  • Would this be too big for em10 body? Front heavy?

    • +2

slightly, but it's worth it, it's a great lens.

    • I had it on an em10. not so bad, I used to hold the lens a bit for support.
It is a very good lens, can do it all in any condition.

    • You should get the grip for the E-M10 if you're pairing it with this lens.

    • i use this 99% of the time on my em5. Handles fine.

    • I use it on EM10 all the time no problem.

  • what about E-M5, is this all I need?

    • Yep, I'd also buy a custom grip from Amazon though, as this thing is a bit heavy.

  • +2

You might want to mention that this is for Micro Four-Third cameras.

  • Great price! I scored one yesterday from GG with an E-M1 and 45mm lens‎ for $1399.

    Handy hints for this lens:
    1. Slide the focus ring to the front for auto-focus and to the back (visible distance marking) for manual focus.
    2. The short minimum focusing distance makes this lens almost macro like. Get closer!
    3. The filter thread is 62mm, in case you wanna order a clear protector filter. I personally use B&W, but these are the same if not better: http://mainlinephoto.com.au/62mm-heliopan-protection-sh-pmc-…

    • Cheers for the heads-up on the Heliopan. The B&Ws seem a lot more expensive, and (for me) a UV filer isn't necessary.

Geriatric Gerry Harvey's changed his surname I see…

    • +1

No it's completely separate, no relation whatsoever.

      • I sure hope not…

    • LOL may be your geriatric dementia is affecting your memory on people's name.

  • Great price! In fact it's a really good price. I use this with my em5 mark 2, happy to answer any questions!

    • I already own a 25mm 1.8 lens. Would getting this still be worth it?

      • +2

I have the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 and I find myself using this thr most. The ability to zoom while maintaining aperture is what makes this a must have. The picture quality is awesome across all focal lenghts

      • Well one is a fast prime, the other is a bright standard zoom. Neither replaces the other. If you dont know the difference, you probably dont need it.

I have (or had) the 25mm 1.8 lens and it was a good lens. The only reason you would ever get this over that is for one or both of the following reasons:

        1) You want to zoom, 12-40mm covers the standard range of a zoom. Versatility.
        2) You want to weatherproof your camera, this lens is weatherproof (but not waterproof).

Be aware that this lens is massive compared to the 25mm f1.8.

  • Good price, hope they do a promotion for the Panasonic 12-35mm

Hey guys, is this better value for money than the 12mm F/2.0 at their price of $650? Seems on the surface a greater range without sacrificing any meaningful aperture. Please weigh in!

    • They are both good prices. Depends entirely on your needs.

    • The difference of F2 and F2.8 is one full stop.
This 12-40 is weather proof and is constant aperture.
I don't have 12/2, but my 12-40/2.8 is pretty much glued to my EM-1 all the time.
      Good for landscape and portrait.

    • The 12-40 would be much more versatile but a lot heavier. If you need low light performance maybe go for another of their primes with an even faster aperture eg: 17mm 1.8, 25th 1.8…. unless of course you need the width of the 12mm for your specific needs.

    • If you specifically require a 1 stop faster aperture at 12mm or want a compact prime lens, get the 12 2.0.
If you don't need that extra 1 stop of light and don't mind the bigger & heavier lens, get the 12-40 2.8.
Both feels expensive in hand. Image quality wise, both are about the same @ 12mm regardless of aperture.

      • 12mm on the m4/3 is pretty wide, so if you're looking for a walkaround lens the 12-40 would probably be a better choice.
Extra 1 stop at 12mm is less useful than at longer focal lengths.

TLDR: Need compact/shoot wide all the time? Get 12 f/2. Otherwise get 12-40.

  • ANyone seen any deals on the 9mm f8 body cap lens?

    • I've never seen it under $100AUD landed.

      • +1

Seen it around that recently? Having trouble trying to get it under $140

        • +1

CameraPro currently have it for $99

        • @jbuttnz:

          Thanks for that, ordered!
Was $17 to deliver but still well cheaper than anywhere else i had found.

  • Thanks for the opinions guys, I did have a look at a few reviews last night and I need a lens for travel photography since I am going overseas soon, so landscape and portrait would both be needed. It seems the versatility and convenience means I should really consider this lens seriously, especially as I don't want to be carrying more expensive gear (several primes) in case they get stolen/damaged. I do already own a 25mm F/1.8 for portraits if I do need the low light. Landscapes I guess would probably be shot during the day where more light would be available anyway. I did buy the 12mm F/2 recently as I wanted a wide lens but I might need to sell it and redivert the funds to something more suitable..

      Just my opinion.

Just came back from 2 months in Europe and took the whole range of lenses in this focal length (and above) with me. I used my fisheye (would have used the 12mm if I owned one) and my 17mm pretty much the whole time. My 60mm came out a few times, as did my 45mm, otherwise they all stayed in the bag. Rarely (if at all) did I use my 25mm.

The whole 17 vs. 25 (35/50) debate. If 25mm is your focal length, I'd get the 12mm and never look back. 17mm is a lot closer but still a noticeable difference to the 12 (an would still recommend the 12). Cropping on these lenses will be miles ahead of the 12-40 (yes I had this lens and sold it to go for all the primes). I just couldn't live with the weight of it and it dulled my experience of what I wanted to be my "smaller" system.

12-40 is good, but cannot compare to the primes (IMO). I thought I would have used the longer lenses once overseas, but I regret taking them! If I was staying with this system, I would have owned a 12mm by now.

TLDR - 12-40 versatile but heavy especially if staying at the wider end most of the time. Primes, will be the sharper/lighter package.

      YMMV - Good luck.
