    Good price of p8.

Whenever these decent phone deals appear I have just convinced myself to hold onto my note for just a little longer.

    • is that note 3? if yes, same here

      • Would you recommend the Note 5? I've got the HTC M8 and looking to change mid next year.

        • no it doesnt have sdcard support.

        • @eisniwre: Thanks!

        • +1

@alwayslooking: better get note 4 second hand good condition. i saw on ozb today someone trying to sell note egde for $400 that is good deal if condition is good.
always buy one generation behind to ensure you get good value of your money.

        • @eisniwre: Thanks again, I was actually looking at that while you were probably writing this :)
I have till the end of April until my contract is over, so will look then. But it's good to know. Cheers!

        • @alwayslooking: haha i was looking at the edge this morning, did 5 mins research comparison between note 3 and edge, edge screen is better resolution, but then nothing wrong with my note 3 ..

        • @eisniwre: True, but I'm scared that if that edge falls, that screen is going to look quite messy!

        • @alwayslooking: ask if it comes with copy of local invoice then should be fine. google the edge fails report and see if many cases happening. if i still have note 2 i will upgrade!

      • original note 1.

  • Is the P8 worth $50 than the R7? They both look about the same on paper, thanks

    • If you use Vodafone the P8 doesnt have LTE B5 (850MHz) which can be an issue for some

      • I am sorry this is NOT correct.
The P8 sold in Australia (outright and through Vodafone) is 850 compatible

Was working at Huawei when the p8 launched.

        • +1

I'm only going off the specs listed in the link in the OP, looks like they have used the specs for the L00 model, but if it is the L09 it should have B5

        • +2

          @Japius:
Definitely worth checking the box at pickup…

        • @scubacoles:

Yes definitely. Theres some confusion as to which model DSE is selling L09 or L00

        • +2

          @Japius:

As per comments further down it looks like this is the L00 model.
The L09 model that they also sell is Vodafone branded. L09 is single SIM by the looks.

      • +5

Just confirmed that this is L00 version. here is the picture I took from Dick smith store at Sydney City: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7008696/mp3/huaweip8.jpg

    • Huawei is pretty bad with software updates, and has a very weak xda community.
Oppo has an AOSP project going, so you will be able to have a cleaner android.
      (I own a huawei ascend mate 7)

      • the P8 is the first model to rectify this issue.
The updates are much more frequent now.

        • +2

          Still no Custom ROM's though..
So in 6 months time when Huawei shift their resources to development of the P9, you're out in the cold.

  • Will this work with all Telstra 4g bands? I cant tell which sub model it is.

    • +1

If it is the L09 model, and it should be, then it seems to cover all the Telstra bands.
Seems to have dual band wifi as well.

  • Given the price, how does the p8 compare to most flagship models?
Is it worth holding out til closer to and after Christmas where better deal may occur?

Trying to cap my budget at 400 ATM for a new phone.

    • +3

At this price it's a steal, at $500 (I believe what JB were selling for) it was very competitive with flagships although with some slight shortcomings in certain areas potentially (I say potentially because for most people they will absolutely not matter).

  • +6

    Great price!
Especially for P8 it comes with one free screen replacement from Huawei if purchased this month

  • Good price OP!
Anyone saw the price for OPPO Find 7's?

  • Great price on P8, so tempted to upgrade.

  • Does P8 work with Aldi sim?

  • +2

Is the huawei mate 7 a better phone?

    I think the p8 don't have a fingerprint sensor

    • agree

  • Great news, I may choose R7 over P8,thingkinh oppo is more dedicated and inovative in mobile phone area.

    • +1

Yeah. Although huawei is quite a big player in mobile phone now I think.

R7 also has 2 yrs warranty. p8 only 1 yr

      • And I like the ColorOS

        • +2

My girlfriend has a 7a, it's incredibly buggy. Every version something screws up. Phone since last update experiences random shutdowns when 4g is on and she said there's something wrong with her calendar but I haven't looked into that one yet.

        • +1

@crift85: thanks for the real user experience, think twice now.

        • +2

@goevencheaper: Check out other users' experiences too. I've heard horror stories about devices that I have, while I haven't had any of those problems myself. It could just be a faulty phone.

      • All mobile phones if bought in Australia are 24 months.

        • According to whom?

        • +2

Only if bought on a 24 month contract.

    • The Oppo rep on whirlpool seems very active and helpful too

    • +2

I had Oppo R7 and it was a bit disappointing, and only really a mid-range device.

I would probably go for P8.

  • +7

Just a heads up that the Oppo R7 is available on the DSE eBay store:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OPPO-Smartphone-R7-Silver-/271980…

It means you can get the additional 2.5% Cashrewards cashback from eBay purchases.

    • Even better, thanks.

    • Bought one as a replacement for my dad's 1st gen Moto G.

    • but $9.90 postage so better pick up :)

    • But you can't use DSE gift cards (10% extra at Coles)

  • How does the P8 compare to the new Moto G?

    • P8 is a $300 better than G

      • -1

just bought a Moto G 3rd Gen from the good guys for $336 with $30 back as store credit…but might just return it and get this P8 instead..

  • +4
    • So which one to buy…

  • I bought the R7 for $350 on the 20% sale…should have waited!

  • Damn…that's a good price for the P8…

I guess I'll have to wait till next February when I return to Australia to see how long the good deals hold up…

  • Two days ago I picked up a Lumia 640 XL from Allphones for $249.00. It came with a bonus selfie stick that didn't excite me, but I suppose it added to the value. It was the best deal I could find, but I remained reluctant because I know M$ was selling it for $299 a month ago.

  • +1

It's getting harder to tell myself that it's not a bargain if I don't need it…

    _<

  • R7 or stump up the extra for the P8?

    • PS. . It a better looking phone and from far it looks like a much more expensive Nexus 6P.

  • just curious, any comment on R7 vs Samsung S5, which one is better?

  • Thanks for the deal. Does the P8 support LTE Band 28 - 4Gx on Telstra?

  • +1

P8 doesn't seem to work well with Telstra 4g bands?

  • +1

From the huawei.com.au page, there are two models:

    GRA L09 supports band 28 (4GX) 700MHz LTE
    GRA_UL00 does not

    Model GRA L09:
    4G TDD LTE:B40
    4G FDD LTE:B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B17/B18/B19/B20/B25/B26/B28
    3G UMTS: 800 (B6,Japan) / 800 (B19,Japan) /850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz
    2G GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
    Support NFC

    GRA_UL00:
    4G TDD LTE: B38/B39/B40/B41 (2555MHz~2655MHz)
    4G FDD LTE: B1/B3/B4/B7
    3G UMTS: 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz(B8/B5/B4/B2/B1)
    GSM : 850/900/1800/1900MHz
    Dual SIM Support

  • Gizmodo review seems to think so too..
    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/08/huawei-p8-australian-revie…

EDIT. If it's the correct model

  • The P8 is let down by a poor GPU pairing and the dual SIM slot is shared with the microSD
    it seems.

    • The Oppo shares the second sim with the SD so its either dual sim or expandable, not both

  • +2

It's amazing you can buy a 3gb phone with amoled display from local retailer for less than $300

    • -2

where did you see less than $300 and which phone?

      • +3

Oppo R7 in this deal. Duh!

  • Oppo has NFC as per specs stated, might have a look at the store, thanks OP

  • -6

Since DSE gonna close down, getting OPPO will be foolish due to no service and support in Australia.

    • OPPO phones are also sold on the Optus network.

    • Oppo have australian support and service contracts, there's no need to go through Dick Smith except maybe in the case of a 30 day Early Failure claim.

  • Thanks OP, bought a P8.

  • +7

A lot of people are asking whether their phone will work with their current service provider. A pretty handy site for checking is www.willmyphonework.net

  • I just spoke with Huawei - they said most P8 in Australia would be single SIM, so would be the GRA L09 model(with 4GX support). But best to confirm with DSE

  • r7 vs xiaomi note 3??

  • So how does the OPPO compare with the oneplus one? I was thinking of picking one up when it comes on sale at jd.com for USD$199 tomorrow.

    • I don't have an oppo but I got my oneplus one a couple of months ago and man I can tell you it does not disappoint.

  • P8 has one of the best camera if.thats important for decision making.

  • Price is for the titan grey model only. Silver still selling for $649. Also not all stores sell the grey colour.

  • If price doesn't matter. Huawei P8 or Nexus 6?

    • +2

Nexus 6.. better go with a clean google experience.. unless you need loads of storage from a micro SD

    • It is different phones altogether, Nexus 6 is really big.

  • +4

DSE only sell the dual-sim model without all 4g bands. No band 28

Picked one up for $339 anyway. $10 off for 'mates rates' promo.

    • I cant find any stocks in Sydney CBD or Broadway or Bondi.
Any places with stocks to pick up? Also how do I get mates rates promo?

      • yea, no stock in melb CBD Either.

How to use the "mates rates"? Thanks!

      • I signed up to mates rates online and they sent an email out.
They just check expiry of your mates rates (mine is 10th december).

I checked store stock online and saw heaps in Queensland. North Lakes and Chermside have lots.

    • Yeah, the specs on the website suggest that too.
I've submitted an online request with them to verify which model it is.

    • DSE also stock the single sim version as they are a Vodafone re-seller
You just have to ask,, however the pricing is set by VHA so maybe not as cheap

  • The free screen replacement is awesome (12 months).

  • The DSE P8 is the dual sim model - GRA_UL00 (no 4GX)

  • Thanks for posting, OP. My brother's been in the market for a new android and has picked up the P8!

  • Looks like no stock in Sydney:❨

    • Yep. Only delivery option. Plus $9.90

    • You can Click&Collect on eBay if you're after the Oppo R7.
