Bit more information if anyones interested: http://www.topfield.com.au/uploads/65745/ufiles/firmware/970…

dickie … I need some more $2 HDMI cables and $5 eneloops …. cmon you know you want my money now :)

    • +2

I had a look in one in Perth CBD yesterday lunchtime, $49 for a standard HDMI cable and 1 customer.

      Stunning.

      • Was thinking of getting an apple car charger from DSE before they fold, only went into the store and realized it's asking for $50 for an in house branded charger…

        you've gotta be dreamin'

        • -1

given that they're broke, try bargaining with them
creditors will be all too happy to accept virtually anything for physical items, so you could probably pick it up for around $20

        • @samdiatmh:

2.0A chargers are $12-15 from local shops… and since this is a liquidation sale… I would be expecting $5 or less since it's not even a 2.0A charger.

        • -3

          the point is still there
offer what you think is a reasonable value (with reference to them being down the gurgler) and see what you can get away with
any cash you can give them is better to an administrator/liquidator than a physical item

I picked up a Tiger Woods shirt for around 60% of retail just after his marriage scandal broke (because well he's not a reputable) and was happily accepted by the person selling it

        • +2

          @samdiatmh:

I understood that one of the main differences between JB Hifi and Dick Smith was that DS staff did not have the authority to negotiate prices. Why do you think this has suddenly changed?

        • +2

          @samdiatmh:
How many liquidators are manning the registers at Dick Smith do you think? I doubt its the employees prerogative to set prices.

          edit: Ninjas everywhere

        • +2

@jdr: This was one of the long time myths that caused massive problems for Dick Smith in regards to how they were perceived by customers - Most of the marketing up until the IPO was based around breaking this perception (Dick Does Deals, We Do Deals, etc) as it was causing customers to treat Dick Smith as a showroom/place to get advice from sales stuff, then they'd go around the corner to JB and negotiate with them. I recall strongly advising my staff essentially to call out customers about this and emphasis tell customers that we were happy to negotiate/haggle before they left the store to go to the competition. I'm somewhat aware that post IPO they dialed this activity back a bit, but I'm not sure if they completely eliminated salespeople's authority to discount.

Right at this moment? Don't expect a cent discounted, that's not how businesses under administration work. Even if they do close and liqudiate stores, it will be outsourced to a liquidation firm, who will take fixed percentages off RRP, gradually reducing prices as it gets closer and closer to the last day of trade.

        • +1

          @Boochan:
Well that's news to me that staff could negotiate. Bit late now :)

        • @samdiatmh:
Except, staffs working there probably aren't that concerned about satisfying their creditors yet. I doubt they even know what's going to happen yet.

Dick Smith again!! please do not post anything for DS which they are either take you money and go or no stock in store.

  • I suppose there'd be no harm in buying this in cash/credit card in store, warranty will be honored by Topfield either way. Good price :)

    • The sale is labelled as "KNOCKOUT DEALS! Online Exclusive Offer ends today!"

  • +4

Finally something to use my gift card on ;)

    • +1

if u can get it accepted

    • +1

You must haven't read the news……

    • they no longer accept gift cards. Disksmith has gone under administration.

      • +8

        I think y'all missed my ;)

      • +1

They do let you use gift cards to buy more gift cards.

    • +3

      Whoosh…

  • Thanks , just ordered one for my parents.

    • Let us know if you can pick up or it deliver.

      • I choose Pick up from my Local Store.

I will update once I got the item.

      • wow, that was quick, just got a SMS saying my order is ready for collection.

      • +1

picked the item few minutes ago.

  • Given the lack of Netflix, catchup TV etc, and the presence of component video out, I'd say this must be a very old model.
Does it even have DLNA for the LAN?

Looks just like the ancient Sony I just replaced in the December Dick-Smith firesale.

  • +6

(profanity) Dick Smiths!!! MY gift cards!!!

    • +2

      My precioussssssss….

  • +1

Ordered and paid through Paypal for protection. Let's see if it's available for pickup.
Anyone know if this thing has apps, specifically Netflix?

    • Good luck getting funds back from PayPal if goods don't show up. I'm sure there are PayPal conditions for payments made to companies where it was public knowledge that a businesses went into administration. Even if there was going to be a refund from the administrator, I believe there generally are lengthy waits to receive funds.

      • I don't think you are right.
Buyer Protection has to mean something, or else why should they act as a "middle-man" and get a 1% share per transaction.

  • +2

I would be cautious buying anything click-n-collect from DSE while they are under administration.

There is at least one report of delivery being cancelled although @kipps has posted that:

Administrators are personally liable for the debts they incur while trading on the business. See section 443A Corporations Act.

Safest is to pay by credit card and if there are problems hope that bank will accept a charge back.

    • +2

Pay by paypal, double protection =)

      • They will. The merchant provider (NAB or HSBC in this case) will bear the risk for chargebacks.

  • +7

    just don't deal with them
    go in store or nothing.

    /end

  • Thanks! I was after one of these last time I vaguely saw it for a ~$39 price.

  • Got SMS: ready to pick up.going to get that.

    • I wonder if you could check for stock in the store, hold it in your hand while you place an online order and then march up to the counter and collect?

  • +2

Don't forget the extended warranty ;)

    • haha. and some $50 high quality DSE HDMI cables too.

      • They'll be $5 again soon. Fantastic quality at that price.

  • Wondering how this would go playing videos from my NAS, as I'm looking to upgrade my WD TV player…

  • If it goes bust, you only have yourself to blame.

  • Excellent, I got a DSE gift card for Xmas and this would be the perfect way to …. never mind >_<

  • +12

Dick Smith "deals" should be BANNED from Ozbargain.

If you must, buy IN STORE ONLY. They should take their online store offline as it is no longer a going concern as confirmed by the administrators.

    • +4

Concur, so many people stitched by by deal smiths deal posted this week, they really should be banned. Without those posts people wouldn't be stuck with useless giftcards.

      • +2

Both my orders are awaiting collection. It's perfectly fine. If not you have your credit card dispute mechanism to fallback on.

This is ozbargain, the best time to get a bargain is when a company is in voluntary administration :)

        • -1

I also think that a website-sale represents a legal offer from a business for a service or good.
Your online purchase is a legal agreement of an exchange between you and that business: of money, for goods.
If no goods are supplied, then the money is returned.
It is still trading as indicated in the letter, with employees receiving wages etc,.
Terms and conditions still are listed:
          https://www.dicksmith.com.au/terms-and-conditions#3

        • +1

@marcozmitch: The DSE I picked them up from had signs up about gift cards not being accepted at present and suggested "they'd be back to normal trading" at some point..

    • If you look at the bottom of the Online store's website, you'll see this: "© 1997 - 2016 Dick Smith Electronics Pty Limited. All Rights Reserved.
(Receivers and Managers Appointed) (in Administration)"

In other words, the online store prior to 5th Jan is no longer a going concern - but purchases made as of yesterday are made to the administrators, not to the previous entity.
…not that I'd be buying anything from them regardless at this stage.

      • I'd like to wait for the new DSE (in Admin) ABN to be updated to the website so the purchases made are actually made to the administrators, otherwise, if the confirmation e-mail is still sent out from old DSE ABN, I would think you are still trading with the broken DSE.

  • +1

They can take your money and don't have to honour suppling goods

  • +3

Beware paying for goods and doing C&C. I got eneloop pros 2 days a go I get a phone call today telling me they aren't in stock and that either I grab a normal cheap pack or lose my money. I opened a PayPal dispute hopefully they will understand the situation and give me a refund

  • can this player play blu-ray disc from uk or japan?

    • UK and AU same BD Zone B, Japan is Zone A.

      • cool. thanks

        • Unless you're interested in Jpop concert BDs, they are region-free.

  • nor.. just movies and animation

  • I wonder if they will have an "administation" shopping code?

  • +3

I don't think anyone should be posting Dick Smith deals while they are not honoring recent purchases.

"Dick Smith customers left out of pocket on undelivered goods, lost deposits and gift cards" - http://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/dick-smith-cu…

    • +1

      Read the article more carefully.
      Dickie is not the Administrator.

"In a blow to customers, Ferrier Hodgson this morning released a statement confirming that it would not honour outstanding gift vouchers or refund deposits paid for goods.

But the firm said it would continue to pay Dick Smith’s 3300 employees and keep the chain’s 393 stores running during the restructure."

      • I'm not sure the impacted customers care who the Administrator is. Dick Smith was still happily taking orders for goods and gift cards up until the day the administrators took over knowing full well the extent of their financial crisis, so they're hardly off the hook. Granted it was pretty apparent for a long time there were issues, but there's people that placed orders in good faith on the assumption the stock was on hand only to be put on back order and now in limbo. Had the inventory system been accurate, some of those customers may had not placed orders.

      • The Administrators are DSE for the foreseeable future. Basically the only sane way to buy from them now is in person when you have the item in your hand before you give them the cash. This is an online deal so its risky, and not everyone knows they can get their fingers burned. If they do nobody at DSE or the Administrators will help them.

  • +1

just picked up. so dickie just honored my online order, on the same day! strange! may be lucky as I ordered first. Last time dickie pissed me off by refunding after 1 and a half week later saying no stock.

  • I got mine from Burwood NSW.

DO NOT ORDER FROM DS ONLINE
My Ipad pro 32G ordered on 23rd Dec $999 !! is still showing as 'Processing'. It was fully paid online using Gift Cards.
It did say normally take 7-14 business days to deliver, so it is going to be a very painful wait….
Just hope Apple is still supplying them.

But avoid buying from their online shop at all cost.

    • Just be patient and update us.
I would be very interested to see what happens.
They still show for sale online with low stock and a price of $1248…

      • +4

Tried for 3 days and still can't get through to the generic helpline. Went to a Dick Smith store this morning and the 'assistant' manager told me that they have quite a few customers paid in full instore as well and they are still waiting for stocks to fulfill those orders with no ETA. I now know why they were lowering the Ipad pro 32Gb price to 999 just before Xmas. What a thief !

        • Utter thievery. Totally indefensible unless you have a vested interest.

  • Shows as temporarily out of stock… Deal expired?

    • C&C is still available, are you able to enter your postcode in [check store stock] and see if it's available for pick-up at your nearest DS store?

  • +1

    I ordered one.

  • +1

I ordered one online for C&C. Got invitation to pick it up in 2 hours. Have it now at home.
    It's brand new. All sealed.
    All good so far.
Going to test it later today.

    • but don't know if all other stores is as efficient as the one you got from.

    • Let us know about the network features please.

  • got email ready to pick up at Mirrabooka store after only 90 mins of checkout. Very efficient i believe.

    • at what time did you order?

      • 11:50am

  • +1

finger cross there is a buyer for dse n honour those gift cards. it's sad to see this gone as i had so much fun with the name of the business, and so do you guys i think.

  • +1

Happened to pass by a dickies and thought I'll try my luck. Picked one up from the shelf then asked them to give online price. Took less than 5 minutes :P

  • +1

    I'm just after tests.

    Here go results:
    - no idea what for network is. It connects (acquires IP from router). No network media player functionality at all.
    - plays DVD, BD and BD 3D very nicely
    - region locked to B. There is Country Change option in Setup but it does nothing
    - it plays only CD layer of SACD discs even though SACD is mentioned in user guide and respective option exists in Setup
    - quiet in operation

I didn't test USB media player.

All in all - good BD player for amazing price.

  • Ban these scumbags. They knew what was around the corner yet continued taking deposits, offering ridiculous prices for goods they never intended to supply and selling gift cards like it was business as usual. Four separate purchases in the past month from them that I had to involve paypal with due to non-delivery.

    • This a $36 item.
They either have them in stock or they don't.
These BD players don't upscale, so they are out-dated, but still good quality.
I have every confidence of my order being fulfilled and was going to order 2, but consider my PS3 is still good enough.
Please provide details of your purchases that have not been delivered…Christmas and leading up to Christmas is a busy time of year.
It would be nice to know if they "rip anyone off" apart from the unhappiness over gift cards.

      • It's obvious you haven't dealt with them much. But continue acting like you have. I like me some shadenfraude.
Either that or you work for Ferrier Hodgson.

        • Seriously dellbon, I don't care for taking pleasure in your or anyone else having misfortune with DICK SMITH.
I strongly believe you deserve to be protected by consumer law and must get all your money back if you don't get the goods.
It would be illegal for me to communicate with any website/media outlet/whatever, if I did work for Ferrier Hodgson.
I will be pissed off and angry if any fellow Oz-Barginer gets dumped on by them.

  • -3

    You doth protest too much.

    • Picked up my BD player yesterday and they had a pile of 5 more sitting on the shelves, un-purchased.

  • +1

This deal still active and some stock left in SA branches.

  • anyone know how old this model is? I can't see any manuals, firmware updates etc. - just the image showing the detail/specs and rear connections

  • Picked up the BD player today. :)

    • only disappointment is no hdmi cable included. :(
