  • you shouldn't Defrag SSD.

    • I do it once every 3 months, to reduce the potential thrashing if I wasn't to do it. It only runs for 2-3mins anyway..

      • +2

Isn't thrashing the act of the disk head rapidly being moved back and forwards reading data in different places? SSD's do not have disk heads and are therefore immune to thrashing I would think.

Yep defrag on a SSD only reduces its life. Do not do it, most SSD companion software disables the Windows defrag tool.

      • +1

There's no thrashing on an SSD it's a completely electronic memory device.

        • Ok, wrong choice of words. To avoid excessive searching on the drive.

          @HONDA4LIFE:

It doesn't matter as an SSD has immediate file access no where where it's stored on the flash memory. There is absolutely no need to defrag an SSD.

They are not like a hard drive where there's a motor that has to move a disk head all the time over a spinning platter.

        • You can't stop me…hahahaha

        • @HONDA4LIFE:

If you want to wear down your SSD a lot faster, go ahead.

awesome, then I can buy a newer and faster model.

  • Maybe this will allow me to shrink one of my file systems since windows' defrag couldn't prepare the disk sufficiently.

  • Uh oh. The 90's called.

SSD use Trim not defrag, and not official trim program may cause lost of data.

  • You shouldn't have to manually TRIM or defrag storage using a modern OS. If you're running Win 7 or later, defrag is usually scheduled to run once a week, on Wednesday @ 1AM.

  • I'm pretty sure in any case that Auglogics Disk Degrag Pro disables defragging of an SSD to begin with. This program is only useful for a hard drive. Completely useless for any SSD only system.

    • I think it'll just TRIM the drive. As the product description itself reads — it optimises SSD's using a special algorithm.

allows you to pick between four disk optimization techniques, and even has special algorithms for SSDs.

      • Yes the program would just use TRIM. It doesn't actually defrag.
