[Melb & Geelong] $199 12 Month Gym Membership - Derrimut 24: 7 Gym

570

Thought I would actually get an account on ozbargain to submit this deal as I think it's worth it and timely before New Year resolutions get into a frenzy panic.

$199 for a full unlimited 12 month 24 hour staffed gym membership that covers 8 centers around the Melbourne and Geelong area. They have various classes and some very good equipment (several squat racks, benches, pulley machines, dozens of crossfit trainers, treadmills etc) but I need to stress the downside is that most people get overly frustrated of the lack of etiquette in returning weights to their proper section etc. If you don't mind lifting, running or generally getting a sweat next to some meat heads I recommend it. Expires midnight on the 18th of December, 2015.

Just for reference this deal was made at the same price back in 2012 when it only had 2 locations https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84113

NB: This deal isn't reflective on their website, thus the Facebook page link

Is there something around this price in Sydney?

    • They are continually expanding but I wouldn't know if there's movement for interstate. I wouldn't put it passed them though…

      • They are continually expanding

Their name doesn't now make a lot of sense…

  • Lol what a coincidence. Just walked into the Derrimut stadium where I saw this advertised. Didn't even think once for once second to post it….or join up hah

  • +2

Wish there's one in eastern side, SO FAR AWAY :(

  • -2

    How much is it normally?

    • +2

$399 or they have direct debit options which are generally more expensive

    • +1

$399 is the standard price. sometimes they do a $299 special which seems like a desperate cash grab and now they are doin a $199 deal makes alarm bells go off in my head. All this means is the gyms are going to be swarming with cheap members…

      • +3

yeah don't go during peak hours 4pm-10pm.. sardines

      • +4

makes alarm bells go off in my head. All this means is the gyms are going to be swarming with cheap members…

Who cares, the posers flake out after feb/march. Don't know what you mean by alarm bells, the closest derrimut to me just upgraded all their equipment, and the caroline springs one is the biggest gym ive ever seen. 3 huge warehouse size sections.

        • +2

From a business perspective (I used to run a gym), slashing your prices by half price is a drastic and alarming move. Yes they have done some big expansions but the situation reads as though they have invested and grown too fast, too soon as desperately need money for cash flow. It just wrecks the brand. When you continuously do cheap pries, you condition people to expect that and never pay full price. This results in needing more sales to make the same amount of money and you're left with an overrun and under-serviced gym.

As I said, I've trained at a few Derrimuts. The equipment is fantastic but the cleanliness and general care of the place is a massive turn off.

        • @Jules_d1:

Perhaps they're trying to reach customers who won't turn up very often and oversell their gyms. It works in The States…

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: Yea thats pretty much how all gym work. Gyms would really struggle if ALL members came 3x a week.

        • +1

          @Jules_d1:

OzBargainers take note, when negotiating a gym contract and asked, "So how often would you like to come in for a workout?"

The correct response is, "Uummm, maybe once every few months, or so…" Wear your Saturday worst and act like a slob. :)

        • +1

@Jules_d1: I'd like to counter your view. What you've said is correct in some ways but wrecking the brand? I disagree. The only thing a strategy like this does is a) Increase sign ups (which gives you more people in your store to push other items i.e protein, gym wear, PT sessions, loyalty) and b) puts stress on your facilities (which if managed properly can be a good thing for business).

Hopefully the owners recognise the need for improvement in a few key areas (cleanliness, behaviour of members) and I'm sure they will. Reading their webpage they have some lofty goals (i.e 300 gyms by 2030) and from past experience I've noticed they like to spend money and are always aggressively expanding.

Hell, they even had Danny Green and Arnie do a guest appearance!

The best thing for savvy users of gyms is that we are the recipients of this price deflation. We benefit from gyms reducing their prices. This price drop may over time have a snowball effect. High priced gyms will now have to reduce their fees or significantly improve their offerings (equipment/facilities) to meet the price they charge.

tl dr - Think of the positives; this is a great deal.

        • @rawm: Yep they seem to like to spend money, thats probably why they need to sales like this to keep themselves above water.

Price deflation is NOT a good thing. Short term is good for consumers but when prices keep getting driven down something has to give. Gyms will get overcrowded or close down.

As for the cleanliness. This is what to expect. I used to be a member but just couldnt handle it anymore. As a female I dont want to be walking around trying to find stuff when its outs of place.

        • @Jules_d1: I'd have to say this IMO is not overly crazy price deflation; it's a super special, but still $200 so although a little out of the ordinary it doesn't make me think they are going under.

I remember a friend of mine signed up to Derrimut when it first opened for approx $150 for a grand opening special around 2011 - not too long ago - and as others have said, this is targeting the client who they expect is in need of a new years' resolution and wont be actually attending come winter.

          Your links didn't work :(

Stuff out of place is what I was mentioning with member behaviour and it does need to be addressed, but I'm not overly fussed to be honest.

        • +1

@Jules_d1: seriously.. If you want weights nicely tucked away and the gym looking all pretty then go to a health club, where they charge you a fortune per month. THIS IS OZBARGAIN, for 199 this is a steal, if you want to go train and workout at any time of the day.

        • @Jules_d1: > slashing your prices by half price is a drastic and alarming move.

Ive literally been waiting since start of the year when i missed out on the $300 sign up last year, for this years christmas promotion so this one weak deal is hardly brand wrecking or desperate, and its hardly frequent.

      • +2

To be fair.. specials this time of year mainly target those who have just put on their summer wear and then seen a reflection, or planning for a "new year, new me" resolution. Attendance will fall away sharply come the end of January. There's a reason why most gyms have membership numbers that are many many times the actual physical maximum of the venue.

      • seconded, don't go past 4pm.
you will not have any equipment to use regardless of the size of the gym.

        • If you're personable enough (and/or big enough) gymgoers will offer to let you work-in when you approach in my experience.

      • It really ain't new comers that pounce on these deals @ Derrimut.. There aren't that many motivated people that are dying to join the gym. Around this time of the year & NY they have been doing the $199 deals. Old timers know this and its about the same time membership renewals are due. And for the regular casual $5 users who have already spent at least 20 sessions (20 x $5 = $100) then its an opportunity to save a little.

I paid when it was $299. Other mates $399. So long you make good use of it for your own health benefit its a plus plus compare it to those other gym that charge an arm and a leg ($500+/yr). One thing great about Derrimut.. you have various selection of classes you can attend. Yoga, Dance Workout, COmbat, Boxing.. etc etc.

For the general people that just wanna get fit, plenty of cardio machines to go around. Even during peak times.
Its the weights sections that gets hammered during peak hours. Then its kinda like peak hour in the city. In saying that, peak hour aint 4-10pm for all Derrimut Gym. I have no issues @ CS finding the machines I need when I rock up @8pm. And now that the new Braybrook one opened.. some will probably drive the extra mile. Heard they have brand new equipment and its a pretty huge joint. Dont get me wrong I've been to the original Braybrook one - its tiny, equipment are battered and worst of all it really stinks (especially the toilets).

    • It's a good deal jv, go dig another hole and sit in it until you can try and trash someone elses post.

        • You have no interest in most of the items you comment on. People who know anything about the gym know how cheap this is. Get a life.

        • -4

          @Marto:

You have no interest in most of the items you comment on

          Prove it.

People who know anything about the gym know how cheap this is.

Where did I say it wasn't cheap ???

  • +5

Too bad their gyms are a complete and utter mess. These cheap prices (never seen them go so low, comes across as a desperate cash grab) tend to attract the cheap clients who dont value the facilites (which would be amazing if they were actually respected.

I went in to their caroline springs venue and it was a mess. half the dumbells not even on the rack, weights all over the place. I spent more time trying to find the weights than actually training. Theres all the signs up about putting weights away or you'll get banned but nothing gets enforced.

nice equipment but just poorly manages :/

    • +1

totally agree , the place smells too, one staff guy wasnt very friendly when i joined up yesterday, told me to just fill in the papers glared at me not even a hello or anything i felt like a criminal and when the process was done he just nodded his head.. i didnt know what was going on, big place but everything is all over the place.

      • +1

It's sad but true. You do sacrifice customer service and several other things for the price. I am pretty focused on what I want and need so I'm not too overly fussed about how other people treat the equipment or the demeanor of the staff but completely understand how it makes people feel unwelcome and generally turned off from going.

      • +1

customer service is decent at the Thomastown one

    • +3

Finding dumbbells are like finding a matching pair of socks in the wash.

      • Are you saying they have 20 pairs of identical dumbbells?

        o_0

    • Agreed. The place is all huff and puff. They employ local kids and pay them nothing, therefore they just hang around thinking they're cool and do nothing. Then there's the overly loud, annoying doof doof music. Some of the trainers are good, most are not.

The toilets at the Newcomb gym are often disgraceful and left unclean for days. The staff have their own toilets so don't care.

The change rooms consist of a bench next to the toilets. That's it.

Good equipment, the rest is no frills, to the point of breaking health regulations.

Plenty of low IQ roid heads too.

      • +2

Some people actually go to the gym to train. Go figure.

        • +1

agreed with thedude23, go in train and leave (maybe pickup a few DB left lying around by others,BIG deal!)

    • Ive literally never not found a piece of equipment i was after at CS.

      • Do they have a pullover machine?

  • +1

Wish there was something similar in Brisbane. This seems like an extremely good price!

  • -2

Excuse my ignorance, but is $200 really a bargain for a gym membership? My old gym was $15/month.

    • +3

Sure you don't mean a week? Otherwise please post details!

      • +3

Direct Debit options $14.50 per person per week debited every Thursday.

        Well, ain't this a plot twist? I did mean a week… I'm going this way… bye…

  • Be careful with buying long term memberships. If the business folds you lose your money.

    • Can't see it happening, seems like they're thriving. This deal begs to differ though, so who knows.

  • +1

Checks out at just under $17 per month. For reference, most gyms offer memberships at a rate of roughly $60+ per month, sometimes even $100.

Of course the downside is that you're locked into a year - and they probably know most people will probably give up quickly.

  • +1

One of the few decent lifting gyms around with good heavy weights and overall decent machines. Great price but way to overcrowded especially after this offer came out.

    • How heavy are the heaviest dumbbells?

      • Not that I go up that high, but I believe I've seen 50kg. But don't know the top range.

      • 120lb each. Nobody can pick them up.

        • I bet you a return flight to Melbourne from Sydney that I can…

        • We used to do 2x60kg(130lb) dumbbell press.. I believe Derrimut carries in excess of 80kg dumbbells

        • @knackers:

Sssshhhh! I'm about to score a free flight…

        • @Scrooge McDuck: my bad, I meant 120kg actually.

      • its actually 90kg (190lb), I use it for sumo squats

    • I head there in the morning (Thomastown) and even though there are lot of people there after 6am, the sheer quantity of equipment still makes the place feel quiet.

      Never been there after 5.

  • Welcome to OzBargain OP, great first post! :D

Are there any photos of the gym facilities available?

  • +4

Great deal, thanks for sharing OP!!

The best thing about this deal is obviously the price is very low, but it will also force other gyms in the areas Derrimut operates in to follow suit which is a win win.

The average annual membership in my area (exc. fitness first and other similar chains) is $400-$450 for 12mth membership. I've trained in the Airport West gym and yes, it's not perfect but all this talk about it being unclean etc is not really accurate at all.

What do you expect? Hospital grade cleanliness? Go to a chain gym and pay $1000 per year.

Seriously, it's not an issue, especially for $199

They offer classes, and the equipment selections are A+.

It's no fitness first, gentrified and pretentious place but if you just keep to yourself, try not to go at a crazy time (between 5.30-7.30pm) you'll be fine!

+1. Best gym ive used apart from melbourne city baths, just dont expect Fernwood.
If you want an example of a bad/dirty gym just go to any Doherty's, which last time I checked is still double the price of Derrimut.

  • Great price, I've been meaning to sign up to a gym since I've moved to the western suburbs. Perfect timing and the new gym in Braybrook is quite nice.
