  • does this work with all bands here?

    • +5

The product specifications lists all the Australian bands, so yep.

    • +4

Not sure about bands for all carriers, but according to the eBay listing it has Bands 1, 3, 7, 8 and 28 - which means it's fully compatible with Telstra 4G and 4GX.

This is a VERY good deal.

  • No 1 camera with waterproof

    • +7

Waterproof with a warning not to put it under water though…

“You should not put the device completely underwater or expose it to seawater, salt water, chlorinated water or liquids such as drinks. Abuse and improper use of device will invalidate warranty."

Source: Disclaimer at the bottom of this page http://www.sonymobile.com/au/products/phones/xperia-z5/speci…

      • You have to check and make sure the tabs are closed before you do anything that involves water. I have a z1, took it snorkling and swimming, no a single issue, great videos and sound.

        • Also be aware the seal on the tabs easily fails, especially on the older models where the USB power tab would be used a few times a day. My original Z eventually got water inside through that tab, though it still mostly worked for several more months until it got the cracked screen which was also so common with the original Z.

        • The Z5 doesn't have tabs, I thought? Or is that just some, not all of the ports?

        • +1

@zzyss: I think it's only one for the microsd and sim slots. Rest has waterproof 'coating.' My Z2's headphone jack has turned green so wouldn't recommend taking it in water often.

    • +1

Yeah.. if its anything like the previous models, don't try to take photos underwater..
      http://www.abc.net.au/technology/articles/2014/10/15/4107561…

I'm actually surprised Sony didn't get hit with a class action given how many reports there are of failure by putting it underwater when they were clearly advertising it to do so.. (and there was no disclaimer before)

      • +2

For what it's worth, I know several people with older model Z-phones. Several of them have been subjected to "in water incidents" and all of them have escaped unscathed. One of them involved being dunked in a jug of water for several minutes, while another survived a drop from a top pocket into a bucketful of live fish. A guy on Whirlpool claims he goes water-skiing with his phone in his pocket.

The waterproofing is real, and in most cases it's effective. It's just that Sony don't accept warranty claims for water damage, which is pretty dodgy but it's impossible for them to confirm that the phone hasn't been subjected to high-pressure water etc that it's not rated for.

        • Unfortunately just no way to know if you're one of the lucky ones until it's too late.. Have even seen comments where it passed the "barometer test" (closing everything up, and checking the barometer reading while lightly pressing on the screen, supposedly meaning its sealed properly) but still failed underwater..

        • +2

@bamzero: been washing my Z1 since I got it (2014 i think). Had it under chlorinated water, then washed off with normal water. No problems encountered. I always hold the flaps down whenever it gets wet. Just in case. Also check for sand on the rubber gaskets. So far so good.

        • +2

@shernjr: The new models have a waterproof USB port now, so there's no flap to get loose and start leaking. The SIM and SD slot are still behind waterproof doors though.

        • @klaw81:

The way it should have been from the start.

        • @Pobman: I agree wholeheartedly. Might get the Z5 when price goes down :D

        • @shernjr: Expect to wait a year + then.

        • @shernjr:

I liked my original Z in general, though it was a lot cheaper than these current deals… but I did not like the level of support Sony offered for it.

Not wanting to compare things but I had an iPhone 3GS and 4 before the Z and had both replaced by Apple same day without question when they had issues. Wifes 4S was replaced at 22 months without question when the headphone socket had issues… but Sony had no such system, required posting the phone in and crossing fingers that they would accept it. They are also not consistent around the world, Sony UK for instance did start replacing the cracked Z1 screens for free in the end, but Sony Australia no chance.

Personally I think if Sony and Samsung et al want to offer high end devices with high end prices they need to step up and offer high end customer services too.

          Using Windows phone now :)

    • You know, Sony claims "The best camera on a smartphone" every year… But they always lose, very badly, in blind tests.

I'm betting that it will be the same again this year, with Samsung phones coming up on top, with a few iPhones here and there.

  • +21

They also list the new Z5 Compact at $759. After 20% coupon, that's $607.20, plus another 4% cashback (~$30) from CashRewards. All 4 colours available.

    • +1

It's a great price for the Z5 compact

    • +1

      bought

    • +1

Bought! Was tossing up between this and the iPhone 6S… well being literally half the price certainly tipped the scales in Sony's favour.

    • Also bought! Splashed on a Z3 Compact the other day (~$550) only to have them tell me they didn't have any in stock, this deal for $607 makes me feel much much better about it!

    • up vote for you… just bought my wife a new phone :) she'll be very happy

  • wow great deal.
im tossing between the normal one or the compact. I see the compact is 2gb ram oppose to 3gb ram. does anyone else know what the difference is besides size of course?

    • +6
      Z5 Z5C
      Screen 5.2"/1080p 4.6"/720p
      RAM 3GB 2GB
      Thickness 7.3mm 8.9mm
      Battery Probably worse* / 2900mAh Probably better* / 2700mAh

      Otherwise they're identical handsets internally.

*Even though the battery is smaller the lower screen resolution means that the compact variant typically gets better battery life. I can't find anywhere which has done a good comparison test yet. Both should be good for a full 2 days of normal use/6h+ screen on time - Sony handsets are known for good battery life.

      • Sony claim two days out of the z5 compact. If I didn't get the G4 in previous deal I might have been tempted to go with the z5c. Though there a bit different phones.

    • +1

Having 2 phones i find the smaller size of the z compact really useful, espceially when it comes to pocket real estate. if i had only one phone i would be going for the large screen version of the z

    • +2

Only thing is the compact a fair bit thicker. Was the same with the previous models and steered me off the compact.

  • just under 700 with cashrewards

  • Wow, great price… must not buy….

  • sooo so tempted!!!

    • +1

      damn…. ordered

  • +1

Is there a z5 premium on sale?

    • +1

      Not out yet.

  • Good price. Is the Z5 premium out yet?
How much for the premium ?

    • +1

      Not out yet.

    • Z5 premium is not yet released but is expected to be out in November.

      RRP is $1200

    • The Premium hasn't been released for sale yet, AFAIK. Retail price is reported at $1199.

  • +1

Hmmm… ordered this and everything I have says the price was $734.40, but my PayPal account was charged $918? Any ideas what is going on here?

Edit: disregard… my actual credit card was charged correctly.

    Sensational deal!

    • Yep, every Paypal deal gets these comments. The item is still full priced, but paid in part by you, and in part by Paypal.

    • +1

      doesn't get old

  • Not sure if I should jump on this or get the Note 5?
    Suggestions?

    • Hard to say, best to try both of them out and see how you like it.
I think this one is the one which has the plastic sides, Only the Z5 Premium is the metal sides and better screen.

      • +1

The Z5 doesn't use plastic. Glass and metal.

I'd go for this primarily based on the software-my experience with Samsung hasn't been great, as I've found they tend to slow down significantly after a month or so (software not hardware issue).

        • +1

          So you have used both?
And the Samsung software is not as efficient as the Sony UI?
Sony also has remote play, which is an added benefit.
          Thanks.

        • -1

Ah must have mistaken it for the Z5 Compact which uses plastic.
The new Samsung phones are pretty good though with their software, they tried to remove as much bloat as possible.
The touchwiz interface has changed so much, so if you haven't used their use S6 / Note 5 interface, they cant really be compared with the previous interfaces.

Both are good phones, don't think you'd be disappointed with which ever one you picked.

Also Remote Play can be "hacked" onto any phone nowadays by just downloading the APK and installing it manually not through Google Play:
          http://wccftech.com/ps4-remote-play-app-android-device/

        • +3

          @congngo:

I use an Xperia Z2 which runs almost identical software to the Z5, however with older hardware. I don't personally own a Note 5, but a mate of mine has one and it's not quite as responsive once you've installed a few applications, and the multitasking especially starts to stutter (only a few days old). Also has troubles holding apps in RAM once a few have been opened, even with the 4GB installed. This issue seems to be visible on the S6 also. Not saying it's slow, but not quite as snappy as Sony imo. Only my opinion based on my experience.

EDIT: Check this performance comparison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5KgLNhKB5Y
The note 5 seems to load apps faster, however if you switch to the 7 minute mark where the multitasking capabilities are demonstrated, the Z5 seems to hold pretty much all apps in the RAM whilst the note 5 has to reload most.

        • +1

@congngo: I'd recommend trying both in store. The Z5 will probably hold up better in the long run and all round performance, but there isn't really a significant difference. I'd recommend trying them both in a store to get a reasonable feel.

        • @donnot: thank you.

        • @Swift: trying it in store is not the same as it only has a few apps installed. I was after personal feedback. Thanks.

  • +4

This is possibly the only snapdragon 810 phone which won't overheat due to the dual heatpipe design

    http://www.slashgear.com/sony-xperia-z5-using-dual-heat-pipe…

And if you look at the benchmarks, it blitzes every other soc 810 phone by a large margin

    http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/mobile

    • How does it compare to the Note 5 SOC?

      • Note 5 has a Samsung Exynos cpu

        • I know. How do they compare?
          The Samsung one is faster?

        • @congngo: The 810 on the Z5 is slightly outdated. If antutu benchamrks are anything to go by, the Note 5 scored 69,702points where as the Xperia Z5 scored around 57218.

          Higher score = better.

          810 (Z5):
          Dual-core ARM® Cortex™ A57 at up to 2 GHz and quad-core A53

          6 Cores

          Exynos 7420 (Note 5)
Quad Core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and Quad Core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57

          8 Cores

Haha then there is futuremark scores which show the reverse in terms of benchmarks, where Z5 is better than the Note 5.

        • @congngo: In benchmarks, the Exynos destroys the Snapdragon. In real world usage, as long as the Z5's 810 doesn't overheat (and therefore throttle), the Snapdragon will perform great and be very smooth.

        • +1

@lplau: 810 has 8 cores (it has 4 Cortex A57 cores), what you are describing looks like Snapdragon 808 (which is like what you are describing, 6 cores). I wouldn't say 810 is outdated, as 7420 and 810 were released around the same time. Well, at least, they were released aiming the similar time frame, Q1 2015.

In terms of benchmark, I think they differ because of what they count in. AnTuTu I think measures CPU side of things as well as memory along with GPU, and 3DMark seems to be measure GPU signicantly more. From what I've read upon, Sling Shot test results might be due compatiablity issues with Exynos 7420, at least that's what some people is thinking what might be going on.

        • @deanylev: thanks

    • +1

Microsoft Lumia 950XL uses liquid cooling for the Snapdragon 810. Coming very soon.

      • +1

So does the Z5. They're just heatpipes with fluid.

    • The new Lumina 950XL does something similar. I also assume like the 950XL Sony uses the new 1.2 version of the 810 ?

I am thinking of jumping ship to MS. I left their phone ecosystem years ago, went to BB, then Android when it first came out but am liking where MS is heading and not liking Goggle so much, so time to move on I think. I will await some real life reviews on the 950XL

      • 2.1 version*

And yes every phone with an 810 uses it, except the G Flex 2 and the first batch of HTC One M9's

  • +1

Sony after sales care is absolutely abysmal, I won't touch another Sony.

and that's despite their awesome phone cameras and software!

    • +1

Sony is on par with Samsung

      • +1

Not in my experience. My Z1 went back for repair and came back (after 10 days) with its back cover not attached to the back properly and wasn't even close to waterproof - not to mentioned not repaired.

My Samsung S3 on the other hand had an issue and it was repaired and returned within 3 days.

        • +1

My friend's 20-month-old Note 2 with a charging problem got swapped on the spot at a Telstra shop.

I sent in an S4 to fix an intermittent wifi problem. It came back after a week with reflashed firmware but the problem came back. I brought it back and got a replacement on the spot.

I broke the screen on my Note 2. I got a quote ($260) over the phone, sent my phone in, and didn't hear back for two weeks. Got in touch with them, they said there's a shortage of replacement screens, so they sent me a brand new sealed boxed phone with all the accessories instead.

Pretty happy with their service so far.

        • +1

          @eug:

Yep - now someone chime in with a positive and honest Sony experience…

Listen for the sound of distant wind and tumbleweeds blowing across the plains!

        • +2

          @hoxygt: lol touche

        • Hoxygt: I'm quite lucky somehow. Bought a used Z3 under warranty with warranty letter from Optus. The screen got a thin stripe which only appeared on a white screen, plus quite some wear and tear around the frame. I sent it to Fonebiz with the letter and got replaced within 1 week. I don't know how but they sent me a like-brand-new one, same IMEI somehow. The lady who sold this to me got surprised and wished she would have sent it away instead of selling it. But who knows then? It could go wrong in many ways as can be seen in their blog.

        • @Wuuuleee:

Yeah I think what you'll find is Fonebiz gave you someone else's phone (doesn't explain Imei) God I hope I never have to deal with those clowns again!

  • Damn, I think I'm ready to pull the trigger on this deal!

  • +1

The LG G4 would $447? That is more awesome than last deal….@ 15% off?

    That itself deserves another post

    • +1

Yea… so tempted… LG G4… btw, my wife's Z1 is still as awesome as it was when we first bought it, still waterproof. I've actually used it in salt water, fresh water and chlorinated water (pool) and no problems what so ever.

  • +2

After my previous experiences with Sony mobile devices including cracking and phantom screen input … forget it.

    • Oh yes the phantom screen input - what a fun issue that one is, especially when it opens the emergency dial-er!

    • Which phones? My Z2 has been flawless.

      • I think it was the Z1 & Z3 that were particularly bad but if you have a good one, hold it close. They're a great phone if they function properly, if anything goes wrong or you want repair from Sony you'll enter customer service HELL.

  • +1

still happy with my Z3 can't believe Z5 is out already.

    • +2

The Z3+ (Z4) went by very fast. It didn't sell well.

  • +1

Still 3GB Ram size like my Z2, I understand the stronger CPU but I'm not much interested:(

    • +2

      I don't think it'll be good upgrade from Z2.

  • +3

Has the screen cracking and phantom iput issues been fixed with the z5?

    • +2

It always takes 6 months for the gremlins to reveal themselves widely on any phone. If the warranty service wasn't so bad it wouldn't be an issue to find that your shiny new phone has a problem i.e. it would be painlessly fixed, however that's not Sony's reputation.

    • According to Phonearena the screen is now tempered glass ?

      http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Sony-Xperia-Z5_id9550

  • Resistance futile…bought one (the Compact)

  • Do you get an aussie invoice ?

    • +4

No. Its from Taiwan so no aussie invoice for GST Refund or warranty purpose.

  • Do you input the coupon after committing to the purchase?

    • +1

No, just before. You have to add it to your cart first. Then when you view the cart, there'll be a space near the bottom for the code.

  • +3

Gonna hold on to my buck and wait for the Z5 Premium.

But for anyone getting the Xperia Z series, I REALLY recommend you to pick up a protective film for your Xperia, front and back. As a Xperia Z, Z1, and currently Z3 Compact owner, the RastaBanana protective film have never disappointed in each line of the Xperia Z's.

Heres my current Z3 Compact with my back film on.

    • Looks good ! is it like the nillkin tempered glass cover ? I have that on my z3 and sacarficed itself for so many falls ! love it !

Can i just buy RastaBanana Z3 and it will fit the Z5 ?

      • +1

Sizewise, I think it's gonna fit, but the film will cover the camera since Sony has aligned it more to the left.

Judging by the Japanese webstores, the films for the Z5 should be released in around a week or two though.

        • Could you direct on where to buy one so i could keep an eye ? cheers !

        • @Super8Tab: You can buy it from an official dealer here. They don't ship internationally so you will have to get a proxy to buy it for you.

For this, I recommend http://www.fromjapan.co.jp/. Have been using it for a couple of years now, they speak English and have the cheapest fees out of all the other proxys. Happy shopping!

  • -2

Not really a good idea to buy it now.
Android depreciation start to calm down after 6-12 months after publication

Unless if it's a phone that start with i (Don't hate me for this)

  • Mods, can someone edit this posting. White is in stock. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Sony-Xperia-Z5-E6653-32GB-23M…
