Is there a hardware difference with a quick charge 2.0 cable from a standard usb2 cable? Besides I guess thicker guage wire.

    • +1

Higher AWG, better connectors, proper shielding and charging at a faster rate to name a few. You'll find some cheap microUSB cables only charge very slowly and some don't even do data. A lot of them will break easy as well.

      • +3

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge lower AWG indicates wider diameter, lower resistance, and faster data transfer and charging.

If these have higher AWG, does that mean these are not as good?

        • +16

It means that I've got my facts backwards.

Aaand I can't edit my comment to fix the mistake.

There isn't actually a quick charge 2.0 cable standard. Unfortunately there isn't really a standard USB 2.0 cable either!

What differentiates this "standard" USB 2.0 cable from cheapo cables is the 20AWG wires inside. From the specs it's 28AWG/2C 20AWG/2C which means the data wires are 28AWG and the power wires are 20AWG.

Ironically, QC 2.0 was developed to allow fast charging with thin cables. With non-QC2.0 devices, charging voltage is 5V at usually a max of 2A, although some phones can only do maybe 1.6A.

Long thin cables are unable to carry that amount of current. So to allow fast charging with long thin cables, QC 2.0 increases the voltage and lowers the current - that allows the same or more power (the product of voltage and current) through without the associated losses. The S6 charges at 9V, 1.67A. The lower current means you can charge your phone more quickly with a thin cable, compared to charging at 5V.

That is also why mains power is sent through transmission networks at very high voltages before it hits your local substation transformer which steps it back down to 240V.

Calling it a QuickCharge 2.0 cable might not really be accurate, but it would probably be easier for people to remember instead of "20AWG USB cable".

The cables look similar to Anker cables. They could very well have come from the same factory. If so, they're pretty good!

      • That's why I said they were made for QC 2.0 ;)

I know that Anker's chargers come from the same factory, so I'd be fairly confident in saying the same about these.

        • +2

That's why I said they were made for QC 2.0 ;)

That's a bit misleading as QC 2.0 was designed to work with thinner cables. :)

20AWG wires will actually benefit non-QC 2.0 devices more than QC 2.0 devices.

        • Looking at the pics, these look close to identical to the Anker cables I grabbed recently from MacFixit, and they've held up well so far.

        • @kapone: Same factory.

      • +2

The cables look similar to Anker cables. They could very well have come from the same factory. If so, they're pretty good!

Not just similar, they're absolutely identical if you put them next to each other. They also measure out the same (coarse measurements; I don't really want to cut one apart yet) and feel the same.

Also worth mentioning is that resistive losses (voltage drop) in the cable is dependent on two factors: the resistance (cable composition and cross-sectional area, and the length) and the current travelling through it. Voltage drop is given by V=IR and power loss is given by P=I^2R (derived from P=IV and V=IR). That's the technical/physical explanation for thicker cable gauges being able to carry higher currents: if you push too high a current through too thin&long a cable the voltage the phone receives would be too low.

Since the voltage drop has no direct relation to the actual voltage, it should be obvious why increasing the voltage can pass more power without increasing losses. The only problem is you now need explicit support from the phone, or you risk damaging it… that's where all the fancy signalling comes into play.

      • watts = volts x amps, the higher the voltage the more power a wire can carry

        • If anyone wants to calculate for themselves, there's a bit more info here:

And if anyone wants to take apart their cable and measure the thickness themselves, there's some info here, along with photos of the wires in the Tikbro 24AWG cables.

        • @eug: I can't reply to that one now, but it's actually not quite right. The S4 (i9505 model) can draw up to 1900mA under certain conditions… I've so far been able to consistently reproduce this only when the screen is off (either plug in, turn off screen, wait undetermined amount of time, or turn off screen before plugging in in which case it'll stay 1900mA for some seconds even after the screen turns on). Otherwise it can be 1200mA (typical) or 1300mA (sometimes). Not too sure what causes that difference.

Currently I consider any cable capable of supplying that 1900mA consistently to be a decent cable, with extra points for good connector design (compact, sturdy, good 'click'). At some point I want to get a proper programmable load tester, but still waiting on a deal for that! (they run a good $200+ usually, so… yea)

        • @elusive: Oh that wasn't the main point, but yes since then I've tested my S5 (never had an S4) and I can pull more.

On my Anker charger I can only pull a max of 1.38A. The charger's voltage drops to 4.8V.

With a Samsung 5.3V charger, I can pull 1.75A. The voltage drops to 5.09V.

So not all good chargers are made the same!

  • Quality?

    • See my reply to superroach

    • I have one from a previous deal. The cable itself is very thick and seems to be good quality. The connectors aren't as solid as some of the other cables I have though.

      • Better than Anker?

        • +1

From empirical testing at 2A charge rate, I'd say about the same.

From a side-by-side comparison of sheath thickness and connector design, I'd say absolutely identical, to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if they were from the same factory (with a different logo stamped on it).

    • Top quality. I've often gotten better results with Anker (same as these) cables than manufacturer ones.

        • @pjetson: and I guess it wasn't really a 80 day trip around the world? :P

      • Still waiting for them to "send" that Android TV I ordered way back on the 13th of July.

        • As I have said countless times. The first 500 were sold out and went to presale until Aug 18 for the next 270 orders. After that all remaining would be sent out. You were obviously one of the 770+.

  • Do you have deal on lightning cable?

  • +1

    thanks op, bought one

  • +1

Thanks OP was looking for some cables, should do the job.

  • +2

Could you come up with another package deal together with the tronsmart 5 port charger ? :) then you got a buyer here!

    • +1

Still waiting for combo car charger + 3 port charger + cables

      • +3

Already had that deal here, but I might be able to get another deal on it… perhaps when the AU versions are out.

        • +1

Thanks for that I thought it was expired. Also get free express shipping

        • +1

Is there news of an AU version coming out?

        • +1

@bargainsniper: Yep. After the success here, Geekbuying are going to stock them very soon.

        • +1

Cheers, got one there, since it was that cheap I took DHL shipping :)

        • @Clear: what do you mean by Australian version? Is it just the cable to the power socket that would be different?

        • @aussie28: I assume one using an Australian power plug…

        • @aussie28: There will be wall chargers out that have an AU plug.

      • Same but 5 port charger. I didnt see when an old deal got updated to include the full pack.

    • Saw this on aliexpress. I'm hating myself for buying this 10 days ago for US$27
      http://activities.aliexpress.com/tronsmart-quick-charge.php?…

      • Stick it on eBay or Gumtree. They're always buying Android boxes with 200% markup, so they'll likely buy those for a little bit extra ;)

  • So what do I need for quick charging to work. I have a QC enabled phone do it need just the cable or just the adapter or both ?

    • +1

You need a QC 2.0-enabled phone and a QC 2.0 charger. The usb cable that came with your phone, or any good quality cable like this one will work.

      • Yep, powerblock is the important one.

Checking precisely, my S6's charging block has 9V/1.67A & 5V/2A as outputs, whilst my Note 3 block only has 5V/2A.

  • +1

I got the 5 port 54w charger and the 6 pack of these cables and they are really good. I got the $12.95 single cable from dicksmith for around $3 and it was hopeless would not charge faster then the battery was draining. Went through 3 of them with the same results.

  • +1

    looks pretty good imo.

nice selection of lengths, and a brand-name cable is almost always better than a generic one :)

  • +1

    Airmail ( 30-40 Business Days) :D

    • +2

I ordered mine on the 29th July, took almost exactly 3 weeks to arrive with the free option. Pretty typical for China airmail.

      • Yeah for sure, just thought it was useful info to have on the page here heh :)
Figured it'd be more like 3/4 weeks if your order is lucky to be close to their scheduled dispatch.

    • Airmail is 30-40 days? Must be sent by a guy on a hang glider.

  • I just wish you could support applying the same coupon with a quantity > 1, and applying multiple coupons over one cart. That would let us take advantage of better shipping options for larger orders, and might even save you some trouble since you can pack everything in one bag/box.

I've also got entirely too many USB cables at this point :P Still, a good deal on great cables.

  • Have you got any coupon code for Tronsmart Qickcharge 2.0 4 Port USB car charger? Thanks.

  • Noob question, so non QC compatible gadgets would just, in theory, experience faster charging using these cables?

    • Correct. A lot of cheaper ones are flimsy and slow charger. This comment about the cheap DSE cables is an example.

    • +2

I guess the simplest way to explain is that these remove a restriction some cheaper cables may place on the max charging rate. It won't let you charge faster than the phone and charger are capable of.

Using the ol' water analogy, you're widening the pipe between the source and the sink. But flow rate won't increase if the source can't provide enough, or the sink can't take more.

The actual improvement you see will depend on how bad your current cable is, compared to everything else in the system. It could be anywhere from 4x (500mA => 2000mA) to 0x (2000ma => 2000mA, 500mA => 500mA, etc.). Generally, a good reference is the cable that came with your phone: those normally perform as well as the phone is capable of. If your current (cheap) cable isn't any worse than the original cable, this'll make no difference. If it's noticeably worse, this will help.

QC2.0 tries to bypass the charging limit of poorer cables in a different way. A better cable will still have some effect, but not as much since QC2.0's max current tops out slightly lower. @eug has a good explanation in a comment near the top.

      • Thanks guys. Bought just to try it out. Will let you guys know my experience with it.

  • 20AWG cables are all I use these days.

  • Is this the same? https://www.google.com/search?q=Tronsmart+High+Speed+Micro+U…

Overall the reviews on Amazon are quite positive, but some complain about broken or bent connectors. @Clear: have these issues been addressed?

    • Same ones, but a newer batch, so you should hopefully not have that issue.

  • Thanks bought 5. Been after some good cables for all my Android devices

    • You've got 30 devices or just playing it safe with spares?

      • about 9 but somehow a lose cables like socks!

  • is the addition of "JV" in the coupon code intended to avoid negative votes from 'you know who'

        • omg you stole my picture :O

You stole mine! I license mine from JV.

        • @Maverick-au: Too bad. My upside down JV comments came first. At least make yours sideways :P

  • Tempted… But I think my next phone will have USB Type-C. Guess I'll stick to my current lot of Ankers…

    • If your next phone is QC2 then GeekBuying has a Tronsmart type c charger.

      • I would be able to charge my phone with my current 5 port tronsmart won't I? I just need a USB A to USB Type-C cable.

  • +1

How is this compared to the Tikbro brand OP?

    • +2

Charges faster. Wasn't impressed by Tikbro. Just read the reviews of this or Anker on Amazon, these are high quality cables which won't be a limit on any phone.

    • +1

stay away from Tikbro- they are hit and miss/ over-rated.

  • +1

Good deal OP, but have no need for the short 30cm ones in this pack so instead got the one that includes 3x 1m + 3x 1.8m for $14.14.

  • Hey OP. Thanks for these deals. I've bought the 4 port car charger and 3 port wall charger recently.
Any deals on quality 2 metre lightning cables at all?

    • Geekbuying doesn't stock many and this is the only certified one I could find. I can ask for a deal on that one if you want.

  • I've signed up, but your site won't accept my password :(

I've reset the password 2 times now. Really frustrating.

    • Having exact same issue, hopefully doesn't meant we miss out!

      • +1

I'll pass it onto Geekbuying. If it's not sorted before expiry I'll get an extension on the coupon.

        • Hi, thanks for the reply. I was able to login just now and complete my purchase.

        • @happykamper: Awesome. They must have fixed it.

    • Try it now.

      • Hi :) Yeah it works now… but the coupon is expired!!! hahah :(
Anything you can do? I was ready to buy!!! Thank you :)

        • I'll see if I can get it extended.

        • @Clear: Any luck on getting the coupon extended?

        • +1

@pjetson: I don't get responses until late afternoon due to timezones etc.
