Saw this in Dell's latest promotion. A brand new sub-$500 desktop computer delivered from Dell. Dell Vostro 220s Slim Tower. Here's the specification:

  • Pentium Dual Core E5400 (2.7GHz) (1,809 PassMark)
  • 2GB DDR2
  • 160GB SATA
  • 16x DVD Writer
  • 18.5" Dell Entry E1910 LCD Monitor
  • X4500HD Graphics
  • 1 Year Onesite Service
  • Windows Vista Home Basic

For me Vista Home Basic would probably be the show stopper here. Otherwise quite a nice little desktop for the back to school kids (although Vostro was meant to be for business).

  • I'd like to believe that this is a genuine offer !

  • I was wondering how much would it be if you get the same settings from MSY? Seems a good deal to me, but it is dell, who knows whether it is a typo…

    • Yeah it was sent to me in an email — not Dell, but their affiliated group. It could be a typo especially when the box next to it are at the same price ($499) but a much cheaper Celery with 1GB RAM. But at the same time it's an old low end box so I'm not surprising that it's sold at this price.

    • E5400 $76
      2G-800 PNY /Kingston $54
      18.5” Acer X193HQ “$92 after Cashback” $121
      MSI G31M3-L $53
      Hitachi SATA 500G $59
      DVDRW SATA Aopen/BenQ $33
Antec Minuet 350 $132.50 (at Umart, no decent slimlines at MSY)
OEM 64 bit MS Win 7 Home Premium $115
Total $643.50 (from MSY unless noted
      $614.50 after cashback

Obviously this has some advantages - 500G HDD, better case/PSU, better version of Windows (Dell charge an extra $105 to upgrade to Win 7). But on the other hand you'd have to put it together yourself and the warranty would be more fiddly (but longer on most parts).

      • I always thought these OEMs made better cases, but then again I haven't bought a case for the past 5-6 years. Bigger HDDs (for desktops at least) is also not that important these days since you can get an ext. hdd (e.g. 1TB MyBook) quite cheaply.

      • Fair comparison although the Vostro's are designed for business (I can't explain why they put a home OS in it) and size of PC is very important in a cubicle. The height of this thing is only 10cm (about 2 5.25" drive bays). You will not find a case that thin in the DIY market because a standard ATX power supply is taller than that. Dell use their own custom sized PSU's in most cases (especially in their slimlines)

      • Acer X193HQ is a 1366x768 LCD, whereas Dell comes with FULL 19" 1440x900, a lot better.

  • Looks like a good deal and the offer looks genuine. It's compatible with Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, so it should work fine under Ubuntu. So just toss out the Vista Home Basic, that's worse than useless.

I remember reading somewhere that the PCI slots are half-height so don't expect to be able to add standard controller cards to it. USB gadgets should be fine, there are 6 sockets.

Pretty good deal, and some of those upgrades Dell has are seemingly okay too (to Core 2 Duo etc).

For an extra 8% off, use the code: LH$B?HVNXDSN4D
Valid for 2 more days, until 31 January 2010.

So, pretty good value for $459. Whether it's a mistake or not, we'll see.

Who builds systems with 2gb ram these days….

    • +2

2GB RAM is perfectly adequate for day to day stuff. Even right now, my machine is only using 750MB out of 4GB and I do a range of stuff on my machine, including surfing, playing media, file serving, downloading. But then this is using Linux and I wouldn't know about Windows. And if you are a gamer you wouldn't be interested in this machine anyway.

      • most people use 32bit software, so max 3GB useable, no big difference with 2G or 3G ram

      ummmm looks like Dell does…

  • You can get a laptop with similar stats for around the same price. Why buy a regular pc?

    • +1

The CPU in this desktop will eat most C2D laptops alive but will fall against i series.. then again this is $499 and has an 18.5" widescreen.

You don't buy this instead of a laptop, you buy whatever suits you. If you already have a nice laptop but want a newer desktop this is ideal.

  • this is quite competitively priced, thumbs up

  • Would this be able to transcode 1080p video for streaming to a ps3?

    • Easily..

  • where is the monitor??? I dont think its available. Someone please enlighten me

Hit customise, select monitor and you'll see "Dell (TM) Entry E1910 WideScreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor (VGA, DVI-D with HDCP) [Included in Price]"

      • Cheers Mate!

Just placed an order with this coupon code, worked for me:

    Dell - 8% Vostro Discount Coupon: CHK7T2KDL2DHBF, Expires 2nd May 2010.

  • awesome…with the extra 8% coupon almost can't afford not to buy this, picked me up one. thanks city and scotty.

  • Just ordered one with the 8% coupon, cheers guys :)

  • Hey guys, just bought this (thanks for the extra 8%!). Wondering if I can put my own video card in as I didn't get their upgrade. Was a bit filthy on the $100 Windows 7 upgrade, but I suppose it saves the hassle down the track anyway.

I have found out that it is capable of holding a video card, but what about the warranty? Same for upgrading RAM, I'm not sure what that will mean for the warranty either. I also rang Dell about the 64bit Windows 7 and they wouldn't allow that… I thought that was a bit rough as well. Then again, can't expect too much for the money either I suppose.

What are your thoughts on using this as a media player for a home theatre room?

Anyone want to buy my upgraded 20 inch monitor??? :-)

    • +1

X4500HD do support 1080p video. if you need a dedicated graphic, you only can install low profile card on it, i suggest HD4350 or upcoming HD5450, they are all low profile, just choose the fanless version.

      • Thanks KKK for your valuable advice. Will definitely take that on board.

  • update: I have recieved an email order confirmation for this purchase.

  • I received email order confirmation less than an hour after placing the order but three days later and the Dell website is still only reporting "Your order have been received by Dell and will be processed once payment information are verified."

So I'd say there is no guarantee that Dell are honouring this offer. Happy to be wrong of course :)

    • As much as I dislike Dell, they have very good pricing when it comes to desktop system, I have purchased close to 10 Dell PCs in the past couple of years mainly for friends and myself. And what I've come to learn is that you need to be very patient when dealing with them. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for the computer to arrive, and I've had to speak to their supervisors on more than one occasion.

  • ok, it's now showing Work In Progress
    http://upload.ozbargain.com/2010/02/03/3263_dell.png

    • I just recieved a Delivery Notification from Dell telling me I should get it before 11 Feb.

  • Mine just arrived :)

You should get one Peter !

  • I placed order on 01/02/10 and still haven't received my computer nor had I receive any feedback from DELL even if I've sent 4 email asking status of my order. I also called them twice, each time after more than 30 mins of waiting I get to speak to someone who only asked my order number then transferred me to someone else. Then their voice became so soft that I can't hear them at all, after I asked them to raise their voice a bit, they simply hung up on me! How rude! So in my 4th email I asked them not to charge my credit card - I won't buy from them for the rest of my life! Their products might be cheap but certainly customer service even cheaper!
