I think GOLDARSE would have been better. Like a James Bond movie.

blueasrse kinda sounds like its been beaten doesn't it…

        • or pounded was the word I was looking for…

      • Or Austin Powers.

        • Haha, that's gold member.

      • The man with the golden arse.

  • +4

Noooo why'd it have to be blue :(

    • +2

because black and white are boring

    • +1

and rendering looks ugly compared to the real one, the reflection makes it look better in real life.
Depending on the light source I get colours like blue colour that's similar to blue colour on S4 which looks really nice.

Buy $800 phoone, wrap it in cheap stickers. Uhh, no.

  • Get a huawei mediapad x2 instead.

      Link?

    • Comparing a $145 tablet with a ~$500 tablet, no… just no…
The specs are better on the $500, well that's surprising!

      • What would you say the price buffer is to compare 2 products? Got a +/- figure in mind?

        • Don't you think it'd make more sense to compare things priced similarly?
It's like someone is looking to get a $25K Toyota, and you're telling them to get a $100K BMW… Well no sh!t it's better.
I think <$200 is more appropriate, not $500.

@clse945111: We aren't talking thousands of dollars here, or cars, and $500 is very affordable. But thanks for confirming.

Vodafone branded though, I assume it means Vodafone firmware so upgrades are not direct from Samsung but from when Vodafone is ready (that's what happens to telstra phones)

    • My VF S5 still has Android 5.0 :(

    • You can download the latest official XSA firmware and flash it safely without voiding warranty. From then on out, it will have no carrier bloatware and you'll get updates as soon as Samsung pushes them.

    • Bought a similar spec(gold version) last Fri from them. There are 2 Vodafone apps pre-loaded and that's it. No Vodafone logon during start up - shut down.

New firmware (5.1.1) was pushed to the phone the moment it's connected to Wifi.

    • Vodafone are not much worse than samsung. :P Neither has any idea wtf they are doing software wise.

  • BlueBalls would be a good code for this

  • I want gold please

  • Honest question - does TA get anything out of posting so many deals (or having related coupon codes to specific sites)

Who cares if he does. I saved so much money on shit that I don't even need

        Dear Mr.Arse

thank-you for your endeavours, infact thanks to all posters. some deals I find useful, some not so but that is irrelevant. All deals are useful to someone. Having read the posts on your link with your desire to help people, I think you should seriously consider a tilt at politics. This is the only way to bring about change to a massive number of people ie approving funding to a vaccine that eliminates or minimises a disease or starting a program like the national disability scheme. All worthy causes that make the life of everyday Australians better. You have a passion for helping people. I think you should seriously consider giving a go at representation at a national level as long as you promise to keep making our lives easier, even with something simple as a good deal. thanks.

        • He's got my vote.

  • Seriously, 1GB devices need to die. So many potentially good buys ruined by this.

  • Hi,

i had the G3 and thinking about the G4, but its not much of an upgrade or a new toy. Would this be better? coz if i go the g4 way id have to then put in a 128gb sd card as well so might as well just get this?

i dont need the replaceable battery….

    thoughts?

    • Depends. Do you root and install new ROMs on it? While exynos 7420 is a beast, touchwiz changed ART so much that you'd not be able to use Xposed framework with s6 touchwiz.

Also I've heard that rooting became harder for s6 after 5.1.1. Unless you install CM or other aosp based ROMs, it'd be hard to play around with it.

Since nexus 5x is g4 based. I'd assume that some people will try to port things over from it as well.

      • Samsung also F'd the memory management on Lollipop.

As always, Samsung took a great OS and destroyed it. It makes me sad that so many idiots walk around with Samsung devices thinking they're experiencing the best Android has to offer.

        • Well LMK setting to be exact. I think their software team needs bit of sacking and replacing (It's a talent to be able to even the competition a little when the opponents do not have the advantage in SoC area).

That said, I frankly prefer TouchWiz over stock android on Samsung devices at least, take it however you like.

  • next week it will be $636 because the market will be flooded with them due to the iphone release

      What's an iPhone?

      • not a samsung

        • What's a Samsung?

        • @PainToad:

          Not an iphone, thank god

        • +2

          @inose:
          Shame it's still a Samsung.

          Nexus or nothing.

        • @PainToad:

          Haha… Purist.

          (I have a Nexus too.)

I prefer the s6 over any Nexus. Looking forward to what the Nexus 5x will be, but I doubt the camera nor battery will be anything to brag about

If the price is right though, the 5x will be my next phone. The s6 is too much right now… Heck, even the s4 and s5 are still to much in my opinion.

        • +1

@inose: Got caught up with the Nexus fever too, have a Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 but found myself using Tab S all the time, don't see any advantage with the Nexus except it says it is running 5.1.1 but I don't feel any difference.

        • @stargalaxy:

I've also got a Tab S! 10.5… And yeah agree with you.

I deliberately choose a non Nexus tablet… or more specifically, one that has Multi Window. Samsung and LG wins in this area, hands down.

Nexus in my opinion, though smooth, is very vanilla bland. It only does the job, and leaves you wanting more if you know what's possible with Samsungs and other devices.

        • @inose:
In my opinion samsung skin their phones with stuff that makes it look terrible and run a lot slower than a Nexus, even though the samsung always has the better hardware! So two sides of the coin. I just dont like how samsung tries to make their phones like an android Iphone software wise. The actual outside design and hardware is great, just the software annoys me.

Hence I'm ok with a galaxy with cyanogenmod installed. But the s6 is having issues with having mods made for it, due to its different architecture - Touchwiz is embeded deep into it's soul. Hence I am waiting for that nexus 5x in a few weeks time and will be selling my s6 in preparation for it. The funny thing is I think the nexus will be around the same price as the galaxy due to the exchange rate.

        • @RI4V4N: I've never thought that the Samsung's Touchwiz and Magazine UI looked like an iPhone UI. Then again, my exposure to smartphone went from WP, iOS, then Android and it was after the who copied who died out slightly. I first decided to grab a smartphone when Galaxy S4 was a new thing. I was in the bootcamp when Galaxy S2 got released and since I wasn't allowed to have a smartphone during my service, I didn't care what was happening with smartphones.

I think the game is unfair for Samsung to begin with; Samsung changes a lot of the stuff, like a lot a lot. I think that's one of the reason why Samsung software is resource intensive than other products, they try to run theirs parallel to what is on Android. My personal opinion on what Samsung's doing is, I get that they want to be less tied to Google (i.e. Magazine UI was a lot more like a standalone launcher before Google and Samsung had a fight over it due to how distant it is from the stock Android), but that's costing them a lot.

I frankly think supporting theme on the System UI level is nice (it changes icons on settings as well as keyboard etc), KNOX is integrated in Android since Lollipop (while it has less application for normal users at this point, introduction of Samsung Pay would change that imo). Power saving mode and ultra power saving mode is nice as well. Multi Windows is a very nice feature as well. While not many people would own one, VR support sounds amazing as well. Samsung Music apps decent as well (SoundAlive works alright and I've heard good things about few features like upscaling). Fingerprint scanning is supported outside of the OS as well. Outside of all that, Samsung does tweak a lot of things for their product, at least from what I gathered with Xposed framework and how Samsung ART is different from AOSP ART. Also Camera on CM ROMs tend to be crap compared to stock ones. In short, it's not simple "TouchWiz do what Stock Android does and requires more resources", in my opinion.

Also, I think Lollipop was crap to begin with (RAM leakage issues, Play Services draining the battery, it is riddled with bugs that are still present), which sometimes get wrongly blamed on Samsung (though LMK setting on Samsung Lollipop is ridiculously low, making the multitasking function rather crippled). I know that custom ROM developers have released fixes on those, but my point is, the problems that sometimes get blamed on Samsung was from Google, not Samsung's doing.

Samsung has been adding bits and pieces in tangent to what Android does. I think they are more of hit or miss kind of thing, I frankly like the added featues of TouchWiz (while they do make the phone slightly resource demanding, I don't think it's that bad, especially since I didn't feel the phone was slow while in the power saving mode). CM for me felt fast but it was so unstable and laggy on my old S4 active that I moved to TW based ROM (and I've just moved back to TW KitKat because the TW based ROM I've used had a tweak on sound which I hated).

Also, I think the reason custom ROM for Exynos 7420 is hard to do is because Samsung use a lot of their own stuff. Modem is theirs and it's new (Qualcomm is like Intel of this market and they refuse to sell modem alone, one of the reasons why Snapdragon became popular in first place), 64 bit processer is still a rare thing, there were a lot of tweaks done to the architecture. Not sure whether that relates to custom ROMs though, that said, I've heard that Samsung tweaked around with the architecture a lot and that's why we don't have the Snapdragon 810 with Exynos 5433 (same architecture based, same finFET).

        • @Oversimplified: my bad, it was 2012 that I got sent to the army. So it would've been s3 era. That said I was always under the impression that smartphone was too expensive so I haven't paid my attention to the industry before I finished my service.

  • Jokes aside any thoughts on asus fonepad for the price? Is it suitable for someone's first smart phone?

    • +1

I think of it as a tablet with a 3g radio. Its size would make it awkward as a phone.

It is also quite a old product, so the specs are quite outdated and it was never a high performance device to begin with.

The Motorola phones (Moto E and Moto G) may be a good choice for a first smart phone. Dick Smith EBay has the Moto E second gen for $200 atm, and you can get the $50 Ebay voucher as well if you buy before tonight (plus 2.5% cash back from cashrewards), or you can buy from Kogan (if you are so inclined) for $169 if the Ebay voucher isn't worth much to you.

+1 for the Moto G. My sibling has the original Moto G.

It looks unspectacular. But it's cheap, fast, the display is good, and has the latest Android.

Note that the camera is unspectacular… Shite, but the battery life is spectacular.

An excellent first smartphone that doesn't cost a kidney.

This have a crappy pentile display or full LCD?

  • Man since this is a "bargain", I predict in the next 5 years phones will cost more than cars!

Received mine today, has the dreaded loose home button problem (Google it, there's a billion threads on it). Cant believe Samsung would allow these to leave through QC, the button is raised on one side and crooked, makes a 800$ phone look like it was assembled by a child (maybe it was). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5FoWeDGQZ4

Sending back to Mobileciti, will you guys know how I go with the return process.

    • Physical buttons need to die.

I only buy devices with captive of virtual after going through 5 (yes 5) iPhone replacements.

      • Mobile citi said its "normal". I have a feeling they just couldn't be bothered getting it fixed or doing anything about it. There is no way that button is normal, its crooked.

  • Anymore "arse" coupons?

Would like to purchase a Galaxy S6….. gold, white/blue are my preferred colours.

    Cheers :)
