seems brushless is the craze …..more run time and power from the same battery, so although cordless kits seem a bargain, check if it's the brushless version of tools they bundle or the old brush motor types.

    • +2

Brushless is not a craze, it's been known for ages it's motor out performs all others

      • brushless = a type of motor system over brushless? physically same (externally) machine?

        • Different internal components regarding the transfer of electricity into mechanical energy through the motor.

        • +6

Brushed motors have wire brushes to deliver electricity into the spinning bit (the rotor). The brushes create friction (heat) and eventually wear out. DIY around the house will never wear it out; matters only to professionals who use their tools everyday.

Brushless motors use strong permanent magnets in the rotor instead. Less friction, less heat, no brushes to wear out, and the batteries last longer. But again, for DIY around the house you're unlikely to ever notice the difference. Only matters to professionals.

Brushless are aimed at professionals so they typically cost a little more and might have premium features like better clutch and better gearbox. But top-end brushed are usually just as good except for the motor.

Brushless is definitely better though. If you want the best, you buy brushless.

        • The main difference is that brushless only uses the torque require for the job. If you're drilling into a piece of foam it will only draw a tiny bit of current, but if you hit wood it'll sense the resistance and push more current to the motor to keep it spinnning at the set speed. Brushed motors on the other hand will just have maximum power/torque all the time (hence why brushless lasts longer on the same battery).

        • @nhand42: Thanks for the detailed reply. Would you say they are pretty better regardless?
I see an 18V Ozito (sounds awful) on Bunnings, Cordless, Brushless, with case, 2 batteries, charger rack for $160
But on a few review sites, some indication it might lose 'grip' on the drill bit in the head (but that was 15% of reviews, rest seemed happy)

        • @hamwhisperer: I wouldn't touch Ozito. They're a budget brand. Stick to a good brand like Milwaukee or Bosch BLUE.

Pretty sure this is the same kit as before and the motors aren't brushless, they smell real nice when running though…

  • Its been this price for ages now..

  • Thanks for the post. How does this Dewalt compare to

    http://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18v-lxt-mobile-brushless-h…

Which one is better value for money?

  • +1

Depends on usage. Its not an investment so if you're an occasional handyman then it's not necessary to purchase anything more expensive rhan this. All about fit for purpose.

  • Masters has the 14.4v dewalt for the same price. Was going to post but i was looking to see if it included batteries etc as the box doesnt say

  • How does it compare to this deal - Bosch kit for same price with hammer drill, impact driver and torch? http://www.bunnings.com.au/catalogue#page=offer&params=power…

    • +1

I bought the Bosch kit http://www.bunnings.com.au/bosch-18v-ultimate-3-piece-cordle… I got it for $179 and its fantastic and I dont know how I lived with out it :)

I love the chuck locker make tightening up drill bits so easy and the Impact Driver has huge power, I keep snapping the screws I'm using lol (jarrah wood is making it a tough job).

      • I cannot access your link

        • Fat City linked to a catalogue and I couldn't see it.

      • This is OT but I'm currently laying merbau decking and have been snapping some screws, have determined it's because my pilot holes weren't big enough so I've gone up to a 12g pilot hole in the merbau (for 10g screws). Since making that little change I haven't snapped any screws and my impact driver hasn't had to work so hard (I also stopped snapping all my #2 square bit drivers)!

        • +1

          I love lamp

        • Yer I should have pre drilled the hole bigger, at first I was just screwing the screws straight in without the pilot holes, ah well job done in the end lol.

        • +1

Another tip, which I've used when screwing in to old, dry jarrah (similar consistency to concrete!), is to grab a bar of soap and rub each screw across it before you screw it in. It lubricates the screw and it goes in easily, even without a pilot hole.

          @banana365:

Plus your decking gets cleaned every time it rains. Win win!

Hasn't this always been this price??? I've been waiting to pounce on a 18v brushless Dewalt deal for about 3 months now, so have had bunnings page refreshing in my browser every now and then. No change as far as I'm aware.

For those that don't know, voltage is mainly the power (requires less current from battery) - higher is better.
Brushless is a more powerful tech (by design), longer lasting (simpler) and also probably makes the battery last longer.
The Ah of the battery is how long they last, but also longer to charge normally (more is better).
The batteries are generally the thing that costs a lot for cordless drills, apart of course from the complex, powerful skins. An impact driver probably doesn't cost that much.

    • Thanks for all the info

    • Im sure this is normal price.

    • +1

Remember this dewalt deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150832 for $200?

Best tool purchase I've made. Use it all the time as it's so versatile from drilling through brick to screwing in the smallest screw. Never seen the price drop that low again and now replaced by the next model up at bunnings http://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-18v-2-x-4-0ah-xr-li-ion-br…

If it does drop in price again or see it cheap elsewhere I highly recommend it over these combo kits.

      • I do indeed and having a powerpass card made it come down to $159…

Great tool/price combo. Tough as etc.

        • Looks like more than the standard 5% discount with powerpass card?

I'm looking for a really good battery drill. After a couple of "cheapie" power drills I bought myself a DeWalt one. That was nearly 30 years ago and it's sill going strong :)

If this battery drill set comes up on special I'll be on it like a fat kid on donuts !!!!

    • able to explain the difference between the different types of drills? Got gifted a "makita" 2 piece cordless drill set (also on bunnings website) by the gf for my birthday. It's a hammer drill and impact drill - what exactly does one use these for as opposed o the 'drill' described in the OP post??

Is it the method of drilling that each brings? I've since received a makita drill head set from the missus but being my first drill set was abit confused what everything was for…

I'd thought of tools as i was building a house and wanted to DIY venetians blinds or other blinds - so obviously need to start learning how to use a drill… hah :)

      • +1

Hammer drill applies hammer action into the drill bit. Like hammering a nail. It's good for masonry. You need special hammer drill bits.

Impact driver applies tapping action around the rotation. It's good for loosening stuck bolts and nuts, or for tightening lags, or for driving screws into wood. You need special impact driver bits.

Normal drill is for drilling holes in wood or metal. Don't use a hammer drill or impact driver for drilling holes in wood or metal. Your hammer drill maybe has a hammer-off switch and can be either hammer drill or normal drill.

      • Really, you just need to ask both your missus and your girlfriend to sit down and talk about what to give you the next time, otherwise you're going to have problems like this cropping up!

      • 2 piece set will be a drill and driver, not 2 drills. One will have a keyless chuck and the other has 1/4 inch collet for all your driver bits. The driver is also called an "impact driver". Technically speaking the drill should be called hammer drill but which cordless drill doesn't have the hammer feature for drilling into masonry these days ?

        • Plenty. Drill drivers are better for carpentry work. This DeWalt kit's drill does not have the hammer function so therefore masonry work is not really on the cards.

in pic it looks like MnM cartoon is holding 2 guns (drills).

  • Bought some de walt similar to this from bunnings but in the hard kit a couple of months ago. These drills are amazing. Definitely worth the investment above ryobi and ozito brands if you are renovating.

My impact driver drilled 250mm 16 gauge screws through my retaining wall sleeper stairs without breaking a sweat. Highly recommend this product if you are a DIYer.

Battery charges in under an hour, mine are 2mah ones not 1.3 though.

They offering discounted bunnings gift card.thanks

The 1.3Ah batteries are pretty crap though. Rest of the kit is ok.

  • i think these have come on special to 199 a few times.
otherwise 229 is the normal price at bunnings.

    good drill so far.
very compact impact driver.. just 140mm from nose to butt.

  • Bought this stanley fatmax kit from masters with 10% off coupon and 7.5%off egiftcard. The original price is 239 and this is porter cable re-brand for middle level users https://www.masters.com.au/product/101323141/stanley-fatmax-…. This dewalt one is entry level.

  • Black and Decker in another frock…

    • +1

      Well said. LOL

    • Like Jaguar cars are Tata motor cars "in another frock" or Lexus cars are Camrys or Porsche cars are Volkswagon Beetles tarted up with fresh lipstick :D :D ???

    • Dewalt = Black and Decker? I thought Dewalt was premium stuff?

      • Arrrrrrr, the power of marketing :-)
