Dr Nick: "The B is for Bargain!" :)

Bargain if genuine. I'll bet they are not.

Edit: they do not claim it's genuine at all.

    • It's sad that we live in a world where we must assume goods are counterfeit by default, unless explicitly advertised as genuine.

That said, there's a chance these are genuine, since they appear to be the old style chargers that Apple have stopped shipping since around the iPhone 5. Perhaps they're just clearing out old stock.

    Colour Gun Metal Grey

Didn't know apple chargers came in gun metal grey
    lol

    • +8

I think "gun metal grey" is what colour these turn after they short circuit and burn your house down!

      • Really??
        Thats an amazing feature.
        Stocking stuffers for everyone ;)

Just make sure you have an updated house insurance deal pre-BurningDownTheHouse

Does anyone know what is the highest amperage that an iPhone can take advantage of? i.e. Is it worthwhile using a 3+ amp charger?

    • +1

      mine goes alright with 2.4amps

    • An iPhone 5 or lower charges at 1.0 Amps maximum. The iPhone 6 will charge at 2.1A if it's given the correct Data Line signal voltages (ie: from an iPad charger).

    • the current is controlled by the phone and they stop at 2.1 amps due to cable specs. the idea of higher current chargers is so you can charge 2 devices at the same time.

you can't charge tablets overnight with a 5 W charger hence the apple ones are now 12W so can be used for phone or tablet.

yes apple charger is different to normal usb charger in how it tells the device that it's a high current charger not a PC USB port , so yes Apple charger charges Apple devices quicker than normal charger.

  • they are not compliant, they dont have the white bits on the pins, required by law… so i dont think they are legit.

    • Look carefully at the picture - it shows that the pins are insulated at the base.

I'm pretty sure that Apple is charging 29.90 for the 10W ones, not the 5W..

    • yes, and this is old version.
I bought 2 for $14.9 each from apple shop 2 years ago when apple clear the stock.

    • the Apple ones are now 12 W so they can charger tablets, the 10w ones used to get very hot charging tablets but were great for phones.

  • That's not the right code for the picture.

  • +1

Looks legit. This is the same product from Dick Smith http://www.dicksmith.com.au/apple-ipod/apple-5w-usb-power-ad…. Same catalogue numner and all.

    • +1

Easy to copy what something looks like on the outside. As quarrymaster pointed out further up, the model number they quote is totally different to what they're selling.

      • -2

I think it's a deal powered by Dick Smith and you will get what's advertised on the Dick Smith website. We know DS have a history of deals on other cheap websites such as COTD and groupon

        • +1

Again, the model number they're quoting to make it 'official' isn't the model they're selling. How hard can it be to put the actual model number of the charger up if it's legit when the model number is on the charger itself?

And if DSE are involved, stay the hell away :-P

        • +1

@Porthos: I am not really fussy what the model number is or what it looks like. As long as it's a genuine Apple 5W charger I will be happy. And if it's a deal powered by DS it should be genuine. I'm happy to take the risk

If it turns out not to be genuine then I wil dispute the charge with my credit card provider.

        • @unity1:
Why is it that you think it's powered by DSE though? I don't get how because DSE sell one that looks the same you think it's from them? Not having a go at you, just wondering if there's something I've missed in the listing/deal?

        • +2

          @Porthos: It's only a guess and a bit of a gut feeling.

At the bottom of the one 1-day listing they have a Cat No. A8827.

Now if you look at the same product on the DS site it has the exact same model# MD811X/A and Catalogue# A8827.

So they have either copied the information from the DS website, otherwise this was the information provided to them by DS.

Knowing that DS have had various deals on similar websites ie COTD, Scoopon, Groupon etc, it's possible that this deal has some connection to DS.

Also, if you click on the 1-day home page they are advertising these as "Genuine Apple Accessories"

No actual proof, but just an educated guess.

        • @unity1:
Hmm that's fair enough reasoning. If I could take the risk, I'd go for this deal. Just something doesn't seem right by it though.

A couple of extra iPhone chargers would definitely be handy.

        • +1

@Porthos: I will let you know what happens and what I end up receiving.

I have an old iPhone 3GS I want to get rid off and this is the type of charger which came in the box. So if I get the charger as pictured I can sell the iPhone 3GS as a complete unit.

        • @unity1:
Cheers :-) Pity by then the deal won't be available for me to jump on though haha.

        • @Porthos: I only need the one. I might be able to post one out to you if you really need one, providing it's the genuine article.

        • @unity1:
Let me know, I'll definitely consider the offer! :-)

        • @unity1:

" advertising these as "Genuine Apple Accessories""

Yes - as in genuine accessories for Apple - sometimes followed by "sorry for the misunderstanding - English isn't our first language - we'll change the title.

Even on an Aus based site with an Aus address, the "Genuine Samsung Nexus battery" had been altered to "Genuine Nexus OEM battery" by the time I queried its lack of NFC.

If we are putting in an obligatory DS reference, this is a similar sting to "HD ready" that they had their wrists tickled for…

  • 5W is only 1Amp at 5V

    So a pretty weak/outdated charger

    • So a pretty weak/outdated charger

It's a charter for an early model iPhone. They only draw 1 amp, so it's pointless getting anything more powerful.

      • it has a standard USB outlet, so you could use it to charge anything…that doesn't need more than 1A.
Not many would be buying this to specifically charge an early model iphone

        • Not many would be buying this to specifically charge an early model iphone

Of course they would - that's pretty much the ENTIRE REASON to buy this! It's specifically intended to replace the original iPhone Charger and refurbish an early model iPhone or iPod for resale or whatever. Or to sell an iPod "with Apple Charger" which makes it more desirable, or even as a spare charger on an early model iPhone (I have 4 of them used for exactly that purpose).

You wouldn't buy a replacement older-style Nokia or Samsung USB charger unless you needed one to make your Nokia or Samsung phone "complete again" for resale. Nor would you pay $25-30 to buy this iPhone Charger if you wanted a general purpose high-powered charger for Android or whatever.

It is an OEM (style) EARLY MODEL IPHONE CHARGER. If you want a powerful, modern charger for universal use, then buy a Blitzwolf or other aftermarket charger.

    Foxtrot Alpha Kilo Echo

  • Yep 5w is only good for ipod now… might charge your iphone slowly and wont get an ipad going at all.

    • yeah last visit to apple shop the Chargers on the shelf are now 12 W haven't seem the 5w for a long time and then only bundled eg with iPods etc.

      5w won't do a tablet overnight.

  • Definitely look like genuine chargers (came unboxed). Not sure whether the lightning cables are genuine but these were not supposed to be included anyway.
