      Why would they give you the extra 10%? That was the DS promotion. You receipt would show you paid $100 for a $110 DS GC for example. Coles will issue you with a $100 Coles card only. That's how I am assuming it would work anyway.

        Yes, a friend just confirmed this with Coles. Basically you have to send your cards into Coles with your proof of purchase and once verifield you will be issued with a Coles gift card. Make sure you use registered post. He was told you could not take cards back to Coles stores.

        No I'm not reading that at all, this isn't A Current Affair or Choice magazine suggesting call your issuer and cross your fingers; this is ASIC advising an action which to me would imply it relates to some law or regulation on either or both the provision of credit or buying a dud instrument.

          It is ASIC saying you might as well give it a go. From a legal standpoint, if you can prove that DSE sold the cards to you knowing that they would be going into administration and that gift cards would not be honoured then that is a breach of contract. if you can't prove that, then they sold you a card, that was valid at the time of sale.

          Laws and regs are very muddy in this kind of territory, especially for regular customers (the ol' "unsecured creditors"). Essentially, you're the last one in a very long line of people asking for their money back.

          If they make it to you and have some money left, congrats! More often than not they won't. That's why they're in administration in the first place.

      There is no legal requirement for CC to refund since the gift card was delivered as described. So no not entitled.

      However the bank may refund at their discretion, depending on customer relationship and card type (ie Platinum might get VIP treatment vs a zero fee card).
      So that is why they are saying to talk to the card issuer, dont know until you have a go.

        Some credit cards have included warranty protection. Gift card holders might be able to get a refund using that.

      Unfortunately gift card holders are considered unsecured creditors - which means they get the dregs left over when everyone else has been paid out (if at all).

    Even if there is an (imo unlikely) chance of Dick trading out of this, their reputation is destroyed (has been so progressively thanks to their own stupidity right) and continuing to trade will just be delaying the inevitable.

    it's good to see Coles and Kogan trying to help out consumers. Although I still can't get my head around why people would buy Dick Smith gift cards in the first place (except if they were on discounted) - their prices and service are terrible lol

      You answered your own question - 'discounted' is the one and only reason. It offered $110 value for $100 cash paid- essentially around 9% discount. So if you were going to get an iPad or Mac anyway might as well get the gift cards and save another 9% off the purchase price. It is significant given Apple products are in the range of $500-$1000.

        No it doesn't, I scratch them almost as soon as I get one. Nothing worse than holding up the checkout queue whilst you try and scratch it (the gift card :-) ).

          It gets declined, you find out it still has $0 on it and wasn't load correctly when purchased

          How would you of found that out without scratching it and trying to use it?

          @Firey1989: You've got the "Associated" tag… either you should know this, or you work in an unrelated department. Go ask MAPS if you work at Battle Star Galactica or your store manager if you're a store personnel.

          Also, I said no refund (i.e. general policy), not no exchange. They are 2 different things. The current exchange this thread is about is a special case, and not part of the normal refund policy.

          If anything went wrong with activation, you call up the number on the back of the card (Retail Decisions/WEX, Blackhawk Networks, Indue), and they help you out. Coles don't get involved in this.

    Coles are awesome. I am so loyal to them since I became an online grocery shopper at the start of 2015 - they are ALWAYS on time with the delivery and if they ever screw up my order, they own the mistake immediately, apologise and fix it. I love them like I never thought I would love a supermarket. I tried Woolies out a few times to compare - total nightmare, terrible service…deliveries 4 hours late…never again.

    Just called up the Coles that I bought my gift cards from and they said that with gift cards if you leave the store you can't refund them back. So that's a no from my local Coles

      You have to send them back to coles head office with you proof of purchase to be verified first. You cant get this done in store. Call HO and they will email you a form and relevant details about making your claim.

      Given that most customer interactions the staff had would be negative, I'd imagine these would be extremely positive interactions and the customer would be super happy. Id take these any day over someone who is claiming their grapes taste funny or the deli gave them 7 drum sticks when they asked for 6

      One of the posts above says you have to post them in, no walk in swaps. So they can take their time checking the balance on the card before sending you a Coles card with the equivalent value. Given that often gift card programs are run by a third party on behalf of the merchants, the database will then not be at DSE.

        I bet the reason why they want these DS gift cards to be sent off to head office is that they want some one there to some how verify the balance on the gift cards before any monetary value on a Coles gift card is issued. They probably don't trust the staff at the stores to be able to do that.

          it'll likely be a coles supermarket gift card and not a coles group and myer gift card which can be spent at coles express…

          However, Coles is only offering to exchange the Dick Smith cards for gift cards that can be spent at the Coles supermarkets not any of the other Wesfarmers-owned retailers, which includes Bunnings, K-mart and Target.
