    • no, gearbest is 11 cents cheaper.

      • FWIW, unless I'm missing something.

        JD: US$89.99 (US$99.99 - US$10)
        GearBest: US$92.89 / AU$121.88

Looks like GearBest is converting using a cash rate of 76.21c which would benefit us if we could check out using AUD. As I can't seem to (PayPal attempts to check out using USD), it looks like JD would be still better?

Using XE's current rate of 73.16c

        JD: AU$123.00
        GearBest: AU$126.97

EDIT: Checked out from GearBest using credit card instead of PayPal and it said it was charging AUD $121.88. Hopefully it honours that and doesn't silently use USD.

        • +1

Tried it before on another item yrs ago. They charged in usd.

        • @ko0l: Bugger! The order email that came through afterward is in USD which makes me believe what you've said will still be the case.

That said, GearBest's free shipping time is 10-25 days whereas JD's is apparently up to 60 days.

        • Please let us know the result when you find out. Thanks! (but bummer :)

      • +1

Not that it matters now but it was US$85 at Gearbest last week too.

  • the problem, and the only problem, and it isnt obvious

is the screen is NOT glass

its going to get scratches or you will need to keep changing films on top.

if only they gave it some basic protection itd be perfect.

    • Is the Chuwi VI8 the same?

      • pretty sure it is, obviously some cost cutting on both and consider theyre so similar priced

        • Hi8 has HD resolution.

    • +1

No HDMI port and slow eMMC drive as well.

Looking at these tablets made me go and buy an Acer W4-820 for $199. Glass screen, HDMI port, decent eMMC performance, and local warranty.

Still, if the price and the higher res screen are worth the compromises I guess this is a decent deal.

      • Vi8 without the full HD screen has a HDMI and that's like $10~20 cheaper.

      • +2

I have the Hi8 (typing on it now) and at $93USD this thing is a steal.

        • Hows the battery life?

        • ANd the screen?

        • +1

Yep, decent tablet for its price
          Loving it

        • @erwinsie: screen is fantastic. have yet to really test battery.

        • @Blugok: Love mine too, the battery life is average but a xiaomi external battery fixes this when traveling.

        • @Zwarzy: im a technology enthusiast, and only just noticed that the screen isnt glass after reading these comments. thats a good enough indication that its a pretty good screen regardless.

battery life is 4 hours. i use mine with a xiaomi power bank and actually scored mine for like $102 AUD. absolute bargain.

not sure why @cainn went and bought a W4 820. if you wanted that res you could have purchased 2 Vi8's with the same specs.

        • @xEnt:

I was fully aware of the existence of the Vi8 when I made my decision. If the pros and cons aren't apparent to you then I guess it really doesn't matter ;)

        • @cainn:

do acer still use their pita proprietary charger plugs or have they changed to a standard usb?

        • @whooah1979:

          Stock standard Micro USB now.

    • why not get one of those glass screen protectors.

I'm guesstimating that any 8" glass screen protector should work.

like this one for AU $2.12 from aliexpress. it's meant to be for a lenovo Note 8". if you're just covering the glass rather than the bezel then why not.

there are more expensive ones. and probably better quality ones.

the thing to remember is that this tablet isn't going to be a family heirloom. you're going to use it for a year or 2 and then something with 5 times the speed and triple the ram (for the same price) will come out and you'll buy it and drop your chuwi like an old used up piece of chewy.

      just putting it out there

      • The Lenovo Note 8 seems to be a 6" screen. Dimensions are 16.9x8.3cm while the Hi8 is 21.1x12.3cm (the protector should probably be sized 20.8x12cm). If anyone has recommendations on compatible devices, I'm all ears.

  • +1

Yeah got one. Battery life is 4 hrs at best

  • No glass screen but come with a screen protector. The cover I bought is official chuwi which is really good quality

  • +1

I wouldn't buy from these people

yep still waiting on my lenovo k3 note from almost 2 months ago.

      • Your order numbr in en.jd.com please?

      • +1

We started selling of lenovo k3 in middle of June, so impossible to wait for it for 2 months.

  • Mine arrived from GearBest this morning. Excitedly opened the box:

After a bit of Googling, I came to the conclusion it was liquid between the digitizer and LCD:
    http://i.imgur.com/idSdnBK.jpg

Slowly been working at it throughout the day, barely noticeable now (but it's unfortunately still faintly there):

Booting up in Android, something kept crashing every few seconds:
    http://i.imgur.com/GLrAzGD.jpg

Thankfully all but the Chuwi app is removable.

(On the screen front, GearBest's OzBargain rep has been responsive. They've offered to compensate me if I take it to a phone repair shop. Otherwise I have a couple of return options.)

    • +1

oddly enough, i didn't experience the liquid issue, but i did get the app crashing first time using it. removed all the chinese apps because i don't read chinese. i find switching OS inside is much faster then cold boot and holding the volume down button. using a stylist helps with accuracy on the screen too.

i did use kingo root, it said it was already rooted? great!

      waiting for android 5.1 now

      • using a stylist helps with accuracy on the screen too.

Interesting. Do they hold your hand steady?

        • i can confirm it does, i'm not using it for drawing, mainly for double tapping in the corners or anything too small my fingers touch elsewhere on the screen

    • Cripes, I'd be emailing them and returning it. If they refuse, I'd do a chargeback!

      • +2

Turns out it's not an uncommon issue. Apparently the digitizer sometimes gets pressed to the LCD and sticks during shipping. There are techniques to pop it back, like shown in the YouTube video scupper links below.

It seems this doesn't cause any damage, so the hassle of organising a return and waiting for a replacement might not necessarily be worth it.

That said, GearBest's OzBargain rep has been quite responsive, so it's not like they're stuffing me around.

    • How do you "work" it? I've got one on mine too.

      • Found this video. But mine worked best by just squeezing the frame of the unit on the sides. A glass screen protector would really be good for this, if I could find one.

        • Yeah, I just applied pressure to the bubble and started to work it towards the side, suddenly the whole thing vanished. Looking closer, there still was a bit of discolouration, so I've been kneading it.

Online I found "fix" videos using autoclaves, heaters and laminators - but given the plastic screen, I wasn't going to test those out.

Just applying a bit of pressure has dramatically improved my screen, in fact, looking now at full brightness right now, I don't think I can see any problem at all anymore.

        • +1

The video I forgot to add is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kFUhyUyz6k

        • @scupper: That's a great video (I hadn't come across it in my search).

  • One of the review said gps on android doesn't work?
Hmm.. If only this has hdmi

    • In the TechTablet teardown video at 1:24, it shows a combined Wi-Fi/GPS antenna, but the device doesn't do GPS.

  • Would lightroom 5 run well on this?

    • I have a lenovo tab with older duel core atom (slower) and it works quite well but if you keep thousands of pix in the catalog expect long startups. I have one of the on order from gb only because gb give you the option of toll (7 day shipping for an extra $6) one of thw main reasons for my purchase is photo management when in the usa next year.

      • Thanks for the info! How did you find editing photos on a small screen?

  • According to this both Lollipop and Win10 have been available for Chuwi Hi8. But I can't find any download links. Has anyone?

    • Think I'd have to agree with the comment on this page regarding Android as I don't have any System Updates option in About.

However as far as Win10, looks like can be done
(actually, need to read through that forum first, looks like people are having trouble activating it now.)

  • My Chuwi Hi8 was just upgraded to Windows 10 last night using the normal system updates. Update went smoothly and Windows 10 runs well. But I just realised now, how do I switch to Android? The switcher has disappeared. Any help? Thank you.

    • +1

The switching program is DualOSSwitcher.exe found in C:/Windows/Program Files/Insyde/InsydeQ2S/

After update, it's still pinned to the taskbar, but Windows 10's tablet defaults hides them.

To restore the old taskbar functionality, press and hold an empty spot on the taskbar until you see the highlighted rectangle, then release to show the right-click menu. Select 'Show app icons'.

Alternatively (or additionally), you can leave the taskbar icons hidden, and instead pin the OS Switcher to the Start page by file browsing to the Insyde directory, press and hold on the DualOSSwitcher file until the highlight rectangle appears, and in the right-click menu select 'Pin to Start'.

      • Another excellent tips @Thrift. Thank you very much.
