mac badge or is this is superior to the retina macbook 13 in every way.

    • It's a great deal for anyone who is interested in purchasing an XPS 13 specifically.

    • +4

Pretty sure the ideapad is a different range equivalent to the XPS. A Dell equivalent would be the Inspiron range.

      • I dont know what you mean by different range but just what I have said its the same specs or better than this for a lower price is not a bargain

        • +1

you probably have to compare the XPSs with the Thinkpads not Inspiron as nayfon said

    • And how thick is the screen bezel on your Lenovo/Asus/whatever else you want to compare?

  • +1

An excellent laptop, I've owned it for six months. Any questions just let me know.

    • If your company give you $2000, which new laptop are you going to buy?

      • Unless you need graphics, this one. Every time.

I have had the previous model since April and it is fantastic. This is a great price for the 1800p touch screen, but for mine, the 1080p matte non-touch is better and gives better battery life.

      • It really depends what kind of laptop you're looking for. If you're looking for a good all round, thin and light laptop this is 100% for you. The build is just so much better than the yoga pro 3, I haven't used the Surface Book though, might be worth checking out. If you want something more for gaming, I would suggest an MSI GS60 or GS70. One thing to note with the QHD screens is windows zoom feature, which doesn't play well with applications that aren't optimised for it. Size is also great, with the screen almost to the edge the body is closer to a comparable 11" laptop, even with the 13" screen, which is perfect for the car or plane. If you're working from a desk I would suggest an external monitor which is easy via the mini display port.

  • -2

LOL. Funny how people whinge about Apple MacBook prices

    • +4

For anyone who's curious - the equivalent 13" i7 MBP with 256Gb SSD has a $2799 RRP. That's $200 more than the RRP of this specific machine, and $900 more than this deal. You can make up your own mind as to the value proposition of each.

      • I'm not an apple fan and never owned / will own a macbook

But the MBP has a 28W processor which is in a dfifferent league to the 15W processor included in this

        • +2

A fair point - there's no direct equivalent, so I just went with the one that's closest in major specification (screen size, resolution, processing power).

They're not in "a different league" though - a quick comparison of benchmarks suggests that the i7-5557U in the MBP 13" is about 11% more powerful, which isn't huge in the scheme of things (and matches the 10% higher price nicely).

  • I would like to know what is DELL's definition of "AS NEW' laptops. I have worked with HP and Compaq (PURPLE HP) and for us refurbished laptops with minor scratches or even dents were acceptable and were sold "AS NEW".

    • +2

There is a current thread here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168009) and plenty of information on other forums (whirlpool, reddit, etc).

The general consensus is that they are an excellent buy and generally come in pristine condition even the "refubrished" models.

  • -8

Wow, a $2000 laptop and it doesn't even come with a DVD drive.

    • +2

      Ultrabook*

    • Cheap, thick laptops often come with them. Thin, light ultrabooks almost never come with them. Even the 15" XPS doesn't come with them. Most people don't need them these days. If you do need them, take it into consideration obviously, but it's extremely common to see laptops, especially high end ones, not come with one.

      • You can always get a USB optical drive as well. If you're after an ultrabook then most people would prefer a slimmer and lighter laptop and then an optical drive for the few times at home they need one.

    • +4

DVD drive? you really need one these days?

      • Yes. Call me old fashioned.
I still frequently watch movies on my laptop from my vast DVD collection.
It also doubles as a CD player for some of my old music collection.
I also use many software programs that are disc based and frequently 'burn' discs.
It's a disturbing trend but optical drives are going the way of the dodo, fortunately it's a gradual phase out.

        • +1

Nothing wrong with dvd's, just watch it on TV not laptop, enjoy the movie experience :)
CD? not even some new car's comes with CD players anymore, well convert your CD's mp3.

if you really want a CD player for laptop, USB DVD player way to go. But really you don't need one :)

        • @boomramada: A removable DVD drive is a bad idea, well because it's not built- in and therefore needs to be connected everytime you use it.
Portability is not really a concern for me so I will just buy the highest specced laptop with a DVD drive until they become obsolete.
On a side note, JBHIFI sells thousands of music CDs in store, so somebody must still be buying them!

        • it's not built- in and therefore needs to be connected everytime you use it.

DVDs aren't built in either. They have to be removed from the case and inserted every time you want to use one. It would he far more convenient to carry your vast DVD collection around with you on a hard drive.

        • LOL, you still watch SD quality movies? I can't imagine how a 576p movie on DVD will look on a 3200x1800 screen.

At least get Bluray which still won't be native resolution but will look a lot better.

        • @wolfenator87: You considered a desktop? They're even better if you don't care about portability.

    • What's a DVD?

      • The medium of choice between cassette/VHS and bluray LOL.

    • +2

If you need a DVD drive, you probably don't need an XPS

  • Does anyone know whether or not similar Dell XPS laptops pop up often on the refurb site? I have been considering this one but haven't actually seen it in person and wanted to get a look at the build quality/keyboard.

    • Check out some reviews, it appears to be well reviewed.

They come up occasionally, not posted often as there isn't usually the minimum 10 in stock for OzB's rules.

      • Yeah will do! I just can't make up my mind between this and the Surfacebook… Although the surfacebook does seem so expensive I really do like the way it looks, and detaches from the keyboard.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this and the 15" for a while, I guess they might come down further in price with time as I don't desperately need one.

        • I don't like the screen gap when the thing is closed.

        • @lostn: Agreed. Possibly a fix for this will be in next years version

        • @padfoot07: It's also a bit thicker than I'd like. Not much you can do about that since all the processing has to be on the screen side, but the keyboard side could be a bit thinner.

I think I'd rather have a Surface Pro than a Book.

If you use the SB as a touch screen, it will wobble. The screen is not stably attached.

    • Try getting the "As New" ones listed there. Check back on the refurb site daily. My girlfriend got a New XPS15 (as in skylake model with the ultrathin bezel) about two weeks back from here. New stock comes all the time and yes, they get XPS13 / 15s in semi-often.

      • Awesome. I might pass on this particular deal then and wait until I've actually made up my mind!! What made her go with the XPS15 over the 13?

        • +1

The XPS15 has a more powerful CPU and includes a discrete video card (the 960m, which is roughly equivalent to the desktop 750ti in power and memory). She wanted to be able to do some mid range PC gaming. The 960m will run stuff like GTAV on fairly acceptable settings, it will run Witcher 3 on a mix of medium/high settings at playable framerates, etc. It absolutely destroys stuff like DOTA or CS: Go. The XPS13's integrated will do DOTA / CS Go at lower settings, but modern graphically intensive games are a complete no go. Still, the integrated doesn't do too badly on last-gen games from a few years back, surprisingly playable on some.

        • @ThoseDeafMutes: the battery life would not be so good though I assume?

        • @Circly: The battery is quite good for web browsing / normal usage. When you are actually playing games themselves, it's shorter, but it defaults to using the intel integrated graphics for most light tasks.

      • What were the specs & how much did she pick it up for?

        • i7 / 256gb ssd / 8gb ram variant. Normally 2500, available as new for 2100 from the outlet.

  • Thanks for posting this OP. I am waiting on the 15" personally but might wait for the prices to go down first.

    • +1

No probs, if I see any 15 deals I'll try to remember to PM you!

I'm surprised to see 6th gen 13's in the Outlet already so you might be lucky!

  • +2

Fantastic laptop for most purposes. It's light, it's slim, and the build quality is very high. Sister is using the XPS13 (Broadwell model) from earlier this year, my girlfriend has the 15 (Which is the same, but bigger and with discrete 960m graphics). Both are A+ windows laptops.

If you need the graphics, consider the 15 (note on the refurb site, if it says "4th gen intel…" it's the OLD XPS15, not the new one, and it's still good but much less powerful graphics, and its not as thin / lacks the amazing display that this year's one comes with). If you want a premium windows laptop for general use, you won't go wrong.

My biggest complaint here is that it's a bit of a mess trying to order them from the outlet site. You have to get on some live chat, quote the lot number, then get on the phone and give them your card details. It's not that hard but it takes some time and effort, versus normal online purchasing procedures.

  • I believe this is sold out. "As new" products: these are the products that have never been used by an end user but may have been reconfigured by Dell. Dell pre-configured new system do not have any cosmetic damage.

    • Can anyone confirm, I will mark as expired.

  • I picked up an i5 xps13 FHD but not touch from the dell outlet for about $880 2 years ago now. Looked like a brand new machine, no scratches or blemishes at all. The current deals seem quite expensive although obviously higher specs.

The HD is indeed a PCIe based one and they are more $ than regular 2.5"ssd.

Only real problem is the screen has a couple of cracks in it which is probably from me picking it up by the screen corners. Easy to do when its so light!

I also have a work supplied 13" mac book pro which I had always assumed was a 15" as it felt so much larger than the Dell XPS.

  • Sold Out - Just tried to buy one. They are now trying to up sell me

  • +5

For those who think this is expensive. Please do some research on this machine first.

This is a game changer, arguably the best ultrabook of 2015.

It is a 13 inch QHD+ screen fitting into a size of a usually 11-inch laptop, a laptop which is smaller than the asus zenbook of same screen size.

If you are comparing to a macbook with way inferior cpu )Pentium M) or a macbook air which is literally hasn't changed much in the last 5 years apart from CPU upgrade, or about to start another battlefront between mac OS and windows… then yeah I do not know what else to say.

    • +1

It's not a game changer at all. Most Ultrabooks are heading in this direction, generally the thickness and weight of the laptop matter a lot more than height and width. My personal preference is having a thicker bezel on the screen, it "frames" my screen contents and tends to be less distracting.

The Surfacebook and Macbook are bigger game-changers than the XPS13, one that provide a lot of flexibility and features while the other trims everything down to the bare basics for portability. That being said, XPS is still one of the top contenders in the high quality ultrabook market and Dell seems to be the most reliable company around since other laptop makers are constantly at risk of just dropping their laptop business like Sony or to some degree Samsung.

IT IS EXPENSIVE, but that's only because you are getting good quality and expensive components. Even Lenovo's quality has been dropping over the years and they still charge a hefty premium.

      • You like a thick bezel? Seriously?

Well how about when you take this design and apply it to a 15" laptop, like say the XPS15?

15" screen in a 13" equivalent size chassis sounds pretty good to me.

        • It's buffer for reading to the edge of the screen between the contents and the distractions behind the screen. I think super thin bezels are quite ugly and impractical.

It's not as if they can't already just scale up the design of the XPS13 to the 15 and shave 3 cm of the width/height, but they probably realise it's not actually that amazing a design choice and know that it's mostly thinness and weight that affects portability.

        • @NoRotation: They already did in the new XPS15.

  • damm, hope they will get some more back in stock. Love my Latitude Ultrabook at work.

  • -1

    How is this a bargain?

  • $700 off RRP should qualify….

  • Dammit missed out
