Bit of a fad yes, and not really necessary to get 2.5kg - I'd stick to the 1kg version for $12 -It'll keep the kids entertained for aaaages.
Add some figurines, sand castle builing toys and bang!! More time for you to go on OzBargain while they are entertained!
Id suggest also storing the sand in a kitty litter tray and using this as the 'play area'. You wont lose much sand this way and it will keep clean and maintain it's kinetic properties!

Do you get regular discount for being a VIP or just on your birthday?
It is $10 for 970g at Kmart as a regular price, don't know if it is any different
