Some fairly scathing reviews out there about Panda.
"Mislabeled download links, one-line "Welcome" emails—in Spanish, no desktop shortcut for Panda (but one pushing you to buy more software), and no default firewall installation were just the start."
"Panda continues to score low on our list this year. Each year, Panda attempts a change in direction, but despite their efforts, its performance doesn't seem to budge."

    I'll keep my 5 bucks.

It is worth pointing out that Panda has consistently scored very high on av-comparatives
I would take personal reviews with a grain of salt, the professional reviews seem to state it performs well and catches more than most of the other solutions out there.

    • Antivirus software can score very well at blocking viruses and still be a huge headache to deal with. Here is my what I encountered with Bitdefender which scores much better than Panda. I'm still looking for a better antivirus and using Bitdefender in the meantime.

NOTE THAT THE FOLLOWING IS FOR BITDEFENDER NOT PANDA.

Unfortunately based on it's rating on av-comparatives and av-test I decided to try it on all 7 machines at home (so as to take advantage of the offer). So I have quite a bit of work to do to get it off the machines once I decide on an alternative but I'm thankful it was a free offer I used so at least I'm not out of pocket on top of the pain.

      1. EDIT: THIS ONE TURNED OUT TO BE MY FAULT. I had another product blocking pop3. The rest of my points stand.
My biggest gripe is that Bitdefender blocks pop3 mail downloading from pop-mail.outlook.com using the latest Thunderbird. Changing network settings on the firewall or even turning off the firewall altogether make no difference. I instantly get email download back if I uninstall Bitdefender and reboot, and I instantly lose the ability to download mail (it just hangs) on a reinstall of Bitdefender. I went through quite a bit to determine this as I was trying to turn off the firewall, but turning off the firewall did nothing. I can't believe this product doesn't even honour it's own off switches. Actually blocking my old Hotmail account, which I rarely check is something that I could work around if that was the only issue. The issue is I can't trust this thing isn't interfeering in any network problem I have. I almost contact my ISP over this, thinking it was a network misconfiguration as the host is unreachable. Fortunately I had the sense to do some diagnostics with traceroute, ping and other clients (an old windows XP box, and my android phone) so I didn't embarass myself. I can't emphasize enough that I have never before seen a mainstream product firewall that wouldn't honour it's own off switch.

      2. To install Bitdefender you have to remove "incompabile" software. In my case Spybot Search and Destroy. The thing is once you do install Bitdefender, it will happily let you install Spybot right after. And in practice it doesn't seem to add any new conflicts that I've seen. Nevertheless a reinstall of Bitdefender means uninstalling Spybot… Note that for 1 above I uninstalled both to get pop-mail.outlook.com mail download working, and only reinstalled Bitdefender to get it to stop working again. Bitdefender, on it's own is definitely the issue.

      3. Logging is very brief and log viewer is horrible to use clunky cartoon interface. I've found references to more verbose logging which they've ripped out sometime in the last couple of years. Apparently the log file still exists but can't be gotten to from the interface. But from what I've seen in the forums even that log file is less verbose than it use to be. (I'll have to check it out when I get home tonight).

      4. The interface is all over the place. Very un-intuitive. No quick help available, but you can refer to a PDF manual (that's likely out of date). Requires entry and selection of a file for exclusion rather than being able to use existing detections etc.

      5. Support option built into the interface has you type out your email, a description of the issue etc and then hangs trying to reproduce the issue or some such nonsense. There is no back button. If you cancel out you've lost all those details you typed in.

      6. Haven't had a confirmation email (to main email address which is not blocked) for their community forums. So if I log in, because the address isn't verified, not only can't I post but I haven't got permission to view the forums that a guest that hasn't logged in can see.

      7. Their online linked at http://www.bitdefender.com/support/consumer.html points to http://www.bitdefender.com/support/contact-us.html which rediects back to http://www.bitdefender.com/support/consumer.html after you fill out details of what product you have and what category of support you need. You don't actually get to send an email.

      8. Their online chat doesn't seem to work and redirected me after timing out to send an email. Who knows if there will be any reply.
EDIT: No response received days later.
