not sure how they can justicfy calling that an ultrabook its pretty much the same size as a laptop and has damn good cpu,ram and graphics.
but still nice price and nice battery life

    • +2

It's 13.3 inch screen. Weights 1.4kg. Normal laptops weight 2.4-2.6. Damn good specs tho.

    • +1

Some companies have even called 15" laptops as Ultrabooks. The name is trademarked to Intel and basically is anything with Intel Core Processor, Intel Wireless and needs to be thin and boots up within seconds etc. Ultrabooks are not necessarily small in area but has to be thin and nimble. The small ones are called Netbooks that are <10" in size etc.

  • What's does 30Whrs mean? (Battery life)

    • 30 watt-hours - it's the battery's capacity.

    • +2

Basically, the battery can deliver 30 watts of power continuously to the laptop for 1 hour. Or 15 watts for 2, 5 watts for 6 etc…

  • +1

I have the Zenbook from the previous generation. Gotta love it!

Awesome specs aside from the glass display. I prefer matte screens as glass screens hurt my eyes after prolong use.

    Display - Glare 13.3' Touch LED Back-lit WV 170 degrees NTSC:72% FHD 1920x1080 16:9 Ultra Slim 300nits

    • +1

All touchscreens are glass therefore glary. U could counter the glare somewhat by getting an anti glare screen protector

      • True that.

      • +1

Not all touchscreens are glass, I've got a retro Toshiba Portege M750 with a matte touchscreen.

Got the beast back in 2012 has a SSD and looks like one of those tactical secret agent laptops. Every time I whip it out people are in shock like what is that retro brick. I have a laugh but it's perfect for uni wordprocessing & browsing work

      • Only capacitive touch screens are glass, resistive touch screens are usually matte. Like what you find on GPS units etc.

        • Ahhhhh I see

    • Yep, glass screens have too much glare for me. Dell i5 XPS 13 at around this price has a matte screen.

  • Hoping I can get Officeworks/JB/Anywhere at all to price match this. Looking to put it on some line of credit and have the payments deducted pre tax each pay. Wish me luck!

    • Officeworks does not price match coupon deals.

    • goodluck with that as its part of a 'clearance' sale office works will probably say' we cannot price match the item as it is on clearance'.
i found most places try to wiggle out of price matching and officeworks in my experience has been the worst of them.(but that could just be that my nearest officeworks are a-holes)

Seems like DSE only ones who stock this. StaticICe search only returns dicks

  • +1

I purchased this for $1407 from DSE back in September. It's been a great laptop. Nice and light, plenty of power and good battery life.

edit: This has the i7-6500u, mine is the previous gen i7-5500u. So should have even better battery life.

    • +1

      Hi Owler,

Coup you kindly comment on the battery life? How many hours could you get?

      Thanks.

      • +2

Probably 7ish hours at 100% brightness, browsing ozbargain or similar.

        • Thanks :)

  • why would you need 940m when you have 6500u?…
so retailers can say 'dedicated graphics'?
    good price though

    • +3

6500u is only half the speed or less of the 940M. The 940M can play GTA V at 720p in high settings at pretty much 60fps, along with Fallout 4 with medium settings at 720p within 45fps. You cant do that with the onboard chip. I know because I have the older version from a previous deal and I love it since it plays pretty much all the latest games at 720p without any issues.

"The integrated graphics unit called HD Graphics 520 represents the "GT2" version of the Skylake GPU (Intel Gen. 9). The 24 Execution Units, also called EUs, are clocked at 300 - 1050 MHz and offer a performance somewhere in range of a dedicated GeForce 820M"

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i7-6500U-Notebook-Pr…

      • +3

Just to clarify this further: The PC will use the integrated GPU (HD Graphics 520) for most tasks - it's powerful enough to handle office applications, web browsing and basic media playback. It's also very energy-efficient, so your battery life is conserved during these applications.

When graphics-intensive applications are launched (eg games, high-resolution video, 3D modelling or similar) the dedicated GPU (940M) will fire up automatically to handle those tasks. It is a substantially more powerful unit, and battery life will be diminished while the dedicated GPU is in use. The 940M will automatically deactivate once it's no longer needed.

While the 940M is not well suited to heavy gaming applications, it's still powerful enough to handle most modern games at 720p and decent detail levels.

    Just a warning to all…
I got this laptop for my birthday five months ago. It has good specs and looks nice but…there's a major fault with these laptops- the hinge. Mine has broken after five months of light/careful use to the point where it looks like it's been dropped off a 20 storey building (previous laptops have lasted me 5+ years).
Have a look on Amazon/Google for similar stories-
    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Zenbook-UX303-13-Inch-Laptop/dp/B…
I would recommend against getting this laptop unless you want heartache/headaches

    • Thanks for the heads up! Was considering this or the xps13. That makes it easier!

      • +1

Xps 13 is the best ultrabook on the market along with the Surface Book. NO other laptop has received stellar reviews like these two have.

The price is the only thing putting people off.

    • I read a lot about that as well - but I thought they fixed it since the Broadwell version with a variation of the hinge and toughening it up. The older Haswell ones were quite common for this.

  • +1

Purchased the previous version model (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208565) and it has been serving me well thus far.

A lot of the issues with the hinge is because of the overuse of the touchscreen and pushing back the screen while you are doing so. Furthermore, the overall build of the laptop does feel sub-par for the price range.

In saying so, the specifications for such a small, slim device is second to none and the audio/visual quality and the abundance of ports does really make this a really good device to own.

    • The only thing I'd complain about mine is the keyboard.. its pretty bad as it misses keypresses especially if you are a fast typist. Its not just limited to this though - almost all of the Asus keyboards I've had in laptops are all as bad. Otherwise I love it

  • +1

incredible price for what you get.

  • If anyone is thinking of extended warranty, its cheaper from Asus directly.
I know about acl, but if you want international warranty its available for you from asus cheaper than dse extended local warranty.

I have the previous model ux32vd everything has been great with it except the black screen issue during bootup, maybe the drivers crash between the Intel HD and Nvidia cards, can't be fixed pretty annoying

  • This is exactly what im looking for to buy.temporarily out of stock though.
Actually, i was thinking to buy this on cyber monday from US. would that be cheaper?

    • Not with the terrible aud to usd exch rate
Also no international warranty (hinge issue), postage fees, 10% gst payable on postage and item, customs fee too.

  • +1

Thinkpad e560 with 16gb ram, i7-6500u, 15.6 fhd display, 192gb ssd for $1200 on lenovo store with free shipping is a better deal IMO. R7 m370 trumps geforce 940m too.

    • R7 M370 doesn't trump 940m according to notebookcheck

      • I was about to say…..don't think that's accurate.

  • Just returned from JB, they had nothing comparable. Was going to buy this from DS and now its out of stock! So dam close!

  • +1

i know is Skylake but can you really get over 7 hours battery life with just 30wH? my old Asus T100 has a 30wH battery except it's running Baytrail with a smaller 10" lcd and no dedicated graphics, sometimes pc companies look at the cpu and think "hey this new cpu uses less power, let's put in a smaller battery", but think how much more runtime you'd get if they used a 50wH! say what you want about Apple but they always cram the largest battery they can fit into their laptops, which is why Apple doesn't sell extended batteries, never have, never will, don't need to

    • +2

I had to read a few times to understand that.

    • My Broadwell version from a few months ago definitely will do 6 hours on normal use and very high brightness. It would get 7 hours with the newer CPU and tweaked to use even less battery.

  • Just another headsup, I've been trying to contact DSE for the last week to return a faulty mouse (I ended up going to Logitech directly). Each time I am on hold for about 30 minutes and then the call disconnects. I have also sent an enquiry via their website and have had no response to that either (for four days).

I am not the only one.

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/dick-smith-electronics.htm…

  • Better than a clevo?

  • It's now available online. I bought mine from DS store for 1301 last week.

    • +1

How did you manage to get it for $1301?
