just paid full price for one two days ago |-(

A very nice unit and a million times better than the piece of junk Optus gave me.

    • Some places do a price guarantee. Check the retailer you bought it from.

    • +3

Check your store's return policy. Buy this one from EB and return it to your store unopened.
Although, make sure your initial store accepts change of mind returns.

      • ^ Be careful of doing this. If the serial number is printed on the receipt your chances of returning are slim. It wont match serials on their databases.

      • For $40 I'm happy to suck it up and write it off as "typical". Very nice piece of kit even at full price.

  • What store was it $128 at? was that advertised or just the price it scanned at?

    • Galeries Victoria. City. Price on box $128.

  • I read quite a few reviews about these modems but rejected it because it doesn't have VoIP* built in. Is that because people don't want/know about VoIP, or do people pay extra for a separate device to make VoIP calls?

I'd really like to hear people's thoughts.

*VoIP is Voice Over IP. It means that you make phone calls using your Internet connection. Typically, calls are free or significantly cheaper (eg. with Adam Internet, I am entitled to $50 VoIP calls a month free to landlines anywhere in Australia).

    • how much money do you actually save by using VoIP ? with land line and internet being bundled these days and specially if you use ADSL it kind of made it pointless to use voip (IMO, dont your voip fanatics go nuts on me.. hehe), i had naked dsl before and used VoIP (and i had a lot of issues) but i didn't save any money as naked dsl pretty much was the same price or more than bundled dsl (this is with tpg, noticed the same theme for most other isp'), i guess it makes sense if you make a significant amount of international calls.

anyway i have this modem/router and bang for buck its very good, doesn't have the bells and whistles the ones from other brands which are 2-3x the price.

      • I just use my mobile phone and don't bother with VoIP. $30 per month for unlimited landline and mobile phone number calls and of course since is mobile can be used any where around town unlike VoIP.

        • Nice deal. Who is your plan with?

        • +1

Me too. Unlimited calls with my NBN bundle and my mobile plan. Who wants to faff around with voip?

        • +2

          @elektron:

I'm with the Vodafone Combo $30 (because i got a $30 starter SIM for $10 a little while ago). http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/prepaid/prepaid-options

But Optus also has the same sort of $30 unlimited phone calls deal. http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/plans?SID=con:pr…

Both also offers 1.5GB data and unlimited SMS.

Who needs VoIP for calls to landline and mobile phone when you've got that.

        • @hollykryten:

Thanks mate, will look into it. I'm currently on the $29 Vaya plan, which includes about 10 hours talk time, which includes 2.5GB data with kb billing. I think they now offer the same plan for $27.

Completely agree - VoIP is so last decade.

        • @hollykryten: Can you explain how you get that for $30/month? I see the $30 starter pack but if you click to recharge the cheapest is then $40 so it's only $30 for the first month??

      • +2

how much money do you actually save by using VoIP

Good question. I am a reasonably big internet user (100+ gb a month). With Adam, I get naked connection, 200gb, $50 calls for $70. My VoIP calls effectively cost me nothing, nor do I pay $35 for a landline fee.

I just use my mobile phone and don't bother with VoIP.

My mobile phone plan can absorb some of those calls (I get 5 hours of calls on my mobile for for $20/month), but without a landline, I'd have to pay more for my mobile phone plan and my parents/etc would have to pay more to call me and I would have very little broadband.

So I figure the average person is paying more for a landline and PSTN calls. I put together a budget for a few friends and calculated a saving of around $20 (min) per month by switching to VoIP.

I like what hollykyryen said if you're not a big Internet user. If I knew a telco that provided unlimited local/national calls for $30 a month and data, plus I could get cheap Internet without a landline, I'd go for it instead.

I've looked at my options a number of times. The VoIP saves me money. But I know it doesn't suit everyone's needs (eg. my brother wouldn't benefit). Hence, my open question.

        • +1

I am a reasonably big internet user (100+ gb a month).

          That's what I would call a casual user. :S

        • Hang on, that sounds like you're getting a terrible deal compared to me.

I pay $60/month for unlimited ADSL2+ including the land line with TPG.

If I paid an extra $10 (i.e. total cost $70/month, what you're paying now), I'd get unlimited local/national/mobile calls too, and it would be over the PSTN, rather than over VoIP (which in my experience isn't really all that great over ADSL anyway!).

    • the NBN Will do VOIP for me, I dont need to add extra RJ11 ports

    • +2

Between Skype and my Mobile, I don't need a landline or a separate VoIP service.

      • Skype makes sense. Did you buy a special handset for use with Skype?

        • +2

          No, you do not.
Just install a Skype app on your mobile phone and use it.

        • @Foma2: Thanks for the feedback. That's most probably a big contributor to the cost/benefit equation.

        • @DeWalt:
You can also use your mobile phone's built-in SIP service or install CSip Simple. That way you don't need VOIP hardware on your modem.

        • @Dacs: Skype does not use SIP, it uses it's own proprietary protocol.

Hey OP, upload your receipt please?

    • +5

      See description. Receipt link posted.

      • Awesome thanks!

  • +6

Good modem just make sure the first thing you do when it comes out of the box is a firmware update. Mine was useless before an update, flawless since.

    • +2

Agreed. The user interface looks much better too.

    • +2

I second this. Great modem - just need that firmware update.

Well after looking at the receipt I just learnt that EB stand for Electronics Boutique. Wellll LA DI DAAAA! THey could rebrand with that and serve lattes while you shop for games.

    • Wow, easy downvoting team. Just a lighthearted wisecrack.

  • +1

This compared to D9, does it make that much of a difference?

    • +2

I have both and using D9 this moment, D9's 2.4G is better coverage, 5Ghz probably the same. D9 response slightly faster like says open a page ( with a fast PC i7-3770, 8gb and 250GB 850pro). D9 run cooler, D7 sometimes is really hot.

      • Thanks!

      • the only time my D7 ran hot (had one for at least a year was someone put a jumper over it to block the light from the leds - man it was hot.
any other time its just been warm, norm electronics temp.

  • Will the range cover ~50m property?

    • Doubt it. I can just connect in my driveway, 30m away

    • You will want to add this to your network if you wish to cover the distance

      http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=UAP-LR&spos=3

It uses PoE so you don't need to be an electrician to set it up, just run a LAN cable to where you want to put the device and then on the other end of the LAN cable is where you plug it into the wall and the power and LAN both travel over the same LAN cable :) Make sure you run CAT6 cable though.

  • Recently bought the D9 and even though I cannot make a fair comparison I'm very pleased with the purchase and would highly recommend it.

  • I have this modem and it's great. Only thing is that no ability to flash DDWRT

  • Just paid $160 last month which I thought was a decent deal considering I couldn't wait any longer to upgrade… ah well :(

Overall very happy with the unit. As mentioned by someone else in this thread, make sure you grab the latest firmware update as soon as you take it out of the box. The new software interface is much, much cleaner and easier to navigate/set up.

  • Does anyone have personal experience on its 2.4Ghz performance?

  • Purchased mine last year for $157. Been very happy with it. Hasn't skipped a beat. It's power brick died after a power surge but TP-link replaced it quickly.

I didn't know about the firmware upgrade and since I haven't touched it, I'm probably using the older firmware. I will look into the updated firmware now.

  • +1

    Price updated on their website.

    Says $128 now

    • Good thing. That means if it's not stocked at the local EB Game stores you can get one delivered instead.

    • I can not find it.
      Maybe been deleted?

I see the link now. But cant do a search on their site to find it.

  • Or if none nearby, use it for a price match

  • +2

Purchased this from JB last month for $150 (cheapest at the time). When I got home I realised the box was open and returned by someone (paper cd case ripped opened, finger prints on the modem, cables not neatly tied etc). I didn't bother taking it back to the store as it worked as intended. However I didn't get to experience that oddly satisfying feeling of peeling the plastic film off the new modem.

  • Can I use this for my current ADSL2+ TPG network? My wireless connection has been disconnecting a lot and I am looking for a new one.

    • +1

This modem will work with TPG ADSL2+

      • If TPG ADSL2+ uses PPPoE or PPPoA then i'm sure it would.

    • +2

i can confirm this works with TPG ADSL2

  • +1

Great modem/router, can't recommend it highly enough

  • +1

Will this work on NBN (FTTN)?

    • it has an ethernet WAN port for cable or fibre.

  • $7 of the ozbargainer in me just died

  • +3

Just went down to officeworks and got the price beat on this.

    • Were they annoyed while they were doing it? Lol

      • +1

Nope - the guy just double checked the model and then processed it while muttering "hmmm didn't know EB did routers"

  • By any chance anyone knows this is v2.0 of the model? V2.0 has 16MB flash memory.

    • Version 1.1 at Officeworks

  • How is it as a media server?

    • I use mine to stream direct to my lg smart tv using 5ghz .been great .no complaints here .recommended

      • Thanks

  • Confirmed Officeworks price match @$115

    • Great price!

    • $128 - 5% = $121.6

      how could it be $115?

      • Maybe they hit the discount twice?

  • Do the quality of ADSL modems matter? Would I be better off getting a good quality ADSL modem+router like this one to replace the Sagecomm F@ST by optus or should I just get a good quality AC wifi router?

    • the modem on this has been great, better than the linksys I had before.
I get better more stable speeds and much better wireless on this.

  • How do these compare to the WD8960N?

    • Much better than the 8960N, supports 5ghz N/AC wifi, Supports 1300mbps AC where the 8960N is only 300mbps N wifi.

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up at my local office works for $121.60.

  • Can I use this modem router for cable network (optus). How can I connect this router to cable internet as cable has coaxial connection? Also, will I get any extra benefit from this router over the Optus Netgear CG3000V2 router (my wired and wireless speed is max at 30mbps atm) about 10-15 devices connected. I don't know much about networking, so if anyone can guide me I would appreciate it much. Thnx

    • No, you can't use an ADSL2+ modem on Optus cable.
You can however, connect this to your CG3000V2 for better WiFi (using the Router part only). D7 has dual band wireless AC (up to 450Mbps on 2.4GHz band and 1300Mbps on 5GHz) while CG3000V2 has single band wireless N (up to 300Mbps on 2.4GHz).

However, if you want to improve WiFi, you're better off buying a dedicated WiFi Router (without a modem). These are usually cheaper than modem/routers.

Also, to make use of faster WiFi speeds, your devices (computers, phones, etc) need to support wireless AC and/or dual band.

      • So you mean I use CG3000v2 as modem (bridge mode) and D7 as router? However, I am more interested in the benefits I would get over the CG3000v2 if switch to TP-link D7/C7 AC1750. I do not own any AC supported devices, so do you reckon it would give me any extra benefit over current optus provided router that might be useful?

p.s. Would AC routers make any difference to wireless speed even if I have AC supported device given that the ISP speed (max 30mbps) is the bottleneck?

        • +1

So you mean I use CG3000v2 as modem (bridge mode) and D7 as router?

          Yes.

I am more interested in the benefits I would get over the CG3000v2 if switch to TP-link D7/C7 AC1750

If you don't have any AC devices, then the TP-link D7 or C7 will still provide benefits including:
          - faster processor to handle more simultaneous devices (10-15 devices or more).
          - better WiFi range due to bigger external antennas (antennas are also detachable and can be replaced if better coverage is required).

There's more to networking than just sharing the internet eg. streaming videos from PC to TV, transferring files between devices, backups to router connected drives, etc. In those scenarios, WiFi AC devices would benefit regardless of what the ISP speed is.

If however, you just want to share your internet connection and you're not having any WiFi issues/dropouts, then there's no need to upgrade your current CG3000v2.

  • Is this national?

  • Will a Melbourne Officeworks price match an EB like this from Sydney ?

I assume has to be in same city.

  • Thanks op. Was about to spend $149 today on this very router. You read my mind. Cheers!

  • Office works Shepparton wouldn't match the price. They rang EB Games and the store said they selling for $200 and they don't match online website. She began saying would be price plus postage but then after ringing EB said no deal.. Missed out

    • But it says in store only? So of there is a store near you they should be that price. Maybe the place they called hadn't changed the sticker on the box. I'd try again

  • Thanks. Was looking at possibly buying a D5 from MSY for $129 in the next few weeks. Went to OW and got them to 5% this one. Could only get V1.1 though, none of the EB Games stores around me that had stock had the 2.0 version.

    • dumb question: whats the difference between v1v1 & 2.0 ?

      • According to an earlier post in this thread, the 2.0 has more flash memory. No idea if there are any other differences worth noting, but as a rule getting the newest hardware version possible tends to be better.

        • I have 1.1
torrents, ps3, foxtel, tablets, phones, computers, network drive - all connected and never had an issue.

  • +1

Openwrt works on C7. Does it also work on this (D7)?

    • Doesn't appear that way. The D7 has the ADSL modem, and generally all-in-ones aren't supported by OpenWRT (or DD-WRT either, for that matter) due to a lack of open-source drivers for the modems. Can't find anyone saying they got the D7 working, just a lot of unanswered posts from people asking, or saying they bricked it trying.

  • Just bought the C9 for $160 from Officeworks on Friday morning - price matched to centrecom. She didn't even bother checking.

  • Bought the D7 from Officeworks Chadstone (3148) for $121.60. Brought in the EB printed webpage and the NSW reciept and had no dramas.

    • Same here,Browns Plains, QLD.
Didn't need the receipt though, just had to do a bit of convincing him that EB had them in stock, as the only way you can tell is to ring your local store.

      • I got OW to price match. Closest EB didn't have stock but the next closest did. Told the guy that and he had no problems doing it for $121.60

  • +1

Got one for $121.60 from OW with their price beat, just showed them the same modem on the EB Games website on my phone and all good, no hassles, no issues, thanks OP :)

  • Awesome deal, got it from OW today.
    Thanks OP :)

Got from OW Bourke Street, Melb, showed ebgames offer on phone, staff verified on website and got it for 121.60. Love Officeworks !!
