[AMA] I Am Camping Outside The Apple Store For 17 Days

(2 days to go edit)

The Charity auctions are now live!
Check out all the items (including a 6s and 6s Plus) here -

Hello!

My name is Lindsay Handmer, and yes, I am a little crazy.

Ask me anything about my camp out, or me, or what exactly I am doing out here.

8 days to go!

A little backstory -

I am out here promoting mysparetech.com.au - a brand new website that I hope will make it easier to buy and sell second hand phones, laptops and more to a tech focused community.

I started the website as a side project, when I was unhappy with my other options to sell tech gear. In particular, I aim to continually improve the website and experience based on user feedback - already I have made numerous changes and upgrades in response to suggestions.

The website is currently free to list items, but there will be a small fee introduced down the track.

I am also supporting Mission Australia, with a personal fundraiser through GoFundRaise.

With my (coveted) first in line position, I will be buying an iPhone 6s to auction off for charity, supporting Mission Australia.

The website Finder.com.au has also come on board and is sponsoring a 6s Plus to auction off at the same time.

Right now my website is super new, and is still dominated by my test listings.
I have a special offer (bribe) for OzBargain users - post a listing (free!) and send me your user name through OzBargain or the website contact form and I will set you up with a special membership that gives your account permanent free listings.

When I need a short break, I have been using a website called Airtasker, where you can post up jobs you need done. Through Airtasker I have a range of people I can pay to come mind the chair while I grab lunch etc.

Special thanks to Telstra - especially the 400 George St store - who have charged my electronics while I am out here. And brought me coffee!

Handy links that cover the backstory.

One thing to note -

Ii have been a bit enthusiastic about talking about Mission Australia.

I don't speak for Mission Australia in any way and nor do I represent them.

They are not part of the fundraiser - it's totally personal.

The fundraiser is through a third party website and I don't control any of the donations.

The charity auctions will also be done through a third party website as well.

I have spoken to Mission Australia about my personal fundraiser and they have not (as of yet) raised any concerns.

@Prong: Unless you do a service where you check the product beforehand i.e. the seller sends it to you, you check it, and then you send it to the buyer, I can't think of anything that'd bypass that kind of problem.

I guess you could ask the sellers to post the photos of their recovery running or Samsung Pay running or something like that as well, now I think about it.
Though, I think that can easily be manipulated.

        • @Oversimplified:

Yeah good call on the photos.

Definitely a lot to consider with phones. No wonder so many people seem to just hang onto them or give them to friends / family.

        • @Prong: Yeah, plus, if I want to, it's not impossible to try to recover data off from the phone as well (I don't think I will ever sell my electronics for that reason). I know you could do zero-fill and it's likely that no one will try to recover data from that, but eh, too much hassle for now.

Anyways, yeah, rooting is one problem, another problem is, water damage is usually hard to see on the outside as well.

        • @Prong:

I think you just realised how hard it is to make a scam-free buying/selling website lol.

Yes you could always become the middleman to handle/ensure seller ships product and that buyer gets the product as described. It'll then become… yes quite complex. Ultimately you'll end up becoming paypal :P

Your best bet to make it scam-free is to make it pick up only… a simple classified. The only problem with that is you won't get much users because when they search their postcode…

The solution to your problem is already in the works. But it doesn't really help you :P

          https://blog.openbazaar.org/what-is-openbazaar/

OpenBazaar in my opinion, is the future. It may become the alternative ebay in the near future.

          Buyer purchases tablet from HarveyGorman.
However there are two methods to pay.

          1. Pay seller directly via bitcoin [non-chargebackable]
          2. Pay towards a multisig [two/three people] address. (costs extra 2% or whatever)

If you know that HarveyGorman is a reputable store and decide to pay him directly, HarveyGorman can now ship your product. It's a risk but with reputable businesses, not really that risky.

If you're unsure/worried of the seller's reputation, you select multisig option and pay towards that. Now… what the multisig is, is that it consists of a person [in this case, it could be John] who verifies/ensures that HarveyGorman actually ships you the product. When HarveyGorman ships the product, he will forward postage info like tracking to John. Once I get the product, I can either confirm I got it okay (if I do, HarveyGorman will get his money) or not (John will step in and try to solve the situation - HarveyGorman will not get his money until problem is solved).

John will not be associated with either me or HarveyGorman and he will get 2% (or whatever %) for his time/services.

Sounds ultra complicated but the openbazaar have made it pretty simple to use.

There will also be user feedback and etc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBxdzKOMk9I (demo of their alpha UI).

Basically, if you want your website to handle online/in-person sales, you'll need to have something in-place to stop scams/spams.

If just a basic classified, don't really need to have anything really complex in-place but won't get as much users due to lack of tech in local areas.

        • +1

@plasmoske: I've heard of similar service with some of the ship forwarding services back in my home country.
Though the impression I've got from it was, it'd be hard to implement it in a large scale.

        • +1

          @plasmoske:

Yeah scam free is virtually impossible I think.

But for now the goal is just to do it better than the other options.
Well actually the goal now is to get users…

Also in my experience, scams are only part of what makes selling tech online frustrating.

OpenBazaar looks very interesting - thanks for posting that.

        • @plasmoske:

That project still alive!? The only thing openbazaar will become is the craigslist of child-porn, weapons, drugs and human trafficking. On the bright side, it will be amusing to see the arbitration process between drug addicts.

        • @Tyrx:

It's decentralised, not anonymous… not yet anyway.

Yeah still alive and kicking. Weekly updates etc.

          Not much users. Mostly testing/testers.

          ;)

        • @Prong: Something that you can implement immediately would be a link to IMEI block check

          https://prod.eie.net.au/portal/template/MYMIMEIInquiry.vm

  • When do you usually sleep? Isn't it loud in the city.

  • +1

10 to 11ish, to about 6 or 7am. I did manage to sleep in till 8 one morning!
I keep hoping for rain, so I have an excuse to just snooze in my tent all day.

It is super loud - I am right next to a bus stop and the opal card tap on/off ding will forever haunt my dreams.
Plus there is a range of construction going on that is pretty noisy.

Right now there is a homeless guy blasting out Abba from next to Maccas.

It's also really bright next to the Apple store, and under the street lights.

Fortunately I end up so tired each day (bizarre, since I am sitting around) that I fall asleep really easily and sleep pretty well.

    • most people tap on at qvb and tap off at the apple store on monday and tuesday for their opal bus journeys

      • Yeah it is a pretty popular bus stop.

It helps for exposure for me. But oh so noisy.

About once a day everything lines up and there is about 30 seconds of blissful quiet. I love that time.

    • What has surprised you most from this experience so far, which you didn't anticipate?

      • +2

I probably should have expected it, but I have been surprised by how many people make negative comments (online and in person) without reading information that is right in front of them.

I expected a bit, but it is very frequent - even more so in person.

Of course I get that not everyone will support what I am doing, which is fine.

But come on, if you are going to stop and make negative comments to me in person, at least spend 5 seconds reading the top of the sign, or ask me a question first.

The funniest is when someone is negative, then their own friends pull them up for it and explain what I am doing.

Also when people comment on a news article after having only read the heading.

Half the time I just throw my arms up in the air and yell, 'number one iPhone fan!'.
Or if a friend is around - point at them and yell it.

  • +1

It's been great hearing about your experiences. Thank you.

    • Thanks. I enjoy answering questions. It makes me feel a little less crazy…

  • +1

Applaud your enthusiasm mate. Will come say Hi next week :)

PS: can't PM you, how do I point you to the ad I posted? :D

    • Awesome :) Looks like a fair bit of rain, so if I am hiding in my tent, feel free to yell out.

Send me an email via the contact button on the website and I will hook you up.

  • -7

You do realise this website isn't Reddit?! Why do we have an [AMA] on a bargains website ffs…

    • Because it is interesting to some people? I was invited to do it btw…

    • +3

      @dogboy

This is the seventh AMA we've had here with hopefully more to come. See this thread for more info.

      • Fair enough .. didn't see that thread. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I guess some people are interested in non-bargain related things on the bargain site. Each to their own.

    • Because you're in the forums not the deal part of the site? You do realise you commented on the forums right?

  • Can't be bothered reading the through to see if this has been mentioned already, but surely getting a job and being a productive member of society for 17 days would earn you more money to donate than this ridiculous stunt.

    • +3

      Should have read it ;)

I am a freelance tech writer, so I am working the entire time I am camping out. I have actually picked up some extra work and contacts from being out here.

I am also attempting to launch a new website. So that is my job too.

Fundraising for charity is great, but in no way am I suggesting it's the reason I am out here.

Aside from the fundraiser, and the plan to auction the 'first' phone, I have also got a range of other sponsorship supporting the charity side of things.

We shall see how how it all plays out, but it should be a decent amount of money - more than I could earn in the same time period.

  • What's the best way for businesses to pitch a journalist/writer a story? Mass emails, phone call, Twitter?

    • This is really tough. I get a huge volume of emails each day and often miss stuff.

There is not really any easy way I think.

The best way - have some sort of personal connection with the person… Otherwise -

First - make sure your pitch is awesome, and short.
For me - a phone call will be most likely to get me.
Don't be offended if people are not interested though.
      Follow up with an email.
If I have said I will respond in some way but don't - chase me till I do. I

Other contact, like twitter etc is ok but easily overlooked IMO.

The other issue is that every journalist is different!

  • Best of luck with this. Sounds like a great idea

    • Thanks mate!

  • I reserved a spot to pick up an iPhone 6s on Friday morning between 9-9:30am. How likely am I to get my hands on a phone within an hour of that window?

    • At the George St Apple store?

If you have a reservation, just be here at that time. You should be fine.

That said - I have never done it myself. This is just based on what i have read of others experiences.

    • +1

usually if you reserve, you should be able to get it pretty quick within the time slot, assuming you dont have many questions to ask or require them to set up the migration process for the new phone. Basically rock up with the confirmation print out, they will pick up your phone with the correct size and color (remember to check cause it is a bloody frenzy), and head straight for the cashier or they might bring the credit card machine to you.

      • Thanks! I think I've been there at launch day once before, but I didn't have a reservation. I lined up for an hour or two and it sucked, so I'm hoping not to have to do that again

        • There will be two different queues. One for people who reserved. And the other for those who have not reserved. The ones who have reserved will be let in almost immediately, while the other queue will have to wait around till there are free employees to attend to them.

  • +1

Not trying to be a dick, but wouldn't it be better to work elsewhere for 15 days and use that money on marketing, then camp out for the final 2 days to be the first in line? (to claim all the publicity)

    • Awesome, thanks for the link!

The fundraiser is at $1318 right now, with an especially generous donation from OzBargain.

  • Did Whirlpool closing the thread made your camping even more boring? Unless it wasn't boring to begin with.

    • +1

Yeah I felt bad about that - but I was not linking to anything or even mentioning my website. And was there to talk to people.

Earlier another mod shut me down when I said I was "here for the publicity", but then realised that I was talking about the camping out, not whirlpool.

The mod who closed the thread quoted me saying about how I was here for the publicity, so I am hoping it is a similar misunderstanding.

I was prob posting too much though. But with a thread about camping out, I am the only one doing it so far!

  • Nice website.

    • I made a listing but you don't have PMs available on OzBargain.

      • Thanks mate - any reason why you did not put up a picture?

It actually should not let you post it without a pic!

I reset the defualt pic recently so maybe that caused on issue.

Anyway I will set you up with a special membership, but please grab a pic off the net for the listing ;)

        • I tried but it crashed. Using Safari on iOS 9.

        • And then I had an issue where I'd upload a photo of the phone and it would change to an iPad, weird. It happened twice. I chose a different picture and it worked.

        • @sween64:

Thanks for the feedback. My iOS testing had been pretty small and no iOS 9.

I will head into the Apple store and test this arvo!

  • If you are the first dude in Australia to receive the Iphone 6S and the TV camera is in front of you, are you gonna drop your phone on live national TV?

For anyone who is clueless, google "Perth Iphone Drop"

    • How much will you donate to the fundraiser if I do? ;)

      • Have not decided yet, but if that happens you will see my name on the list. :)

        • I am pretty clumsy so will do my best!

  • +1

Oh and thanks all who have made listing. Your very special memberships will be with your this arvo :)

  • Saw you today.

    That is all.

    • Was I doing anything exciting?

It rained in the morning so I slept in and kept the tent up. It was great.

  • Have you ever touched a boob?

    • +1

Only one :( Here's hoping I can eventually touch a second.

  • -2

Oh My Dear Prong ( won't go further with that one, certainly not to suggest where you stick it ! )
So Prong , are you right or are you Wrong?
Great intuition Lindsay Handmer- but keep thinking -
During all this the nights will be long
While you are planning & tweaking
to achieve the result you are seeking.

    Ba- Boom!!

    • Haha, thanks!

  • -3

I do support your cause. However it is very sad that people line up for days for a new iphone.
Is this where human race is heading, worshiping apple instead of a god….
    Good luck with fund raising…

    • +3

      At least Apple is real.

    • Thanks mate.

Interestingly, I have kinda changed my mind on the lining up. Depending on why people do it of course.

For the adventure and enjoyment of urban camping with friends?

      It's a unique experience.

But yeah not sure about camping out if it is for other reasons!

  • have you decided on which colour and capacity to get?

    • Top spec on both models.

      Still deciding colour.

The Telstra shop guys say Rose Gold is popular.

But does it have the universal appeal?

      Suggestions?

One option is to finish the charity auction in time so the winner can decide on the colour.

But in theory Apple may not sell me whatever colour I ask for!

  • How close have you come to peeing yourself?

    • Not even close!

I have asked random friendly strangers to mind my spot. All my electronics comes with me in my backpack.

I have snuck away from my tent once or twice to pee when no one was around….

But it's under a minute in and out of maccas.

  • +1

Mate, good luck with your venture. I read through most of your comments and answers and you have really handled the questions well…

    • Thanks!

It's such a surreal experience in some ways, so I enjoy talking about it!

  • +1

I did a massive eyeroll when I read the title, then a bit sigh when you started promoting your website, but then I was pleasantly surprised once you started explaining that you are doing it for charity. Good job mate and I wouldn't think of a more fitting cause than people who also camp out on the streets but not by choice. I wish that all iPhone campers would be doing this and then I wouldn't find the practice despicable.

    • Hey I deserve at least half that eye roll still.

But thanks - I am glad my crazy plan can help people, no matter how it works out for me personally.

It's not an original idea either (aside from heaps of people supporting charity).

For example, last year Luke over at Gizmodo put a shout out on iPhone day.

      http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/09/if-youre-in-an-iphone-queu…

  • Marvelling at your commitment mate, well played.

Serious question though, even though we (and the media) know you're camping, given the council requirements for you to camp on the other side to where the line begins, how will you ensure you are number one and some crazed Apple fan doesn't steal your spot? (I haven't actually walked past the spot so not sure logistically what it looks like) Would hate to see someone try to argue with you over it.

    All the very best mate!

    • Thanks, but I have had so much support to make it a lot easier :)

Funnily enough, one of the security guys said something similar to me tonight. He said it gets crazy out here!
Also joksters like to say how they will come get in front of me, since I am not even right next to the door anyway.

Mostly I just hope whoever is second is not a jerk. It would be easy to push in front of me though.
I am 6' 7" tall, and kinda crazed looking after this time on the street. So that could help.

If someone seriously tries to snake my number one iPhone fan spot, then I think mercilessly mocking them will be in order.
Or maybe try and spin it to the media to make the story more interesting?

It will be interesting to see how it plays out!

      • Surely you're now known as being first in line. So even if someone tries to usurp you, come launch you should be fine. Security won't stand for shenanigans.

        • Crazy spot stealing shenanigans makes for a more exciting launch though!

  • gazelle.com

    • Yeah I absolutely want to experiment with this style of the whole buying / selling deal, but it is a very different business model.

But undeniably successful. Also weirdly unappealing to me, if it were my own personal use.

But in my planning documents, I have copious research on this angle.

      • People hold onto devices due to the paradox of choice and also due to the effort required to resell. What gap in the market does your business satisfy to avoid being "me too"?

        • Easier to use to re-sell. Which is a tough call at first, since I have less users, less exposure etc.

In my research the two main reasons seemed to be too much effort (for a variety of reasons) and not willing to settle for less than the best price, for the sake of convenience - like the various buyback sites.

One of my main aims to have a site that will constantly listen to user feedback and innovate to create a very easy to use and up to date service.

        • @Prong: Gazelle's core competency is ease of use both to resell and purchase. Do you send the seller a box for postage and pay for it? Do you guarantee data will be erased?

        • @kennyzzz:

At this stage I am purely a classifieds website, not a middleman If there is demand (and it seems there is) then I will be looking at how best to implement a "we sell it for you" type service.

So as an update to my previous comment. I aim to be easier from a classified front. Buyback sites will always be easier than selling it yourself, but will also offer a lesser price.

        • @Prong: Good luck with it

        • @kennyzzz:

Thanks! If you know anyone who wants an iPhone and missed out on pre-orders - direct them here.
          http://www.clubbid.com.au/club?id=12011

  • I reckon you need your own branded t-shirt :) Hit me up if you like one done free of charge. *My company does custom t-shirts

    • I will take you up on that! I can't PM (not 100% sure why) but can you contact me via my website contact page?

It was actually on my list of stuff to get done, once lining up. Then got changed to a hoodie when I realised how cold it really was.
Then finder came on board and I have been wearing their shirt.

But from tomorrow my much better looking than I fiancee will be joining me (on and off - teacher, school holidays), and she needs to shirt it up for me!

Or maybe she can be the finder billboard and I can get that sweet sweet shirt action for myself.

      • I can't PM (not 100% sure why)

You need to enable PMs in your account. My Account - Edit - Messaging

        • Thanks - I thought I hate but apparently I am just (slightly) incompetent.

  • Very entrepreneurial of you OP. Just out of curiosity though aside from a fresh format and your fee theory what does your site offer that the others don't ?

    • Right now? Few users, items and features :P

The key thing IMO is that my site is focused on growing and improving immediately based on user feedback and need.

I have contacted Gumtree and eBay over the years about this I think are frustrating, or don't work quite right. I have never had a response.

I have already implemented changes based on feedback - and have a list of stuff I am working on!

  • Just dropping by to say good luck with your endeavour, and hopefully you can raise tons for charity in the process plus launch a successful business.

Based on a quick look at your site, I had a piece of feedback: I think the lack of a a footer with typical footer-type links makes the site lose credibility. I usually expect to at least see a copyright notice, and disclaimer / privacy policy / contact us / other typical footer links. It's just something familiar and increases trust in the brand & legitimacy of the business, I think.

    Good luck.

    • Thanks for the feedback. In my mind when designing the website it was always this endless scroll of 'front page' tech products.

So no true end (well, there would be, but with enough products it would take a while).

But this is exactly the sort of feedback I want.

What do you guys think? Footer or no footer?

  • Are you on the dole?

      • Haha, great find!

But yeah, I am a freelance tech journalist.

  • +1

    Hi, great stuff!
What technologies & development langagues did you use for your site?
How did you managed to find the time to develop the site while working? Did it take many months/years?
What hosting company do you use?

    Thanks

    • Thanks :)

The site is based on Wordpress, using a classified theme from PremiumPress.
      http://www.premiumpress.com/

It has been highly modified from there.
When testing options, Open Classifieds was also great. But ultimately I found WordPress easier to do the modifications I needed.

The PremiumPress support team has been absolutely fantastic and has endlessly answered my often dumb questions and fixed bugs (including some I have created) quickly.

In terms of the time, since I am freelance, working from home, I could fit it in wherever possible.
The website has been in development from about the start of the year.
A lot of this is new to me, so I have also got a few freelance web guys who I pay to work on the website.

The website is hosted through Net Virtue, an Aussie hosting company.
      https://www.netvirtue.com.au/

Chosen in part because they have decent prices and 24/7 phone support available!

  • I hope you get publicity which you aimed for. It requires lot of determination to do something like this (even for business purpose). And I really hope you will able to generate some good amount for charity. Next time i walk pass george st. I shall stop by and say hi! Good luck.

    • Thanks. If you just see a tent, I am probably hiding from the rain (or just lazy). Say hi anyway!

  • +1

Hiding out in an apple store line after escaping the mental asylum…. Clever :p

    • Turns out I should have stayed put, all the crazies are out here…

  • Wait, what are you going to do with your new iPhone 6s?
