WD Elements 500GB 2.5" USB External HDD for $99 @ Orange IT (Sydney)

280

Cheapest price for a 2.5" 500GB external USB HDD since the COTD deal a couple of months back. Main page states $98 however when you click on the item, it says its $99 so not exactly sure as to which one. To compare, the cheapest I could find on staticeice for the same model was $119.

Orange IT have stores in the Sydney CBD (Clarence + George St), North Sydney, Hurstville and Auburn.

Model is: WDBAAR5000ABK-PESN

  • Does anyone know what their shipping costs are (to VIC)? The number of times I have seen IT gear online and signed up only to find out about the $25 shipping charge. I don't even bother now. Why don't these idiots realise that shipping is part of any deal and be up-front.

Also, are these the models with the native USB HDD in it, so you can't pull the HDD out and use it in a laptop?

    • I think they are normal drives, I haven't taken apart the lastest gen of elements yet, but the previous elements with the rubber bumpers were normal drives. And both the old and new elements are the same size. (The usb native drives are usually smaller)

I got two of these new elements, they are fairly good and pretty simple as well. Just a plastic box with a usb port.

    • +1

Just tried it, $13.65 postage to Melbourne (3000) using registered post.

      • Ta, I think I will just wait until someone else cracks one open to confirm it is native SATA. The price +shipping isn't cheap enough to risk it over buying a bare drive.

    • ah dupe post

  • Can we use the hdd for ps3?

    • Only if you format it as FAT32. NTFS does not work with PS3.

      • But then doesn't FAT32 only support up to a certain amount of GB's?

        • +1

The drive volume size is restricted only by windows XP + to 32GB, to try and force people onto NTFS. You can format it with the command line, or 3rd party tools, (or Win98) to any size you want.

Any single file under FAT32 is limited to 4GB in size.

  • Sydney city, sold out…

  • PCDIY (on staticice) has this for $99 as well. They are also in VIC.

  • North Sydney has a box load of these, don't know why they have bumped up the price to $109 on the website?

  • I got a Seagate 1 Terabyte at MSY for $135 - and i think it's even cheaper now! Check out http://www.msy.com.au/
Its a pretty bad looking website, but really good deals.

    • Those are 3.5" drives which are a lot bigger than this 2.5" drive. If you want something portable, you want small. In any case, I just got one today from the Hurstville store still for $99. They still have a stack of these there.
