Bing Lee currently has the Samsung 500gb S2 portable HDD on special until 26th.
All stores only have black in stock and the RRP is $149.00 with actual unit price of $96.00
so essentially they will sell at $96.00 which is an excellent deal in my opinion.
A normal 500gb sata drive at MSY costs $100.00 so at $96.00 (negotiated) for 500gb and
external casing with free software and carry pouch can't go wrong.

  • Yep, saw this in my local Bing Lee a few days ago. It was ticketed $99 in my store and they had heaps of them. Was tempted but couldn't justify yet another HDD purchase!

  • "…..Samsung 500gb S2 portable HDD on special until 26th."

I doubt it .. Im sure you can still walk into a BL after the 26th and negotiate (or just ask) for that price , and they'll still give it to you (assuming they have stock) .

Just be aware this is not an ordinary hdd ie dont expect to take it out of he case and have the same interface as your laptop hdd it doesnt

    otherwise a good deal

    • -2

why do you think that? do you have any evidence? or are you just assuming?

    • -2

      what are you talking about?

everest and all the tools out there says it's SATA

      i have one of these…

It's strange but apparently this drive has the USB interface on the HDD itself. See here for further info - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/20448

Samsung’s exclusive USB On-board technology reduces the length of the HDD, making the compact external drive smaller than a passport.

So yes, proprietary interface. Mikinoz is doing the right thing by warning you guys.

    • Thanks for the heads up, this is good to know in case you were planning on buying it and pulling the HDD out to use elsewhere in the future

    • Thanks Mikinoz.
I was planning on getting this for my laptop.

    • why do ppl wanna change the HDD inside? doesnt it void the warranty?
if you're gonna do that often then get a 2.5" HDD enclosure from ebay

Iomega Prestige Portable 500GB is $99 on SI
so its either Samsung or Iomega for me…

lucky i didnt get it on Sunday! :D

    price in title please

  • if we're after a bigger capacity drive, check out the WD My Passport Essential SE 640GB drive @ Officeworks for $129. Refer to previous post for more info: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/20844

it's a bit moot about opening it up because Samsung glued the case shut

    here's mine:

    • Is samsung using seagate drive now or has it been that way ?

      • Yeah that's odd seeing as Samsung make their own drives.

  • is this only in store?

I need one of these drives and theres no binglee around here..

  • yes in store only. you have until the 26th so i'm sure you will go somewhere before then
where there will be a bing lee close around.
Or see if any other stores in your area are willing to price match

    • +2

slightly hard for me to get to bing lee when there isnt any in QLD… and no one will pricematch it because its not a local store.

  • MSY in queensland has the Iomega Prestige or Imation Apollo 500gb for 119.00 each.
Costs more but could be your other option if no other choice

    • alright thanks, ill keep an eye out for someone doing a special like officeworks

  • jamussssssss

hey ptfff … if you really want this I can get it and post it to you.

  • Just a quick note.

The drive is a native use drive, i.e. it doesn't have a sata interface. Therefore you can't crack it open and plug it in somewhere else. I am not sure if it can do any low level stuff, if there are errors with the drive. E.g. a low level format.

However, it is smaller than other drives…

I was thinking about getting one post boxing day at Bing Lee, when it was 99.

Btw, the hdd prices are dropping quite rapidly. In the US, 500gb 2.5in drives are as cheap as 60-65USD around 70AUD. So expect the prices to follow suit.

  • Good price but I can't seem to find info about this drive on Samsung AU website?

  • Product Description

  • I bought one of these to backup family photos & videos. (side note: remember the motto: backup or f*ckup)

To save people some time, before using the drive, format it as NTFS. It is delivered formatted FAT32, which cannot handle files bigger than 4G.

  • I want to buy a portable hard drive to hook up to my tv through usb as well as up to the xbox. Will this work fine with my xbox and tv?

What is the better buy, this hard drive or

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/20844

    • purely a space and budget question as they will both work

      bigger is better

  • I went to bing lee to day, and got the last one in at Erina :D although the guy did reckon he had more coming in.

  • got 1 today, but 1 PC doesnt recognise it (Blue light kept on blinking) and the other freezes once i open MY COMPUTER.
    PS3 is fine.
sigh.. do i have to go to the same shop for an exchange? or any Bing Lee will do?

    • sounds like its a usb power problem, more than likely with your pc , seems to me you are running a usb 2.0 device in a 1.1 port.

is your pc/laptop new or old, old being more than 12 months

may be able to change the setting in the bios or easier get a cable with 2 x usb plugs and plug them both in should work after that unless its faulty

  • Just got this one today … price go back to normal $145 but just mention the promo and they can still do it for $99
