11

I just received a text message from Pedders offering a 50-point brake, suspension and steering check for $20, which according to the link they provided is almost a 30% saving.

50-point brake, suspension and steering check?
    i see 3 points there

  • Price in the title please

    • Title edited, sorry it's my first time!

  • Any obligation to have the work the suggest done? Are they the sort of place that 'finds' lots of problems you never knew you had?

    • Not at all, they provide a report on sections that have failed, suggest appropriate repairs and you both go on your way.

    • Yep!

I'll never deal with these guys again, had this check done and was told I needed a heap of work done including things such as new shocks, brake pads etc for around about $1300 worth of parts and labor. Got a second opinion and they told me the only thing that might need replacing was the brake pads.

There's also heaps of stories about how they bait you with a cheap check up then use scare tactics and tell you your car isn't safe to drive in the hope you will panic and ask them to do the work while they have the car in their garage

    • Yep, had a similar experience. Lucky I had a real mechanic who called bs on most of the "report".

    • Yep good call. I'm amused by the way that they charge to bait you. If it was free they would get more bait lol

The only time I would you this service is if I was planning to buy a second hand car off someone. Then they would point out all the bullshite problems and I could use that to talk down the asking price. Then only bother to get the real stuff done later by an honest machanic if needed.

  • Omg they charge u now so they have a reason to rip you off later hahha. This is just revenue generating exercise and should really be free. This sort of thing is done when you get ur car serviced anyways

  • I'm stil wary of Pedders after that ACA report on them.

    Pedders Statement

Will take a little while longer before I'd trust them.

    • In that statement "the other employee’s very short tenure (5 days - which included two days absent)" confirms my opinion that ACA can be more shonky than those they investigate.

I agree re: A Current Kerfuffle. But, in the Pedders statement this is plain double speak.

The RACQ are not specialists in steering and suspension systems and have different inspection philosophies and methods to Pedders. Promoting the RACQ as an “industry expert” in steering and suspension is incorrect and their use in this story with reference to Pedders has the potential to be misleading as their approved repairers are a retail competitor to Pedders outlets.

No its true, they arent. But they are heavily involved in the motor industry and expert in reviewing it. They also use qualified operators to provide them information. Stating that 'approved repairers' was a competitor is an admission of guilt. In other words, you should only ask Pedders if Pedders are dodgey. All while implying everyone has an axe to grind, a dog in the fight and cant trusted, but Pedders are hard working, misunderstood and hard done by.

Its a chain, they cant be trusted to not rip you off. Whos to say whats ripping off. Maybe a bush has three years left it in it, but it has slight signs of not being new any more. Ooops, thats unsafe, might break tomorrow. Might break in 3 years, might be dodgey in 4 but last 6.

Mate of mine worked at Midas in the 80s. Same scam, anything that has even the slightest hint its not perfectly brand new, its suspect and on the quote if you want PROPER maintenance.

  • Lol these guys are a joke. Will make you spend shit tons on a problem you don't have…only to take your car to the next Pedder and they will identify those same 'critical, must fix now' problems.

Search for specialized Suspension mechanics around your place and take your car there.

      Thankfully there's no obligation involved.

I think $20 is fair to get a decent idea on what could be a problem, then to take it to your local dealership/mechanic to get a second opinion.

It's more of a waste of $20. Their checks most likely will have false flags hence their check up might not even be worth it.

You are forgetting to click "I am associated with Pedders Suspension"

        • Cute implication, but I don't work for Pedders, I've just used them in the past.
