Free Uncapped Telstra Air Wi-Fi until Sep 2016 (Telstra Customers)

2360

Just read that Telstra are giving unlimited data to their Air wifi until June 30 Sep 30 2016 for Telstra customers!!

Awesome!!!!

From News.com.au article:

Telstra launched the Telstra Air Network in June but there were several catches to using it. You had to be a Telstra broadband customers, you could only log on for 30 minutes at a time and the data you used was counted against your home data limit.

From today, when Telstra customers log on to the network, they will not have any data caps or time limitations and any data they use will not affect their other accounts.

For non Telstra customers, see realfancyman's forum post on how to obtain the deal via a $2 sim card.

Update 21/4: Deal has been extended from June 30 2016 to Sep 30 2016 (thanks creeps_bay).

It's easier when you've already got a pathway in.

        • @syousef: If your determined you'll find a pathway.

        • +1

          @malouphix:

You're not trying to block someone determined. If you're trying to block NSW just forget about it. If you're trying to block the identity thief that'll move on to the next soft target, that's achievable.

        • @syousef:

LOL meant to type NSF and mistyped NSW instead.

        • +3

@syousef: I read it as NSFW

        • @syousef:

Nah, blocking NSW is fine ;)

    • Why do you want them to stop pushing it if it's a good deal for other people?

I just switched to Bigpond Cable last week and this sounds like an excellent deal. I just found out throught that page that Telstra Air offers fixed broadband users free access to other participating Fon hotspots around the world.

Heaps convenient when travelling to countries where it is somewhat widespread.

      • Because I think it's not a good deal. It's a trap!

    • Does Telstra offer any form of security gaurantee against hackers/malicious usage, or at least indemnity for the host (modem owner) if sued or authorities approach?

  • Activated. Thanks OP.

  • +5

Look like Telstra Prepaid is included in this deal .

Check the link again with my mates Telstra prepaid internet connection .
    https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/telstra-air-free-wi…

Create a Telstra ID during the process or set up a new one . It now have been activated .

Will find a Telstra Air Hotspot late to test .

    • Yes it certainly is, I just registered my handset.

      • +1

So happy about this offer from Telstra , i got Telstra mobile for work which i very happy with Telstra Mobile Internet Speed but have a TPG Connection at home . Been thinking about switching to Telstra Broadband for a few months now to take advantage of the Air Network . I guess i have 6 months trial now to make my decision if i need the Air or not .

      • +2

Yep, just registered my Telstra prepaid too.

        • +1

          I have a telstra ID
Use it for my prepaid account to check my balance using Telstra 24/7 app on on telstra website.

If I use the activate with your id nothing happens, my credential are correct but the page reloads to the same page.

Do I need to register for telstra ID even though I already have an ID?

        • @SlipKnot:
I have the same issue, explained here:
          https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Telstra-Air/Unable-to…

I actually registered with my wife's Telstra ID on my handset (my service is not on her account), although I've not yet checked if I can actually connect to Air as a guest with her account using my handset.

  • +1

Looks like you need to use the standard Telstra modems for it to work. Can anyone confirm?

    • If you want to share air, yes. However, you don't need to use the Telstra modem as your primary modem/router/access point. Just plug ethernet from your normal router to the WAN port on the telstra modem. I'm doing this, lets me keep the Telstra air network segregated from the rest of my home network and use the modem/router I want.

      • +2

then put the telstra router in a faraday cage so you can continue to have access to air hotspots, but no one has access to yours :-)

  • I'm on telstra prepaid only and was able to sign up.

downloaded the app. will give it a test next time am out n about. think there's a phone booth a few blocks from my house.

not really sure how much use it would be. could be handy on NYE if you can get a signal.

    free is free :)

    • Yes handy for NYE and the whole holiday period, especially regional holiday destinations where 850MHz 3G gets smashed after 8am.

  • +1

So I can sign up on one telstra device the login with my other (non telstra/no sim) devices?

    • +1

Yep! Just use the Telstra login to connect to the wireless network irrespective of the device. So if your neighbors have an Air hotspot available you could connect your laptop etc to it too.

  • +1

I can't activate my Telstra ID. After entering valid username and password, the screen refreshes looping back to the auth page.
Attempt was made from Chrome and HTC Internet browsers on Android HTC One (M7). Also tried tethering from Windows 8 workstation.
Entering incorrect credentials gives invalid password error, so credentials are OK.
My Telstra ID has one home broadband cable service and two prepaid mobile services. I had previously used Air when it was free (initial release trial) so perhaps I'm already a member.
Must be an issue with my account as it worked fine for the wife using the same equipment (in fact, I used her account when activating on my mobile service connection).
    Livechat time!

Just be aware that the Telstra Air boxes use Meraki by Cisco AP's in them. This means they track all of the session data as well as a huge amount of information regarding location of devices. They're also able to track as you move between different AP's around town. I highly recommend using a VPN client of some kind. If you want more info on these AP's, just ask - I sell them.

    • I like how traffic signal boxes have little antenna's on top of them so that they can aggregate Bluetooth and/or WiFi identifiers to track vehicle movement. This is how google traffic shows flows.

      • Really? got a source because that sounds interesting as hell and I have nothing to do while Dell representatives install my new firewall.

        • @fatty:

Local governments yeah, but not Google. Google collect data from any phone that has "Location Services" enabled resulting in crowd sourced traffic data collection with amazing accuracy.

Too bad it takes roughly 20 minutes for the data to run through Google's processing and algorithms and therefore isn't very useful at determining live traffic data.

        • @fatty:

"There is also no opt-in option. A council spokesman said the only way a device can escape being tracked was if users disabled its Bluetooth functionality. Many motorists use Bluetooth to connect their phones to hands-free systems while in the car."
          http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/government-it/council-traffic-a…

It's like the vast majority of users haven't even considered the broadcast nature of wireless communications.

      • I like how traffic signal boxes have little antenna's on top of them so that they can aggregate Bluetooth and/or WiFi identifiers to track vehicle movement. This is how google traffic shows flows.

Bollocks, Google traffic uses as it's primary source the location information of devices running google maps and those that are reporting their location. It can also use data from traffic systems like the sensors in the roads in Australia but in Australia this data is both of limited value and is not easily accessible.

Your suggestion is utterly absurd and just a modern equivalent of an old wives tale.

        • Your suggestion is utterly absurd and just a modern equivalent of an old wives tale.

He actually backed up his comment with a link to an article. Yes his comment about google running off it was invalid. But he wasn't totally wrong either.

        • Apologies, in this country there is no evidence of Google using 3rd party data sources for real-time traffic detection.
The suggestion was that devices are being tracked as you move through different AP's around town (as example: Council, Telstra Air or Westfield) tracking already occurs with other technologies.
Tracking of movement allows for services such as Google Traffic, so there are some benefits, but probably not as beneficial as the potential for Air to offload mobile service congestion.

        • Really?

EDIT: Seems like RMS' live traffic for NSW also comes from Google Maps. But Apple Maps seems to get their primary data from RMS. Which comes from Google Maps. Huh.

I've always wondered how that worked. The more you know.

      • +1

Not sure why you got negged for that, yeah it's slightly off topic but that's interesting. I did not know that. + vote for me.

    • +1

I think you are tracked as long as your mobile device is connected to the mobile network?

unless you turn your device off(but it looks like there is a technology now that can track you even your mobile is off)?

      • +1

The point is the tracking software that they usually use will pinpoint your location. Meraki AP's can plug into software like PurpleWiFi to give advertising analytics. Westfield, Chadstone and Etihad stadium all use this type of software to provide analytics on where customers are. Shopping centers can track which doors are used most, where customers spend their time to better deliver advertising. Sports stadiums like Etihad use this sort of software to see how many people are seated where and how many people go to which bar etc.

Telstra can use this to the same extent: better deliver advertising, show where the majority of people using these are, how long they stay for, who connects vs who simply passes by ect.

      • +1

You need to wrap your phone in foil or other radio blocking material if you want to be certain of not being tracked.

        • -1

Donning a burqa could help too…

    • If you're using your Telstra account you need to login to the Air network so they know where you are anyways…VPN or not.

  • Thanks OP! I am a Telstra postpaid mobile user and successfully activated my Telstra Air free service.

  • good to see this move to mobile as well.
The whole point is to free up data of the primary cell networks.

  • great thanks, activated

    Works ! YAY Telstra!

  • Will this work with the Telstra 4G modem?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/222408

    • If you mean, is the SIM card included with the modem eligible for Telstra Air, then yes.

  • Yeah! My sister has this, good times to come.

  • I've registered successfully but I can't connect to the Telstra Air network near work. I'll try a different one. I think it's a problem with this AP, no log in screen is displayed.

  • Telstra mobile customers? Yes !

  • I have a telstra ID
Use it for my prepaid account to check my balance using Telstra 24/7 app on on telstra website.

If I use the activate with your id nothing happens, my credential are correct but the page reloads to the same page.

Do I need to register for telstra ID even though I already have an ID?''

tried it on Mobile iOS safari and chrome,

on PC using hotspot iOS chrome and IE same results.

  • Took 3 months for Telstra to get my Air activation working and that's only resolved when I threatened the ombudsman on them. Now that it is activated, there is no Air connection around my area at all even though the "Air" phone booth is about 70 meters away from me.

  • I just connected on an iPhone. took a bit as when it took me to the webpage it wouldn't accept my login details, even though i could go to telstras main webpage and login in with same details. Downloaded the app ,logged in on that then i had to log in on the web page too otherwise it wouldn't let me connect. Done that, done a speediest and got a ping of 44, 4.53 Mbps down, 0.32Mbps up on Telstras network from launceston, Tas to Melbourne.

    • Downloaded the app ,logged in on that then i had to log in on the web page too otherwise it wouldn't let me connect.

Which app? Telstra Air, Telstra 24/7 can you please elaborate the steps.
      Cheers

      • I downloaded the Air wifi app. logged on with telstra ID on app. Made sure wifi on app said it was connected. I went through the link posted above with the checking its available to me logged in with telstra id on that and it worked.

  • Is there anything stopping me from connecting to my own modem's Air Hotspot and using unlimited internet for 6 months?

    • Doesn't seem to be, but it will be speed limited.

    • +1

The speed on air is capped.

    • Yeah I did this this morning. Probably not capped it hard to be sure…

    Why was OP reading news.com.au?

    • I wish I was fruit ninja then I would chop your comment.

news.com.au publishes media for the masses, whether you like it or not you are part of the 'masses', we all are, whether we think we are or not.

  • Ok I figured heres what needs to be done for who are having issues.

I have a user telstra ID only
however I have a gmail email id in preferences/contact detail in Telstra account

Click register for telstra ID even though you have an ID
Use you email, the same which you have in you telstra account details OR put in a new one.
This will be then your email under contact pref.

Dont use same password as your Telstra account, create a new one.

It should then go through. Once you have had that, you can log in to the Telstra Air app using
    1) your new details or 2) your user id and old password. Worked with both details for me.

Also people like me with user id only remember our userid is also [email protected] email address.

    • Nice find, I'll give that a go.

      • No dice for me @slipknot.

I was hoping your instructional which effectively changes my Telstra ID would work.

I had a Telstra ID of xxxxxxx with [email protected] in the contact preferences.
Did as you outlined, created "new" Telstra ID using my [email protected] address, different password, it matched the existing one and I can log into my account with my [email protected] address.
However, now when attempting to Activate with my [email protected] address, I'm told it looks like I have already registered!

I think the difference here is my Telstra ID was associated with email address "[email protected]", whereas yours was simply "user", and I had previously (earlier this year) attempted to activate under the free initial release trial.

        • Yeah could be the reason you already have your email associated with bigpond.
Also remember all this needs to be done on mobile device. Once account is created on the web page.

Use those details I'm Telstra air app.

          Try either userids in app.

        • @SlipKnot:
None of that worked. Earlier today used a different Telstra ID of another mobile service (on my mobile) which probably broke it further.

        • @fatty:

I was hoping your instructional which effectively changes my Telstra ID would work.

I still have the same userid i just used the existing email (gmail) which was and still is in the account pref's

I have another account for my partner will try that and report.

  • I'd be in it but I'd have to buy one of THEIR routers.

    • No you just need a Telstra ID, which you can get by getting a Prepaid SIM.

  • Just signed in with my mobile prepay account, didn't have any issues

  • -4

The title should say Telstra Broadband customers. I am a Telstra customer but only for my phone.

    wow

data you used was counted against your home data limit.

So it's not free or uncapped either.

    Very misleading title.

    • As an Air Member, Air usage is accumulated towards your Home Broadband service.
As an Air Guest (which is the "free" offer that commenced today), usage does not accumulate towards a Telstra service.

So it depends on the type of pass you have: member or guest.

      http://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/consumer…

    • Sage you should read the details a bit better

Includes mobile and the data does not count towards your data limit (not that you have a data limit anyway)

      Very misunderstood individual

  • +1

Awesome if you have a phone box in range of your house

  • I recently got Telstra cable at home and got air membership bit don't see the Telstra air hotspot from my router on gateway max.

Not sure how to take advantage of this.

I supposedly its only good when you are close to phone booths and you need a Telstra account eg. Telstra 7x24 app account

  • Trying to connect to a hotspot about 30m across the road. Phone keeps trying and trying and nothing happens. Not successful nor unsuccessful.

    • Check whether Telstra Air has been activated on your home broadband service
Check your activation status in My Account or through the Telstra 24x7 App.

In My Account, go to the Internet section and scroll to Telstra Air. Your status will be listed as either active or inactive.

In Telstra 24x7, go to the main menu and select Telstra Air. This will display a page showing your Telstra Air details from My Account, including your activation status. If Telstra Air does not appear in the main menu, you may not be eligible for the service and should contact Telstra for further assistance.

If your browser doesn’t automatically open the login page when you first connect to the Telstra Air Network make sure your device is connected to the Telstra Air Wi-Fi network
      Open an internet browser
Your internet browser will load up the login page
Enter your Telstra ID username and password on the login page to start accessing Telstra Air.

      Good luck. :)

      • I'm not sure if that applies to Guest User (that's the "free" pass for mobile service). Sounds like it's what a member user would expect.

      • Not even up to that stage. the phone can't make a connection to the hotspot, way before any login page comes up

    • Tried another hotspot this one in a Telstra Shop and it works. Woo!

  • Argh I don't know if I like this. Telstra are already in such a powerful position after being government built and then sold off without structural separation. Now they, and only they, can take advantage of the vast network of public telephone boxes that we also paid to build and use it to offer a level of service other companies simply can't compete with. It makes me uneasy.

    • +2

They must be kicking themselves after removing so many telephone boxes over the years now.

  • Are the other ISPs likely to offer a similar thing?

  • Thanks for this deal. I just tested it and got 10M down and 0.78 up
    http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1616958847

the Air app didn't detected that I was near a hotspot and I had to manually connect via WIFI menu.

    • i got similar speedtest result , i think it capped it at 10M .

  • I actually got confused after reading all the different instructions =.

I have a Telstra account with 2 prepaid services but I am not using any one of them in my phone. When I tried to log into Telstra Air with this account it says that I don't have Telstra Air activated. Does that mean I am not eligible?

    • You do need to activate with your Telstra ID before connecting. Activation requires a SIM in the device, although on whirlpool there was a report the service can be expired. I think the system just looks for a service in your Telstra ID and the device you activate from needs to have a matching service SIM. Not very well documented.

      • Thanks dude, I guess I will just have to dig out my old sim and activate my account.

        • Not sure if you can do that as in order to associate a mobile service to Telstra ID the service needs receive confirmation SMS and Air association needs an active mobile service.

Pop into Coles from tomorrow for a $30 starter SIM, activate it and associate with your Telstra ID, then activate Air against it.

        • @fatty: No need to spend $5 on $30 starter. Just get a $2 SIM. Works fine. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225574

  • I registered on my phone (prepaid SIM) via the Telstra web site no problem.
Now do I need to install the Telstra Air app to be able to use the phone booth wifi hotspots?

    • +1

The app is optional, you should see the AP and be able to auth.

  • That's pretty good. Thanks, OP.

  • I don't recommend the telstra air app as I just realized my tablet down to 5%. Was 90% this morning before I tucked it away.. Looks like a battery drainer. Pls report back if same issue.

    • Hi Earthman, I can confirm that it prevented my phone from going into 'deep sleep' during periods of inactivity. The result was a much higher battery drain than normal. You don't need the app to connect so I just removed it.

      • Thanks I thought so too. You are right we don't need to use it to connect.

  • There seems (to me at least) to be contradicting info in this thread. Some are saying you need to have Telstra broadband, others seem to be saying you only need a mobile starter pack but actually pay nothing/don't need to 'charge' the SIM with credit.

Can someone please summarise WHO exactly can get this - and WHAT they need to have/do to do so?
