Not really comfortable passing on my Passport or License number for $20

        • Is someone having your license number bad? I mean, It's 8 digits, and the first 4 digits is the postcode… And your expiry.. is that dangerous at all?

        • +1

          @18:

Maybe its me but i dont think passing on my personal info (name, addy, license number , etc) to a company is worth $20, when im 90% sure that it might be sold to a marketing company sometime in the future.

        • +16

@easternculture: As far as I know, they are required by law to get this information before giving out sim cards. Technically I think this is correct.

        • @hypie:

          yep true.

        • +3

@easternculture: you are one tinfoil wearing paranoid guy.

        • +4

          @holden93:

My privacy is priceless. I will only give out my details when its an absolute necessity

        • @easternculture:
Does that include your home address? How else would you be scoring all those bargains?
Unless you have your work address for that?

        • @ATangk:

Parcel Locker, one personal and one business

Before Parcel Lockers, i had a PO Box

        • @hypie:

As far as I know, they are required by law to get this information before giving out sim cards.

I've bought lots of sim cards over the last couple of years at Coles and Woolies and have never been asked for any ID.

        • @holden93: If you're not paranoid you're not paying attention ;-)

        • -1

          @hypie:

That's is incorrect many places that sell sims don't even ask for any ID.

        • -2

@4NTiNWOW4RRiOR:I dont see a reason to give a shit if they sell my info as long as i don't get calls of people trying to sell shit (i don't) then i really don't care.

        • @holden93: Fair enough- 2 types of people I guess.
          Edit: I didn't neg either

        • -1

@4NTiNWOW4RRiOR: no worries people neg for absolutely no reason.

        • @DEvok:

That doesn't necessarily mean that what were doing was "Legal". I was under the impression that, until recently a AMPTA form had to be filled out prior to purchase http://www.amta.org.au/pages/Pre-paid.ID.Forms. This has changed (2015) and now no information is required to sell the sim card, you only need information at the time of activation.

        • @DEvok:
          Sorry, you are 100% WRONG.
Just because they don't ask for ID does not mean they are not legally obliged to. It's just the counter staff being incredibly lazy.
          Again, you are 100% WRONG.

    • +1

I just made mine up as I couldn't be bothered to go get my wallet.

      • +2

        That's called fraud

        • no

        • +3

          @daxington:

providing false information when it is required by law is FRAUD. It also carries a penalty up to $50k or 12 month prison

          http://www.findlaw.com.au/articles/5038/false-or-misleading-…

        • -3

          no

        • I always believe it's not fraud if no financial gain.

        • +7

          I'll plead lazy.

        • @easternculture:

Oh boo hoo. Just bullshit the information.

Don't worry, you can still access OzBargain in jail…

        • @jv:

Secret agents use prepaid phones with BS identities all the time. Why can't we?

    • Exactly. Why can't we just provide I'd on activation?

      • +1

because one of the purposes of these free promo's is collecting personal info which is worth more than $20 to these companies for marketing purposes.

        • For many free promos "yes", but this is a Telstra owned company who is trying to move people from competitors by giving them "the first hit free".

Saying that, your personal info can be stolen from anywhere nowadays (looking at you Vodafone, had attempted ID theft as a result of an offshore employee harvesting customer info).

        • -1

          @kapone:

Thats why im with amaysim (aussie Customer service)

        • @easternculture: Having worked in a call centre, I can tell you that dodgy staff still exist in Australia. The difference being the degree of oversight is a bit better (know of idiots working for a bank who reset passwords to steal money from customers via IB, got caught out almost instantly, complete morons).

In the case of Vodafone however, after spending a week trying to contact someone at headoffice to advise them that I had proof that my wife's details had been harvested from their systems (there were mistakes with some details that I knew only existed on Voda's systems), I got nowhere. Several months later it's in the newspaper that details were harvested on a large scale.

        • -1

@kapone: incorrect, it's not Telstra owned.

        • @astrodude: My bad. Based on experience with customer service, who transferred me back and forth between Telstra staff I assumed they were bought out by Telstra, but now see that they are just another MVNO.

Does better explain why the website is pretty crap (the recharge pages aren't responsive on a mobile, despite the main homepage pages being mobile friendly, pretty bad oversight for a mobile company).

      • +1

If it's free, you're probably the product ;-)

    • +2

      this worked fine
      Licence number 00000000
      State of Issue NSW
Date of Expiry 1 Dec 2016

      • +1

Only prob is that you have to show the id on delivery and they need to match.

        • pretty sure the aus post driver is smarter than that.

        • @tuzii:
          Just slip them 5 bucks

    • +1

How are you activating all the Telstra $1 simcards without ID?

  • Nice find. Hope it works.

  • +3

This will relieve some pain inflicted by nicois, he should post it on whirlpool to make up with the angry mob.

  • Brilliant. Many thanks!!

  • +4

For all who against idea of providing correct ID card:

"Note: When taking delivery of your purchase, you'll need to show the same ID you used to order online, for security reasons"

  • Thanks I got one,
How does it work the 500mega Sunday bonus?

  • Nice deal! Will pass though, I've found Telstra's rates to be VERY expensive.

    • +1

      they have a capped plan.

      • And they're expensive.

        Capped doesn't equal cheap.

        • I don't find it expensive. it's $40 a month for unlimited calls, txts and 3GB of data. how is that expensive.

and it's BOOST not Telstra. they price differently

        • @edwinlin88: He's discussing Telstra.

        • @Utopian: he's passing the deal because he finds Telstra's rates to be expensive. This is not a Telstra deal.

    • +3

Telstra has always been, and will always be expensive. Boost however exist to try and get back pre-paid customers who got wise to Telstra's ridiculous rates.

With Boost I pay $40 / month, get unlimited calls and SMS, a decent amount of data (with a free gig to use each Sunday, handy for letting the little guy watch some YouTube while I have long lazy brunch somewhere), and I get Telstra coverage. Only real loss is 4G, which is something I can live without given the price difference.

In the regional area I live in, even Telstra reception can get spotty at times, and outside of the middle of town, Optus and Vodafone are useless (not to mention Optus suffering several day long outages on a few occassions).

For now, for my needs, Boost is as good as it gets, even if it does mean putting money in Telstra's pocket.

  • +1

  • Cheers op just applied

  • Thanks ccwwayne!! :)

  • So sad missed out.
Literally went into JB yesterday to see if they had half price special, but no luck, then miss this. Boooo

  • -1

so this promotion just kinda 'popped up' yesterday at about 10pm and you're telling me that 2500 users quickly signed up in that amount of time to when I'm posting this morning just about 6am in the morning? why such a short promotion boostmobile? I'm sure those people who signed up may have 'double-upped' and signed up for more than one account. just the sort of promotion to invite fraudsters and what not… feeling a bit hard done by!

    • Ozbargain is a large community with significant active participation and users. Unfortunately, if you snooze you lose. I did too.

    • It was on OzBargain last night, but the promo was posted on Boost fb last Friday. This is not OzBargain exclusive in case you haven't figure it out.

  • That went quickly :(

  • Just received an email,

    Security check
You'll need to provide valid ID (e.g. driver's licence, passport) to the courier to complete the security check. For additional security you’ll need to provide the same photo ID you used when you purchased online. Once the courier confirms your photo ID you can take delivery of your order.

Goodluck to those who faked their ID .__.

    • +2

I have ordered a few of these previously (at different addresses) and the couriers never asked to see my ID.

    • Will be interesting, but recently on ABC's 7.30 - a Union rep stated subcontracted AusPost drivers "aren't paid enough to care!" YMMV

  • Dispatched using Star Track.

  • Just received mine, and yes Star Track need to check driver license

  • if im at work and i pass the driver license to my parents, can they still take it after showing my driver license?

  • Mine arrived today and he said "ohh ir drivers licence number doesn't match" still gave it to me as he delivers to is all the time.
