They offer free shipping on orders over $45 AU, so this is only really handy if you want a one or a few small things

  • +9

element14 is very expensive retail. Ozbargainers only ever go there because of the local duopoly on the Raspberry Pi.

    • +2

While this is generally true some items can surprise. For example, I go through a few CR1632 button cell batteries for a Polar watch and they are very hard to find locally other than BatteryWorld etc that want $5 each for crappy no name brand that don't last. Element14 sells Panasonics for 52c each. Shipping usually kills it though.

      • -1

Next time try OW, I grab my CR1616 Energixxx for $4.97

        • +1

Yeah I tried OW and they don't stock that size.

        • +1

@dlovep: you will notice my original comment comparing crap Chinese cells to Panasonics. The $2 shop cells I have tried in other devices either leaked or had next to no capacity. CR1632 is also not a common size that I doubt you would find in a $2 shop anyway. Incidentally, I ended up buying 20 of the Panasonics from Element14 bundled with a mates order to get free shipping over $45.

        • @turbodude: Sure, no point to find a useless stuff ….. from a $2 shop.

        • -2

          @turbodude:
For a second i thought you found a niche… but those CR1632 batteries are everywhere on ebay. Every brand and flavour you want. For reference, all those button cells are worth jack sh**. Yes, even your boyfriend Panasonic.

        • -1

          See the original comment…

        • +3

good find but I don't want to use no-name brand stuff in a $150 watch and have it leak (have had it happen in other devices). Also, cheap ones I have tried previously (from BatteryWorld) lasted less than a month rather than the 10months they are supposed to get according to Polar. My guess the Aliexpress ones would be even worse but I could be wrong. I bought 2 from BatteryWorld and got similar run times. I bought 20 of the Panasonics from Element14 three months ago and the first one is still going strong.

        • @turbodude: you're right. they could be good they could be bad.

I bought 50 no-name CR2032s from dx 6 years ago. I've used over half of them in different PC motherboards, kitchen scales, electric gate remotes, etc. seem to be good and long lasting.

I'd try the elcheapos first and if they suck then go for brand. - personal choice

    • Yep - sometimes expensive, specials can be very cheap, Generally the quality is very good, check 'em out and make your own decision.

Now we need coupon for Raspberry PI to make use of this free shipping.

Holding out for a sale to get the model B. Will spend more than $45 on that + accessories anyway.

      • +3

If it's really a B you're after you should put a request in the forums. I'm sure lots of OzBargainers will have them laying around unused in the pi(le) of unloved tech bits (like me, but I'm not selling).

But I suspect you are really after a model 2.

        • +2

Yep, Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. Silly model naming.

The Raspberry Pi 2 Model B is the second generation Raspberry Pi. It replaced the original Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ in February 2015

  • +3

    E14! WHY SO EXPENSIVE?!!

    • +7

Because delivery fee is built into the price of all their products ;)

  • +2

Please don't link to a picture!

  • +4

For this to be considered a 'deal' please give an example of a 'bargain' we can obtain from said site during free shipping period.

Also, do not link to an image, link to the site (ideally a product)!

    • I would say anything someone was wanting to buy but held off because of shipping cost. I for one like to know when they are doing free shipping as I keep a list of items I want but can wait for either free shipping or $45 order. Plus from me OP.

      • I respect that completely, but to ensure all submissions are of good and useful quality to everybody, the content should be relevant to people who weren't holding off shipping on an order at this site.

The deal posting guidelines clearly suggest you should do this always so that people don't have to waste their time looking for something of good value at the site just because 66 other people liked the deal. (I would be in that bucket, but I haven't given it to the time yet.)

    • +2

I agree. I don't bother with Element 14 as they are always much more expensive than nearly every other place to buy my supplies. It's often cheaper for me to pay retail at Jaycar than to order from Element 14, and Jaycar are often twice the price of other places.

I consider Element 14 to be like OfficeWorks, Myer or David Jones. They have their place. They carry everything. But prices are usually RRP, which is often double what other places charge. Occasionally they have a sale which make things worthwhile, but usually I would never use them. If Myer or DJs had a 'Free Shipping' voucher I don't think it would get many positive votes.

I would neg this as there are no 'bargains' listed - saving $10 on shipping but paying $120 more than another supplier for a small bag of parts isn't a deal! But people complained last time I negged somebody for something similar, so it's up to them. Last time E14 had a 10% off with free shipping voucher I wasted two hours looking up parts only to find out everything was two or sometimes THREE times the price of RS components or WES. FAIL!

      • +1

The neg is a very useful tool. Never be afraid of using the neg. Even if it is unpopular to do so. Kids (big and small) that have been brain washed will jump up and down, but who cares? There are many ppl out there that value your input.

Having said that, I am getting a couple of those hard-to-find low dollar items, so this deal is great for me ☺ , but i agree with your comparison!

  • Anyone tried xbmc on the new raspberry pi? Is it worth upgrading for streaming 1channel?

    • XMBC is now called KODI?

Been researching the last couple of days all of the reviewers have been suitable impressed with the improvement over RP 1. So I ordered an Rpi 2 yesterday and will try to get it up and going on the weekend. :)

      • Got an RPi 2 a few days ago, works absolutely flawlessly using OpenElec or OSMC as a small HTPC with media files shared over the network.

    • +3

I'm running Kodi (new name for XBMC) on OpenELEC with my Raspberry Pi 2. It runs so much quicker and smoother than it did on my Raspberry Pi Model B. I fully recommend the upgrade if you are already using a Raspberry Pi 1 for XBMC/Kodi. It is a fairly cheap upgrade if you use your existing cables and accessories (note however that most cases won't fit the new model). You will also require a new OS image as the processor has changed. Good luck :)

      • I've also upgraded from an rpi1 to rpi2. I run Raspbian.

Kodi menus are much smoother and faster. EmulationStation is awesome now. General i/o is definitely faster too.

The rpi2 is an ARM7 where the rpi1 is an ARM6 but the rpi2 is binary compatible so you can run the old kernel and userland on it.

I've very happy I did the upgrade.

        • +1

Raspberry Pi 1 has a single core ARM11 @ 700MHz (uses ARMv6 architecture, not to be confused with an ARM6 which uses ARMv3 architecture) where as the Raspberry Pi 2 has a quad core ARM Cortex-A7 @ 900MHz (ARMv7-A architecture, not to be confused with an ARM7 which also uses the ARMv3 architecture)

They manually remove the shipping before charging your card. It's all setup for commercial orders rather than a nice user-friendly site for the general public… Adding the code to the special instructions is the way they do most of their promos - someone actually reads those special instructions and applies whatever promo it is.

Don't forget everything is +10% GST as well.

      • Thanks for the explanation! I ordered 20 odd small electronics parts and was worried it might cost $30+ instead of $18

Anyway, not much choice there, even Ebay would not do those items cheaper. And much quicker here too.

          My bad
