I have been on the lookout for the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition - since my 5th edition became obsolete.

http://www.apastyle.org/manual/ - this manual is useful for students and tutors in showing how to reference and format to APA style (with examples). APA style is frequently used across a wide range of schools (and growing..) and is particularly popular within areas such as psychology, education, business, social sciences and law. There are a lot of books that try to simplify the APA style down for students, but every book I've worked at has had a few deficits when compared to the source manual. Further, they are targeted only at report writing and essay writing and thus have limited scope. On the upside, these books are usually a lot cheaper but with an APA manual at this price I feel that students would really benefit from going straight to the source, especially if you ever think you'll need to write a dissertation or you mark student papers.

The RRP that this sells for in the major Australian is $79.00 but can usually be bought overseas for around $40-45, but this is by far the best price I've ever seen it. The Abe Books reseller in this case seems to be Australian, and my copy arrived in less than a week. Overall quality good, with the book marked as having been printed in the USA; 2011 printing.

+1 for a solid deal, not many people need this but this stuff is hard to get!

    • Thanks, I completely agree. I was very happy to get one at this price and I hope others who need a rather specialist APA source - can take advantage of this offer too.

but this stuff is hard to get!

perhaps if you don't have internet access it is…

      otherwise : https://booko.com.au/9781433805615/Publication-Manual-of-theā€¦

Yes JV, this text is easy to find online - but like many specialist texts it is hard to find with a discounted price (I regularly try..)

*unless a new version is coming out :)

@ Raif. Thanks for the post. Have you noticed any of the errors that were reported in the reviews on Amazon?

The APA website seems to confirm that there were errors in the first printing.

"Check the copyright page, opposite the Table of Contents. If it is a second printing, the second paragraph will read 'Second printing: August 2009.' If it is the first printing, this information will appear on the last line, near the bottom of the page."

The publication date in the hyperlink is 29 July 2009, which appears to be the first printing. Are you able to let us know which printing you received?

        • +1

@lumiere: Hi Lumiere, unless it is a new version - every print will reference the 2009 original even if there are minor fixes in subsequent prints. As noted in the last line of the original post - the version I received was from the 2011 printing (5th printing) :)

        • @Raif: Thanks for your help.

        • @lumiere: Publishers normally make Errata available free of charge; does APA?

I don't see why APA doesn't make this "style guide" available free of charge, as well as its Errata.

        • @Raif:
FWIW, its Electronic Edition is dates May 2013,
          & has ~291 pp.

        • @IVI: Yes, I believe so. However, many reviewers were critical of the number of errors. It would be preferable not to have to refer to errata, which is probably why many of the recommendations were to avoid early printings.

  • Thanks OP, I needed one of these. :)

Great, my work here is done :)

  • Is it good? Looks like it's even cheaper compared to Amazon Kindle.

    • Is it good?

The movie was great, so I'm thinking of getting the book…

Not necessary, but highly valuable when you're stuck on a manuscript in my opinion. Time to upgrade to the 6th ed. Thanks OP.

plus 1 for abebooks and psych text books. been buying mine there for the last 6 years. usually half to a third of what the uni coop book shop sells them for.

    • I've found Amazon to also have some great deals lately on really particular psych books. I got a book by Perkala on Consciousness there for $15 shipped - new -and everywhere else wanted $240+. For the more generic texts I still find book depository or wordery to be the cheapest..

      • any others? How are you searching for these?

I'm after a some Carl Rogers stuff….just for a bit of general reading but also any good psych books. The more I have the more I impress myself ;-)

        • ISBN is the best way to search.

        • @altomic:
          Thanks Altomic

Doesn't that require knowledge of a specific book? I'm more looking for general books but with a discount

        • +1

@slipperypete: are you just after a general psychology book?

this was a text book that I used in first year that was handy and gave a more than general over view of psychology.

There is also this book by westen that I'd also recommend.

          both are about $10 delivered.

        • @altomic:

Hey thanks for going to the effort

          Much appreciated

  • Or you can use your uni referencing guide for free

    • true, don't know why you got negged for that. Plenty of online stuff as well

Whats the advantage of the book?

Would buy for sure if there was a better reason than free resources

    Jeez I hate APA formatting!

I cannot imagine the number of hours I have lost to this task.

Good price for the guide though

    • +1

or the great essay that lost marks for petty APA formatting errors?

    • +1

Having used/marked plenty of formatting styles - I think APA is clear, balanced and well organised. That said, formatting itself can be a nightmare process regardless of the style used. :)

    • Only psychologists could come up with a style that requires such a lengthy guide!

      • They probably are compensating for something :P

      • A bit harsh, the guide is 50% examples :) - I feel like you're trying to punish the APA Manual for being comprehensive. For most people, downloading Mendeley or downloading a quick referencing guide will do. One of the issues with Harvard is that it lacks any sort of comprehensive, integrated manual.

    • So, is it the only format out there? if not, write for others.

      • Publishing in journals means you have to format according to the journal's style. APA is common in my field. Also studying meant that APA featured prominently

      • Many psychology departments in Australia, I assume, uses this. At least my school does (most of the time, the formatting takes up a small but significant portion of the mark).

  • I've received mine today, the paper quality was of the penguin $10 book quality… Is this normal (just checking just in case I've got a "fake or bootleg one")?

    • I can only compare it to the quality of my 5th edition and the paper feels the same but the printing quality looks worse. I'll scope out the version at the Uni Bookshop and see if this is a common theme.. having bought an Indian version of the DSM-V - I feel the paper looks better, but the printing looks on par..
