Well. It's a "targeted offer" as on average only 1 out 12 people can benefit. Melbourne Museum is celebrating 15 years at Carlton Gardens and they are offering free entry to anyone who was born in October. Need an ID to prove the birth month. Promotion valid Oct 21-27.

i would think it should apply to more than 1 in 12.
October is a high birth month.

on average only 1 out 12 people can benefit.

That may apply in N Korea where procreation is state managed :-)

    • +12

yeah 9 months prior is approximately Christmas/holidays!

      • +8

you too saw Santa kissing Mommy?!

        • my birthday was in early dec :P

just had a kid 12 weeks ago (was early)
          LOLZ

      • dupe message

    • Well Yesterday I was…..
      All by myself,very kubi

    • Agree! Both my kids and myself are born in Oct

    • Closer to 2/23 according to birth statistics (1/11.5), 1/12 is still close enough to round it.

    • October is a high birth month.

Does being "Born Again" count ?

  • October is a popular birthday month. Yes 2 in my immediate family including me and quite a few people i know. Can i have a free trip to Melbourne, never been, to happily visit the museum? lol. Other promotional freebies are on my bithday or day before and after which since my birthday is midweek I don't get too excited about. While i am thankful, it's not that enticing marketing people!

  • +3

as on average only 1 out 12 people can benefit.

    It's actually a lot less…

kids, pensioners and other concession card holders always get free entry…

    • -2

So, by adding kids, pensioners and other concession card holders to ANYONE born in October it means more people benefiting from this deal.

      • +1

it means more people benefiting from this deal.

Nope, only the adults born in October will be benefiting… The others would have got in free anyway…

        • +1

but at least they can now go twice for free..

        • +1

          @cornbeef:

          Free + Free = Free. Not 2 Free ;-)

        • +1

@dealman: They can still benefit from this deal regardless of whether or not they are already eligible for free entry lol

    • +7

1 out of 12 of those kids, pensioners and other concession card holders can benefit by now having someone willing to take them because it is free.

    October birth statistics in VIC

    • +3

So it is more like 1.0725 out of 12 people will benefit if you account for the higher than average October birth rates.

      • If you account for how many of them are normally eligible for free entry anyway it's probably less than 1 in 12 who benefit from the promotion.

      I've graphed the data…

The peaks in March and October are interesting…

      • Here's a chart showing October as the highest month for births from 2001 till 2012, for VIC only

        VIC birth rates by months

Also March is close to July, Aug and Sep.

        • Wow December period makes it so special to all couples!

      • What is it about March? Do people get their tax return mid-year and decide that they now have enough money to procreate?

        • +1

now have enough money to procreate?

Nope, they do it on the Queen's Birthday…

      • April 1999 was a slow month.

Either that or the millenium bug spooked everyone

      • lol jv who u bs u graphed the data, where you steal it from?

  • +1

Ahhh the pedanticism of OB…If you can't bet em…so going by the ABS birth data then yes, it's more like 1 in 11.2

    • +2

Ahhh the pedanticism of OB…If you can't bet em…

That's just the usual lighthearted banters not to be taken seriously. It's part of the making of a community.

      • Yeah i wasn't criticising, i was just mocking. I guess it's hard to convey the tone of a sentence when you type it.

        • Why mock? It's just injecting a bit of fun to the site. Well, at least you have left a comment, unlike the anonymous negative voting abuse by some which is not good for the community.

  • ….I'm lost… are we trying to say people are 'getting' more in October?? :P

    • +1

You may be surprised to know the human pregnancy period is not actually 12 months

      • This ozbargain….its hard to get surprised anymore :)

  • My 2 cents this place is worth paying for.

    • -8

      It was paid for…

      • +1

        jv…..

      • -1

Not quite sure why you're getting down voted… But not looking into it.

        Down voted.

  • +2

Cool Thanks my wife and I both born in October!!!

    • +1

      Happy birthmonth to you both!

      • +1

        Thanks Hashtagbargain!!
Mine was yesterday and her's is today…
        Cheers

  • +1

Pretty sure it's also free for students too

    • It is; I've even had friends visiting from overseas show their overseas student cards and get in for free.

  • Everything is privatised in Australia. In France, there is free admission to national museums and monuments for young people under 26-years-old from the European Union countries.

    • thats pretty racist

      • Is the European Union a race?

    • Museums are generally run by the State. There may be an entry fee but the majority of running costs are borne by taxpayers.

  • +2

    Quite discriminatory.

What about the Decembers? Augusts? etc. Are they not good enough?

    • +2

      August reporting in :(

    • No, they are not worth giving free entry. Everyone is welcome to visit. 😆😆😆

  • Darn I'm going to Melbourne in Nov.

  • +1

thats just month of birth discrimination.

  • FREE all year for health care / pension card holders and some other museums have free reciprocal membership deals. I think if works for members of:
    •Australian Museum (Sydney)*
    •Australian National Maritime Museum (Sydney)**
•Discovery Science and Technology Centre (Bendigo) (I know this one from personal experience)
    •Powerhouse Museum (Sydney)
    •Questacon (Canberra)῀
    •Science Alive! (Christchurch, NZ)
    •Science Centre (Brisbane)
    •Science Centre (Wollongong)
    •SciTech Discovery Centre (Perth)

  • I miss out by a day :-(

  • Its a pretty smart marketing ploy, most people are scared to go alone so they will bring a friend along who is likely to be a payer.

    • +2

why would someone be scared to go alone?

      • This is applicable to everything in life really, for some reason people are scared what others think of them. A good example is the movies, how many people do you see sitting by themselves? Its a prime example where friends are not needed, yet people go in groups.

    • +1

Scared, doubt it. Definitely more fun and interesting to go with family and friends. It is a good marketing strategy.

      • Scared in the sense, that it doesn't conform with social norm.

  • What do you do there in melb museum this week?

    • walk around and look at things

      • As in…this October event? Anyone has gone there yet?

        • +1

          meet other ozbargainers

        • @lolmao: will you be there?

I will…….nice to meet you all.

        • @mooreshady: unfortunately I wasn't born in October :(
