  • Not sure if these are good prices or not. But they all have slow (5400rpm) hard drives. I've been using notebooks for 15 years and I'd never buy a notebook today with a drive that slow.

    • Not even if you wanted to save power and have less vibration/noise ?

      • Each to their own. I'm just offering my perspective based on my 20 years of IT experience. The hard-disk is the weakest link in terms of computer performance. If you look at the three main components in any computer, processor(cpu), memory and hard drive, there have been fantastic increases in performance of processors and memory but limited improvement in hard drive performance. I don't like to wait while my computer chugs away on the hard drive and in my experience the difference in performance between 5400rpm and 7200rpm is significant. Maybe for others this isn't such a big deal.

        • It depends on the specific drives you're comparing, since not all 7200rpm drives outperform 5400rpm drives. In most cases (looking at drives on the market today), a 500GB 5400rpm drive will be faster than a 320GB 7200rpm drive, since on the 500GB drive the bits are closer (more dense) and the head has to travel less distance to read them.

Not to discount the benefits of a fast drive — I use a 160GB Intel X25-M SSD together with a 7200rpm 500GB Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 in my laptop. :)

  • Im sure someone else has already posted this sale

  • This offering was posted a few hours ago & has already been deleted once.

I negged it because not only is it not an especially good deal at best, but moreover it is shamelessly touted by Lenovo as the "Deal of the Decade".

  • Just got this via email. It'll give you 39% discount.

    • I really don't like the Lenovo website - it's so badly designed. It's just so much more difficult to use than other sites, for example dell. When I followed your link it goes to a page with a bid add saying "deals of the decade" and "shop now". Click on that add and it takes you to a page talking about Windows 7 with no mention of any notebooks, desktops or special prices. Go figure.

Lenovo, if you want to develop a decent website then give me a buzz.

  • When are we going to start seeing special prices on 17" notebooks?
