Just got an email from the camels - listed at 40GPB, but once you remove VAT and add shipping it comes out to about $76. A new low price, and the correct region for Australia so you don't need a region free player. Amazon reckons it'll arrive in time for Christmas, too.

Warner Bros release so it doesn't matter where it's bought from it will still contain region free discs. Warner Bros is one of the few studios which don't region lock their blu-ray releases.

  • Would 1080p hd be a big improvement on look of show from dvd version? …..show is worth the money but is bluray worth the upgrade?

    • Huge improvement on screens which can do 1080p full HD. But don't forget it's not only the improved video quality there's also the uncompressed sound which DVD can not offer.

      • So they upgraded sound from 2.0 to 5.1 dts-hd?

        • Yep 5.1 dts-hd master 24-bit audio on blu-ray. Lossless HD sound.

David Simon wrote about the changes involved in the BD version, including comparison videos (which are compressed by YouTube, but still).

BD = better sound, more pixels, more bling
DVD = original size and not cut to fit the 16:9 widescreen format, but less bling

IMO, if you are making lieutenant dealer money or better, yes, get the Blu Ray.
If you are just a fiend or a low-level grinder, the DVD is fine

      • I believe the original was shot on film in 16:9, so there's no cropping for most scenes. They did crop some shots, as explained above, and I think they had to digitally erase some people, props etc there were out of shot in the 4:3 version but showing in the 16:9.

I think the main reason to buy the DVD version is that it's how the original shots were composed by the DP, and it gives it a more documentary feel. Having said that, and being a huge fan of the show, I'd still get the Blu-ray version. I just can't go back to 4:3 and standard definition.

    • Dvd is so bad now I wouldn't purchase it for $1 to give to my worst enemy. There could be 90% off sales on DVD and I wouldn't care.
