  • Add "portable".

  • officeworks pm possible

  • We usually get the Samsung EVO 64GB MicroSD for $29 from Shopping express and pcbyte. That's not a deal.
I should also mention that MSY usually sells this MicroSD with the Samsung SD adadptor, which is probably why it is $39. I cannot be sure, but the last time I bought this exact product from MSY, I got the grey SD adapter.

    • I don't know where you live but ShoppingExpress charge $9-12 dollars shipping for a goddamned MicroSD card to virtually everywhere in Australia.

Besides, MSY also have the G.Skill 64GB MicroSD for $24 as well as Kingston/Patriot 64GB both for $33.

      • What?? If you look at their past ozbargain deals, both shoppingexpress and shopping square were selling them for $29, because of tightarse's messages to them.

  • Do WD portable hard drives still come with the bloatware that you can't seem to delete? (apologies, I stopped buying WD a while back, when it was easy to delete the bloatware)

      LOL. What?

      • I can't remember where I read it but someone bought a WD portable HD with bloatware that they couldn't delete. :/

        • +6

I've deleted it without issue and a format certainly does the trick as well but it's been a while, maybe the newer ones are different somehow but I'd still expect a format to solve any preloaded rubbish.

I can't remember where I read it but someone bought a WD portable HD with bloatware that they couldn't delete. :/

There were some models in the WD My Book/My Book Live range a few years ago that had WD SmartWare firmware-embedded onto the logic board inside the enclosure, so it always copied itself back onto the HDD (along the lines of Lenovo's recent BIOS-embedded malware scandal) and there was no way to remove it without taking the HDD out of the enclosure and using it as a bare bones internal drive or putting it inside an aftermarket HDD enclosure.

I remember hearing those stories some years ago though, when the Seagate "Click of Death" hysteria was at it's peak as well.
Haven't had experience with the newer WD My Cloud/My Book/My Book Duo/Passport Wireless series so I can't confirm whether WD is still forcing that garbage on consumers but they are by no means the only culprits (Seagate and Toshiba also like to bundled bloatware on external HDDs).

        • @Amar89:
          Thanks for that!

See! I told you I wasn't crazy! XD

I think this Element is just a bare bone drive without any software. The more expensive Portable Ultra is the one which comes with "bloatware".
      Edit: I am waiting for a deal on a 2.5" 2TB external drive :/

    • +1

Even some of the SSD comes with the bloatware and you can delete them by recreating the partitions.

    • The recent seagate I bought that was on here was full of bloatware as well

i think its just common these days

Do WD portable hard drives still come with the bloatware that you can't seem to delete?

There's a difference between actual bloatware and a bunch of installers for 3rd-rate backup or encryption software that come simply copied onto the drive.

The bundled crapware ("WD SmartWare") used to be quite prolific with the WD My Book/My Book Live range a few years ago and proved difficult to remove, not to mention always mounted itself the moment you plugged the drive in as a VHD and constantly monitored file activity to make real-time backups.

The Elements range never had that bundled with them and although the My Passports come with a bunch of documentation/installers in the root of the drive out of the factory, all you need to do is a 15 second quick format to say good riddance once and for all. All of the My Passports and Elements drives I've had (about 6 at this point) haven't had any difficult to remove nonsense.

    Nothing to see here.

My last WD portable drive died after a year out of the blue. Not really keen on buying WD again.

Price-Match with Officeworks, they deserve your money.

MSY are crooks, they don't abide by Australian law when it comes to faulty and defective goods, even if you paraphrase the Australian consumer law on the ACCC website, they still decline to help you (They always say bullshit to get you to walk away). I have even gone as far as paraphrasing a comment on their own website about what consumers are entitled to, they just looked at me.
Have a look on their Facebook page once in a while, frequently people will post about trying to return a product, unfortunately they choose to delete them to avoid backlash.

Do a quick Google search on how many times the ACCC has come down hard on them. It does vary per store, but they are just as bad as each other. I have gone through hell, and I know of many people that have had it worse that have purchased items ranging up to $500-800.

If you do choose to buy from MSY, only buy products fully backed by the manufacturer's guarantee, ie. Western Digital, Seagate etc that will go that extra mile to pick the item up from you, and have it shipped back to their repair centre at no cost to you.

Officeworks will bend over backwards for your business, and do a good job at satisfying their customers.

neg vote this comment for all I care, but there's no denying the truth.

I think any PC enthusiast or IT-employed pleb worth their salt knows what MSY is and isn't and knows that you only use MSY for low risk purchases where you either won't bother with RMA'ing in the case of manufacturer defects or will deal directly with the manufacturer via their dedicated warranty/support channels.

In the past they were far more of a cowboy outfit who flat-out broke the law with flagrant disregard for statutory warranty compliance and consumer rights but I think anyone who is a frequent purveyor of their local MSY definitely knows they have been forced to change.

My local MSY started putting up flyers after that first big ACCC crack-down informing consumers that all warranty claims should be dealt with through the retailer (i.e. them) after the first 12 months of purchase and that refund or replacement was guaranteed in all cases of major failure.

I know of a friend who bought a $2K build from MSY just last week and had two DOA parts (PSU + Motherboard) replaced with brand-new ones in about 10 minutes after they did a quick test.

In the world of consumer electronics and computing hardware you'll always hear polar opposite tales from the most vocal proponents of amazing experiences with certain vendors or manufacturers and absolutely terrible experiences with those very same names; I've really stopped listening to both extremes of the opinion spectrum in reviews/forums/tech articles and just gone on statistical weighting.

MSY do business in the millions on an annual basis and of all those transactions, we hear how many grievances? Maybe 5-8% I would wager, at best.

I don't like MSY anymore than anyone else who values consumer choice and parity and good service but they are a necessary evil given Australia's highly anti-competitive retailers.

I have no issues with MSY. Their RMA is quite breeze as long as it is still within warranty and the faulty item is not your fault.

    • +1

Had my billion dual band not working on 5G, RMA'd and replaced with new product

    • Have returned several items in the past year alone, all without a problem. Items were exchanged or repaired without a drama. I go to the Slacks Creek store in QLD. Maybe it's only particular stores that are an issue.

    • Try and return an item at the Brooklyn store.

I had 2 graphics cards fry and a motherboard replaced.. and they did it with no issues.. though I had to pay $60 for diagnostics the second time around as the graphics card was getting screwed up by something and I count figure out what it was.

  • +5

have dealt with MSY for years now. first in Ultimo, now at my local.
have 100s of receipts - a big stack - all from MSY.

have never had one problem returning faulty goods. and have returned many!
one motherboard, Gigabyte, i returned after 2.5 years (3 year warranty).
one time i returned an expensive Nvidia gaming video card, and guess what? MSY gave me a loan of same video card till repair comes from manufacturer - really did not expect this from MSY.

maybe its how you approach them? have no idea why so much bad vibe about MSY

  • are the drives regular 2.5" satas inside? thinking of buying one for my ps3.

    • +1

Nope. They have their USB connectors soldered on. That's been the norm for Western Digital 2.5" external HDDs for some years now.

      • damn that sucks, cheers for reply

  • When I click on the portable hdd in the link I get redirected to this page where there is no Portable HDD:

    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/452-deal-of-the-day

Searching the site shows nothing either: http://www.msy.com.au/qldonline/search?search_query=wd+1tb&s…

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong.
