You want to play anything at all, get the 250GB.

You can use an external hard drive, or just swap this one out with a spare (or buy a 250GB/320GB drive, used ones are dirt cheap on eBay)

      • external HDD don't work. you need to install one into the system

        • Actually you're right, I was under the impression you could run games externally, but it's only media.

But if you have an external, it's still easy to grab the internal drive and pop it into this.

Each to their own, but I think that 'not-so-slim' 250GB version is by far away the nicer design between it and the newer model and it'd be my pick. From memory the build quality of the predecessor was better with the newer ones losing the slot loading CD drive and some of the other nice aspects of the older one.

    • My PS3 slim is 7 years strong, haven't had a fault to this day.

      • I've still got the old 60gig fat PS3 runs no dramas with CFW.

        • I want CFW, but I'm too scared to downgrade, as it requires disassembly (though our PS3 is totally unused, since we invested in a HTPC), did you DIY or get a store to do it?

        • @deanylev: I did one of those really early jailbreaks that had a usb sticks that I ordered from some shonky website. Then it evolved slightly and I've kept it CFW ever since I think pre 3.55.

What firmware version are you at now ?

        • @Kaboda: 4.xx something, I think

      • Yeah I got the original PS3 slim day one and it's help up great. Beautiful system.

Is there any place you can still buy that one? I'm looking for one myself as a spare in case my phat one dies.

      • If you're happy with second hand maybe gumtree or EB games? Not sure if many stores would have new stock or not.

        • Shame. I really don't like the super slim for both PS3 and 360 (E model). Both reek of cost cutting.

Can cfw be installed on the superslims yet?

    • I'm pretty sure not. There's some dodgy looking YouTube tutorials, but nothing too official looking.

    • Such a pity jailbraking was thwarted back with the early 'fat' models.

    • What are the benefits of CFW?

Why bother when the next gen can be had for under 300.

      different titles

    • +3

amazing games you can get for like $5 on ps3

  • I have a Sony bluray with iview and sbs on demand, is there anything else I can do with this that I can't do with my bluray? (I have a 360 and hardly play it so besides that)

    • netflix, stan, crackle, crunchroll, Funimation, youtube … all with a smart DNS of course :)

      • Haven't checked but I can do most if not all of that on my 360 right? (bk it sure about the smart dns)

My bluray has some of them too but not all, I think between them I can do all of them except maybe Stan?

        • not sure which VOD apps are on the 360.
smart dns should work (there's instructions on how to setup getflix for 360).

not really worth it, just for stan … and the price of the ps3 "should" keep going down

        • @Curiosity: for TV I'd probably look at a Roku, Chomecast, Apple TV (even the older one) and things like that. Console seems potentially overkill if you have a bluray player already and won't play games. I'd also think it's likely some of those more current yet cheaper devices could have a longer support cycle moving forward than Sonys last generation console, but who knows.

There are one or two games available for the PS3

      • I think you missed the word 'only' somewhere

    • play Journey

  • My PS3 fat is still going strong too! Use it quite frequently for netflix and streaming from the pc!
